We will be traveling to Vegas in mid April and I noticed that all of the hotel rates were REALLY high, even for Sunday thru Tuesday. After doing a little research I founderstand that the national associationof broadcasters convention and expo will be there that week 100,000 people for 1 convention. We are committed to this week, as we are meeting friends from different places in U.S. does anyone have any experience being in vegas during the NAB show? Will room rates stay high? Do you think flights will start to get cheaper 90 days out like they usually do?

Also, only our second time in vegas, we are considering Paris, Planet Hollywood, and LinQ? Which do you prefer?

Have you logged into your total rewards account? You may be able to get free or discounted rooms if you have a history there.

I have logged in. Only our second time in Vegas, and we only have 13 points. I think with thirteen points you get a free slice of pizza in southern Indiana[emoji13]

Points don't always equal discounted rooms with CET. If you have a card with them, look at the calendar even if you don't have any offers. You may have some decent rates show up. If you do and stay with them you will have to play to keep the rates low but it's worth a look.
We got free rooms a couple times and can't even really call ourselves low rollers. I booked around those dates so may not have been during a convention. Good luck!

NAB is probably the 2nd biggest convention besides CES.

I see a couple of options:

    1. Book now and then hope that the room blocks come off. I went to the NAB Show site ( nabshow.com ) and it looks like their deadline is March 18. If that's correct and the blocks come off the following week, rates might return to normal.

    2. It looks like you might be able to book at the convention rate by going through that website, they use a 3rd party called EXPOVISION. There was an option to book as a non-member without registering for the conference. I looked at all the forms and went partway through the booking process, and I didn't see anything that said you had to be a member or even attending the conference. It would be like booking with any other third party. it might be a little hassle if you needed to cancel, but it appeared that they don't charge you the first night deposit until 2 - 4 weeks before the date, and that the individual hotels' cancellation windows applied.

I would think that for a single room, this process would be totally automated, so nobody's going to call you and ask if you're going to the conference.

Chuck, thanks. I had already seen that. In fact, I found a link on their twitter account and got a code to register for a free exhibit only badge. The confirmation email even included an invitation to book a hotel through that portal. Definitely think that is the route we will take. Just wondering which hotel you prefer? I am leaning towards P.H., it is mid-range price wise and centrally located on the Strip? The wife is intrigued by the link (me, not so much) and Paris is on the radar?

I wish[emoji14] . That would be much more interesting and tasty than Broadcasters

I've attended 5 NAB shows, well 6 if you count the one year they held it in Dallas. Anyway, I wouldn't expect room rates to change much. Expect big crowds on the Strip and the restaurants, especially the high end places. The majority of the Strip hotels are part of the bus shuttle system to and from the convention center. The casinos get very busy at night but mostly just normal during the day.

If you are not committed to the Strip the downtown pricing remains fairly standard with the exception of the Nugget. They are the one hotel that does have a convention bus stop and they do jack up their rates.

Just an aside. The Broadcasters are notoriously cheap and really don't gamble that much, but they do take up space on the low limit tables and the casino floors in general, so expect elbow to elbow most nights.

Thanks Joe! Will that be the case all week (Monday and Tuesday) or do most arrive mid week? I am guessing I should pick a show and purchase tickets early too?

Hotel rates will not go down. Airfare will not go down.

Any hotels booked direct with the hotel almost always can be cancelled and rebooked elsewhere, or at any lower rates if available. Booking with third party.. maybe, but probably not.

Avoid any hotels that are labeled as "host hotels".

When you log in, ignore your points. Ignore your offers. Plug in your dates and see what is offered.

    BOOK SOON.

You have to check the rate calendar for your rates. At the very least you should get a discounted room.

Thanks, just did & they do offer 20% which is still $100 more than the expo's booking portal. Think the group has settled on P.H. . I will get that booked tomorrow.

Thanks for all the shared experience.

I went and looked at their schedule and see the entire timing has changed. The convention used to start on Monday with boring engineering papers and presentations on Mon & Tues and then the crowd starting arriving on Wednesday when the exhibits opened. Now I see they are starting on Sat and the exhibits open on Monday. So honestly, I guess I no longer have a clue. Happily retired for almost 9 years now and haven't given NAB much thought until you posted.

Just one more thing you can try with the calendar. There is a place to put in your companions TR number. That will sometimes lower the rate as well.
