Can I cash American Express travellers cheques at a casino such as the Aria? I hate travelling with tons of cash. I am bringing a set amount of money but wanted to have them as a back up.

The following answer is NOT an answer to your question. Feel free to ignore it. It is being shared with others that are considering TC or front money or line of credit that may follow this thread.

TC are old school. I personally think they are a pain.. I take a few thousand in cash with me. No big deal. I can get $1,000 a day for $6 from the ATM with no hassle. I actually have three cards that each give me $1k a day.

I try and take travellers cheques all the time if I can. Lots of places have stopped issuing them so you may have to order them if you're in the UK. I'm presuming you are because of your spelling of cheques. Never had a problem in cashing a few thousand dollars at the cashier cage and no atm fees. They are secure as well as long as you keep a note of the numbers and the emergency number to ring should they get lost or stolen. I think it is easier to deal with the loss of those than a credit or debit card from overseas. You will need photo ID and they can be used as cash in most places too. I've never had a problem using them or cashing them apart from sometimes (over a set amount) they have to make a phone call to get a verification code to put on the cheques. Presumably to ensure they haven't been reported as lost or stolen. Very safe way to carry money.

agree... unless you can get them in $500 denomination, they aren't worth your time signing them.

like the poster above said... cash is just as easy.... 5k is only 50 hondos

I always take along travelers checks on my trips, esp to vegas. I get them for free at my credit union and basically it's my "just in case" money. I usually take out markers in vegas but I'm always afraid of my line of credit being put on hold while they run another credit check so I usually bring along travelers checks with me. I usually take a few thousand in either $500 or $100 denominations.

My dad got mugged downtown over 15 years ago (he was staying at the Lady Luck). He lost thousands (dad said over 5k but I think it might be a lot more), his wallet and rolex that he probably bought for over 20k. After that I always try to limit the amount of cash I carry with me at all times since I don't want to lose a lot of money if I ever get mugged.

I have no problems cashing them at the casino cages. yes, make sure you have some ID so you can cash the checks but I never encountered any problem or situations that prevented me from cashing them at the casinos.

While some people do not mind carrying thousands and tens of thousands on them I do not feel safe anywhere carrying that amount of cash so I usually just carry travelers checks instead. different strokes.

I would think that the casino that you're staying at would be more than happy to cash them for you. And, like the other people said, they're just about like cash. But, just don't take them to a check cashing place, they might charge you to cash them.

Perhaps the best post ever concerning traveling to Vegas (and subsequent $$$ questions) for mid and low-rollers.
