I am going to Vegas for the first time next year but unfortunately it is March Madness week, March 14~18.

I found hotel rate for this week is very expensive, the Mandalay Bay normally charges $100 per night is $350 per night , even more expensive than Wynn or Bellagio &Venetian. But all of them are more expensive this week , what is weird is that the Saturday(march19) is the peak of MM but the hotel rate is cheaper in the weekend.

    So my questions is

    1. I'm check in by March 14 and out on 18, is it going to really this expensive? $200 for a standard 4~5 star hotel room?

Is it more difficult for me to request a better room or view in this week?

    2. How many people are coming to Vegas for MM? The large convention attracts around 140,000.

Is it going to be very crowded and long line to wait for the week of march madness? Or it's just the bars and sport book?

    Thanks for the help

One of the reason I come to Vegas is its lowest rate of 5 star hotel room in the country, but March Madness.....not so cheap anymore.

Yes, it will be that expensive. The first four days of MM attracts the second largest crowd to vegas all year (behind NYE). Actually, if you are willing to pay for a nicer suite/view, you should be able to get that. MM attracts a huge crowd but its not as much big money like SB weekend. But trying tog et a free upgrade, good luck. As for lines, the sportsbook line can get bad, especially right after games when people try to cash in. But its not as bad as SB weekend, because the games are spread out over four days. Lines for restaurants and bars can get very busy depending on where you go. The higher end the place, the shorter the line.

My experiences at Aria last year I think are revealing: the HL room was no busier than any other weekend. The main casino floor was packed. The line to get a slice of pizza at 550 was half an hour long, but we walked right up to Tetsu and Bardot for dinner with no wait. That's pretty much been my experience very year there (except for 2009 when the overall crowd was a lot smaller)

    Hope that helps

I would 1) avoid those days by all means; 2) try a hotel without casino

^^^^ what UK Fanatic said ^^^^

We have gone to Las Vegas every year since 2001 for opening weekend of MM and room prices are always high. We will arrive on Tuesday (March 15, 2016) and depart on Monday (March 21, 2016).

If you don't care about the NCAA men's basketball tournament you may want to reschedule your trip for another week.

I love the conference tournaments weekend. Just as much (actually more) basketball, but no crowd.

And this year some people will be enjoying green beer on the first day of MM games - woo hoo! I wonder if our cocktail waitress will drop some green food coloring in the Patron Silver

While Monte Carlo isn't nearly as nice as the places you mention Nick666, I booked it through Mlife for a great rate - staying March 16th through 19th. The non-offer booking came out to around 150 a night, much less than other properties (and only a little more than Luxor or Excali). It's worth a look, and you obviously get the location benefits compared to Mandalay.

Haha! Since you drink Guinness, have you checked out RiRa? They know how to celebrate St Patty's Day!

Yup, hotels are always expensive during march madness. Even downtown. Unfortunately I have a bowling tournament that week (why would they schedule a tournament knowing that is the week of MM) so I have to also look for a place to stay. Ha Ha, kayak searches say that the longhorn has some reasonable rates (under $100) but I'm not sure if I want to stay there or stay so far away from all the action on the strip or downtown. I may just stay at the mardi gras hotel on paradise road for a few bucks more. and the air fares are also high for that period, in the $700's for a flight from Honolulu to vegas. I just hope that they drop prices for air and hotel soon or it will end up an expensive tournament.
