Can anyone describe how much light really comes through those wooden shades they have at the Cal (and MSS and Fremont)? I am a very light sleeper but do need some sleep to function :peace:

Does light pour through those wooden shades? If so I may need to just relegate myself to somewhere with better shades.

Also - anyone who has been at the Cal lately, how is the floor construction? Is it distracting?

Those "shutters" don't create a dark room. Even the street lights leak through. However in any hotel there is always some source of light that is distracting. This can be anything from the smoke detector to the alarm clock or the pilot light on the TV. Even hotels that have "light blocking" curtains seem to leak light at the edges. I did a quite bit of travel for work. On very long fights the airlines included sleep masks in the amenity kits. I saved a few of them and I always pack one when I travel. I use them whenever I travel. Along with the white noise generator app on my tablet, I sleep like a baby wherever I go. Sleep masks are available all over the internet for less than 10 bucks. At that price you can sample 2 or 3 to find the one that works for you.

The cracks of light from darkening shades, or smoke detector are never a problem but full on light blowing through shutters might be too much. I just didn't know if people's experiences were that they are not too bad and work fine. I'm sure I'll be toasty enough to pass out each night but the morning is my killer!

Those shutters are my biggest gripe about MSS. It's pretty darn bright in the morning. As suggested, try the sleep masks.

It also depends on what time you get up in the morning and the time of year. Late Fall and Winter there is less daylight. We usually are in our room between 10pm - midnight. Then for some crazy reason, we are out and about by 6 or 7am.

As far as the construction at Cal, we were there at the beginning of October at it was a little bit of a pain because they changed areas that they were working on during our stay. The Main St. entrance was closed the whole time we were there. The had completed an area near the check in the day we arrived. When we left, they had started working on the area by the Main Street bar extending out onto the floor all the way to the players club. But again, that was the beginning of October. Almost 2 months have past since then. Updates anyone?

I walk through the Cal at least once a week. This past week only the space in front of keno was curtained off. As far as I know they have been painting behind the curtains, so there's not much noise.

Stayed at MSS and it wasn't bad. But I do get up early.
My suggestion is to grab the all the bath towels and hang them in the top slot to act as light diffusers so you can sleep in.

I usually stay in the west tower, facing west so I never worry about the morning sun shining in. While the shutters do not completely block out all the light (not pitch dark in your room during the daytime) the room is relatively dark enough but you can probably make out shapes in the room.

As for the construction on the casino floor, basically they are "modernizing" the casino. Changing the ceiling tiles to make it look more classy. I also noticed that they changed the carpets (with the same carpet design). I heard that they were supposed to get it all done before the holidays but not sure if that will be the case.

I stayed at the Cal 11/20-23 when we arrived Friday late afternoon they were doing something in the middle of the floor, just above the stairs to the crap pit. The next time we walked by they were gone and the area was open. Monday morning they had the area roped off again and were working on the ceiling.not a big deal at all. As far as the slats, my wife has mini blinds with small curtains across the top in our bedroom and it's lighter then the Cal room was. I would prefer blackout curtains but I guess it wasn't my decision to make.

Fwiw, MSS "slats" are worthless for blocking light..
I sleep pretty hard, and when I'm at MSS, I can't ever sleep past 8am.

A simple solution is to buy a sleep mask. Since I started doing this I don't even shut drapes or shutters. One bonus to this is that when I wake in the morning, I pull the mask off to sunlight, which I like in the morning.

    Good Luck!

That article makes it sound like they are just starting. I think they started back in the spring or mid winter on the casino floor.

Was there for the VP tournament last week and 3 nights over the weekend.

The Valet and parking entrance is CLOSED and fenced off First St between Ogden and Stewart is blocked off at Ogden and the entrance has been moved to the fire exit on First. You basically park your car anywhere on the street and either give it valet or leave it there with the keys inside to check in. If you want to use the parking garage you have to either go around the building or pull a u-turn and use the entrance on Stewart Ave When you enter you are next to the keno lounge and the area blocked off covers the restrooms the 2 of the 3 elevators to the tower rooms and one of the two parking garage elevators. When I was there they were jack hammering and I could hear it through the elevator shafts on the 10th floor.

One last note On Tuesday morning (today) I was given a wake up call of the sound of falling metal over and over again. It turns out I was one of the last folks on the floor as they were installing new beds in the rooms and metal sounds were un-assembled bed frames. The hallway looked like a major party had happend with beds, plastic and frames all down the hallway and all the room doors propped open with mattresses.

Rats, I hope they get it all done by the end of the year. I would hate to be there for the CES and can't sleep because of all the noise. Guess I will be playing more at MSS in January.

I don't recall if the shower heads in the Cal are as low as they are at Main St. If they are they need to raise them!!
