I tip according to the quality of service, and according to the expected % of the bill. I have no idea as to how much they make.

My rule is: Tip as much as you feel comfortable tipping, whenever you feel inclined. Forget the rest.

I don't need a check stub, 5 years of tax returns and a budget from a person before I give them $1. ;)

Quality of service is what I base my tips around.

These are the people that I tip:

    1. Waiters & waitresses. My baseline is 15%. If they are pleasant and efficient they get 20%. Same goes with bartenders. If the waiter, waitress or bartender are rude or provide lousy service they get 10% or less. I frequent the same restaurants while at home and all my regulars usually get 20-25% from me.

Same goes for housekeeping at hotels, but on a lesser scale. Usually it's $5-$10 a day.

Cab drivers will usually get $5-$10 from me as well. My regular cab drivers here at home get about the same.

    CWs get $1 per drink.

Dealers tip amounts vary based on their pleasantness and service. I've left some monster tips after some big wins and I've stiffed some dealers after big wins, it's up to them if I tip them. I'll usually throw out a red chip after a losing session unless they were nasty.

    2. My postman, who saves me numerous trips to the post office to pick up registered mail (meds from the VA, I don't drive), gets a very generous tip/bonus at the end of the year.

    3. Charter fishing crews always get a nice tip from me when I'm out in the Gulf.

    4. My Doctor, Attorney and CPA don't get tips but I will occasionally get them a gift, usually around the holidays, to let them know I appreciate their great work.

Generally I tip for great service and don't mind doing so. I've found that giving a little back, even to those who are not in the "service industry" is a nice way on my part to show gratitude.

However, just because someone is in the "service industry" does not guarantee a tip from me. In the end they determine themselves what amount of gratuity I will leave.

Generally though, regardless of what my perceived notion of the person's income is, if I receive good and considerate service I'll recompense them in some way to let them know they are appreciated.

Without question, quality of the service. If the part of the service that's in their control is, i.e. attitude, attentiveness is lousy, then a much smaller tip. Great attitude, great service, great tip.

I always make a point of tipping the bus staff, the bathroom attendants and the housekeeping staff because chances are they are seldom acknowledged for making my "experience" that much more pleasant. I realize that the bus staff is given a small portion of the gratuities, but one of my first jobs was as a busboy and I worked with some cheap-ass wait staff that thought it was alright to stiff me or low-ball the percentage even though the busboys were doing the majority of the work.

Generally when I hang out with ppl that have worked in the service industry, I often see the opposite.

As for me, I'm fairly consistent, rarely stiffing or tipping poorly, but I will give more for great service.

Yeah I have been trying to tip the bathroom attendants more often in Vegas. That money seems truly appreciated nearly every time. Probably should give the "drink/ashtray collectors" more love too.

For me it would be: both

For the most part I tip based on quality of service, and to me it is two sided: if I get really good service I have no problem tipping extra, but if service is pretty bad then I have no problem stiffing them either - I'll never tip a minimum "because I have to"

For the "how much they make" part: if the service is good I will try to tip at a place like a fast food restaurant or a place where it might not be considered normal to tip. To me this hearkens back to when I was first self employed and starting out and my wife was working for a Subway and while she didn't get much in tips, when she did get them she greatly appreciated it and her bringing home just an extra $10-15 per week was actually pretty huge for us and really helped.

How much they make doesn't make sense to me? How do you know? Most people you tip I would assume make min. wage.?
I usually tip 20% for waiters. $1 per drink CW.
The tipping that bothers me is when you get a hand pay. What service have they provided? You can't find them when you need them. I understand some peoples mindset. You just won a jackpot, but how much do people lose on slots for every jackpot won? They provide no service. Please don't reply that they give me my money.

It was best explained to me as tip the person if you want them to keep doing their job. My excellent hair stylist gets excellent tips, average waiters get average tips, casino hand pay persons often get no tip because I would rather have ticket in ticket out. Plus my last thousand dollar hand pay counted it out in hundreds. Really?

I dont care what they make. I tip for the service.

I think people tip slot attendants for two main reasons:

    Windfall
When you have a windfall win the money tends to feel less real, or maybe "less earned" is a better way to put it, and because of that people are more willing to spend/give it away. Its the same thing that hits most lottery winners and why so many of them plow through their winnings so fast.
The other thing with windfall wins is: they make people happy and some people want others to be happy and/or happy for them.

    Obligation
I think the most common reason is just that some people feel obliged to tip the attendant because "thats what everybody else does" and at the same time they don't want these people to look down on them or with ill will.
And the feeling of obligation usually trumps common sense, like what did they do or what service are they providing, such as when somebody gets long hauled from the airport and they were expecting to pay $20 including tip for a ride to their hotel and then the cab ride costs $19.50... they feel cheated because they were long hauled but at the same time they are fishing in to their pocket for another five dollar bill because they feel obligated to tip the cabbie.

When I tip it's based on quality of service. I won't give 20% on a bad experience just because it may a low wage job and I resent pressure from servers to do that. And is it me or is it primarily restaurant staff that expects a full tip no matter how poor the service. I don't tip folks where my understanding is that their basic wage is not tip dependent, meaning I skip tip jars at fast food counters and the like. Screw tip jars!

That term "service worker" is key for me. Sure, some of them make quite a bit - but many don't. For me, tips are a way to compensate for that.

I tip based on service and what's generally expected, i.e. Cocktail waitress for bringing me a drink, cab driver, etc. If they do better then expected they get more. I've never not tipped a cocktail waitress or a server at a sit down resteraunt, but then again I've never had suck rude/awful service that warranted it. I usually tip 20-25%, but I have tipped less before but often that's when servers are more concerned with their friends/ co workers then my table.

The one area I think is weird is the QSR/Starbucks tipping. I don't drink Starbucks drinks or any other coffee/espresso drinks for that matter so don't know what they do or don't do for you. I just don't get why people tip at Chipotle but not In and Out. Don't they do the same? They both also make more then minimum wage, it's $11.50 in Bay Area, so I don't get it.

I'd like to know how some employees get the best tipping jobs....Did the slot attendent that gets tips on handpays work her /his way up from where? And the Valet guys..did they work thier way up from somewhere?...That is always in the back of my mind when tipping (Besides Food Service ,that is $$ just for a buffet server that will come back for coffee refills)
Back in the day the restrooms used to have a spead out of colognes and all that stuff and an attendant handing you towels and there used to be a tip tray for the guy...
Nowadays, you're walking on same bathroom floor the poor guy just mopped before it had a chance to dry....That guy needs to be tipped and Housekeeping also....
