Chips stolen at Craps table

i was playing craps at Aria 2 days ago. I played a 10 dollar two way bet on the numbers up top (all small, all big, and all the numbers). Well, 10 minutes later, I rolled an 11, knocking off the last number I needed for all the numbers. All told it paid me, and the dealers, over $1,000. I stuck most of the chips in my pocket and continued to play for a little bit.

A while later, I was down a couple hundred from my high point. I took the high denomination chips out of my pocket and put them in the chip tray since I was gonna have the boxman break it down. 5 minutes after this, my high denomination chips are missing out of the chip tray. I told the boxman, and he and the stickman looked on the floor, nothing there, nothing in my pockets. He picked up the phone and called up security to help out. About 5 minutes later, a plain clothes security guys pulls the lady next to me away from the table a couple feet, and tells her that stealing that much in chips is a felony and that she needs to give it back or she'll be arrested. She vehemently denies it, and he tells me that they are taking her downstairs to talk to her and to sit tight.

At this point I'm sitting at the closest blackjack table (not playing), another security person asks me to follow him downstairs. He tells me that the reviewed the footage, and they were able to see, clear as day, her reaching over into my tray while I was throwing the dice and stealing $850 in chips (I asked to see the footage but they said they could not since they were not allowed to show the public the intricate details of their security room or measures...whatever). He said the police were coming, and maybe an hour or so later, they came, I gave my statement, and security showed the cop the footage. The cop told me she was going to jail, and she was going to be taken to a hospital to be strip searched as well since they weren't allowed to do that. I gave him my number, he gave me a case number and told me he'd call the next day, and that was that.

It's two days later and I haven't heard back yet. I called the number he gave me and left a message today, but I still haven't heard back. I asked the plain clothes security person if Aria was going to give me $850 in chips that were stolen, but he said something to the effect that they were my property, in my possession, so it was my responsibility to take care of then. I agree to this to a degree, but not completely. If I had realized 1 hour later that my chips were taken, and the chick had already left the hotel, then I'd be more "OK" with this. But I mean I immediately noticed my chips were gone, I did the right thing by notifying the boxman, and security even said they caught her on tape taking my chips.

Am I S.O.L? I'm not sure what to expect at this point.....I feel like security and the thousands of camera's are not only supposed to protect the casino, but the players as well. This sucks.

It happens so often they have a name for that particular thief, there called a "Rail Bird",
(usually an attractive female, as a dude all up in your business would be un welcome, and told to GTFO!)
too bad it happened & why you must Hawk on your stack.

Try to keep "supposedly Innocent onlookers away" as many times as you have found out,
they ceranly are not Innocent & interested in your Stack of chips,
n0t the rolls/action .

 

The casino and security did their part by catching the person who stole from you and turning it over to the police. It's now in the police's hands to take care of the situation.

Just keep calling the number you were given until you get ahold of the detective or get a call back from them. There may be a decent chance the woman passed them off to someone else and the police don't have the chips or they could be sitting in an evidence locker right now. I'm not saying that you are SOL, but you have to be patient with the process. I'm not even sure, but you may have a case to sue the woman if she's found guilty and the chips are never recovered.

 

Funny thing is, she was NOT attractive, maybe 3 chip tray rails over as well. Security said she didn't have a record either. Which could just mean that she hadn't been caught before.

What I don't get is why she didn't make an excuse to get away, or just flat out leave, when I told the boss I was missing chips I know I didn't bet.

 

Good luck getting this resolved. Aria has probably washed its hands clean by getting the police involved.

Last trip I made to Tunica, a machine theft happened for about $390. Some guy told the bartender that he needed to take his drunk wife up to the room, but he stupidly did not cash out. Bartender or I didn't notice the thief. When he returned I suggested they call security. Fortunately for him, his thief was also stupid and failed to cash the ticket yet. They were able to void the ticket and handpay him.

sorry about your $850...hopefully it's just a waiting game and not a lawsuit type thing

That sucks Breck. Hopefully the situation winds up resolved more favorably for you.

I'm a low-roller, but its because of this scenario that I always put the higher denomination chips (usually just green for me) in the middle of the row or if I'm playing blackjack, on the bottom of the stack. Not foolproof but would hopefully mitigate the losses from a thief.

 

Thank goodness most crooks are stupid. She should have left the casino immediately. Here's hoping you recover your money.

 

I agree with this as if you observe the casino's arrangement of chips it is identical. Same as hail2skins, I keep the biggies in the middle and a bunch of whites on each end.
On the other issue, it would seem 850 $ to Aria is a minimal investment in good will. They have her on tape as being the culprit. It is just a matter of recovering the chips. Not sure there is a form for such incidents as yours but it would seem you could sign a piece of legal rig-a-maro that released any recovery of goods to the casino / hotel. Just this one post has seemingly done more public relations damage than 850 $.

No.
The cameras were installed to protect the casino.
Aria would not have the time to invest, in recovering $850 for you.

Hey Breck sorry to hear about this but don't give up hope just yet. Many years ago a family friend who was a PO took a trip out to MGM. This was back when they had slots pay coins out vs slots using tickets to payout and while he was playing slots he heard a women yell in the next row over. Turns out it was an older women who hit a few good payouts and had 2 cup full of $$ tokens and some guy took one of the buckets and ran. As luck would have it the guy ran into a security officer and knocked him to the ground. My friend jump in to help out and MGM asked him to fill out paper work so the police could press charges. It seemed like MGM had seen him do this alot but could not catch him. Sorry rambling on here, long atory short when MGM realized he was PO they offered to put him up so he could help press charges when the time came. Sure enough he was back in Vegas as a witness

So hopefully they find the chips on her and are returned to you even if mailed in the near future. Hope they press charges

 

That's bs that aria didn't offer up replacement chips after they clearly saw them taken by the lady

 

I'm surprised Aria would not refund you the $850. I primarily play blackjack and I will often leave my chips on the table when I go to use the restroom on the assumption that the casino will look after my chips while I'm gone. I've never had any chips stolen, but I may color up and take my chips with me in the future after hearing this story.

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident, it will serve as a cautionary tale for the rest of us. Hope you get your chips back (be sure to wash them, lol), and please let us know what happens.

 

LOL. Do that and soon you'll have friends palming chips everywhere in the casino.

I'm not surprised at Aria's response. If the chips aren't accounted for and they pay you out they are essentially out of pocket.

But this certainly sucks. I'd be calling around the police until I got a firm answer. Makes you wonder what happens if a tourist has to go home before the matter is settled.

Pretty sure I had a green chip lifted from me once but I'm not 100%. I was just thinking I had miscounted my stack but I'm pretty sure it was lifted. This was at Monte Carlo.

 

Whenever someone takes a bathroom break and leaves a large stack of chips on the rail it blows my mind. Also makes me a little uncomfortable. If I really want to save my spot I load my chips into my pocket and leave about three whites on the rail and tell the dealer. At video poker I block the ticket out with my beer bottle and put an extra napkin over the cash out button, and that's if I'm with someone. Otherwise, ticket out. My brother lost a bar top VP ticket to a thief while he was away from the machine and the casino made it right, but it took a day to do it.
