I am a (60ish) male poker player traveling solo to Vegas on Thanksgiving weekend (Wednesday-Sunday) and looking for a clean, inexpensive place to stay. I prefer to be on the Strip or a VERY short walk away. A casino is not a requirement.

I will be playing poker at mostly "Strip" casinos and am not interested in shuttle rides even if they are free.

I have considered staying Downtown but not sure I want to deal with that bus ride daily. For those of you that usually stay downton ...your comments on the Strip commute?

I will only be using the room to sleep, shower, and change clothes - so I don't need amenities or views.

Clean, Safe and Cheap is what I am looking for.

    Your suggestions please ...

Well if your in your sixties, think u should think about staying downtown, there are plenty of casinos all in a short walking distance, food & rooms are cheaper
& the limits are lower on BJ & craps, the strip is for younger people & high rollers but it's up too you!

How cheap is cheap? I mean, is there are some pretty scary by the hour hotels on the North Strip.

Ellis Island has the Super 8 attached and that's just a long block from the Strip.

On strip, you can usually find lower prices at Casino Royale, Tropicana, Circus Circus, Excalibur, etc.

Garlock - I am not opposed to walking at all ... in fact I love to walk (In Vegas 5-7 miles a day in not uncommon for me) I just want my room to be close to the Strip. As to your comment about the Strip is for younger people and high rollers ... REALLY !!!

Yeah, I'm almost 50 and far, far, far from a High Roller and stay exclusively on the Strip. I can tell you there are plenty of people our age having a grand ole time there.

I play poker only when my wife and I visit and I enjoyed Harrah's a bit. Centrally located on the strip with access to Planet Hollywood's poker room which was very loose and the other way to Ventiitian's poker room.

Garlock.....first I'd disagree with you that the strip is for younger people & high rollers. There are all kinds on the strip!

Plus, as a poker player myself, I'd be willing to bet that acepro4 would love to prey on those younger people/high rollers at the poker tables.....I've found the games to be softer on the strip (other than the 'big' rooms) so I think I know the type of trip ace is looking for. Sorry ace....I don't know about any of the cheap rooms to recommend but I'd say to try Casino Royale for mid strip or down at the other end Tropicana, etc.

Good luck on your 'fishin' trip!

I did a kayak search for Nov 25 - 29. There is a Fortune suites that goes for under $200 for the 4 night stay (not sure if that price includes any resort fees but it list $40 a night not including taxes or fees). they are located on flamingo close to the Tuscany.

Travelodge located next to circus circus lists at $224 not including taxes for fees. Silver Sevens is located on Paradise and flamingo and lists as $272 for the 4 night stay. There is days inn on Tropicana for a similar amount. There is a mardi gras inn on paradise road that is around those price ranges.

Other than the hostels (which I wouldn't recommend) those are probably the least expensive places to stay near the strip so it depends on what kind of nightly rate you are looking for.

If you want a true "strip" hotel, The STRAT and Circus Circus are listed about $100 more than the above hotels but you probably have to add on higher resort fees. The Excalibur is in the $450 price range and Monte Carlo and Luxor in the $470 range, again probably not including resort fees so add on another $100 for them.

I have booked rooms through booking.com and hotels.com web sites with no problem. I like booking.com because many hotels do not require an upfront payment (except for maybe the first night). Hotels.com usually requires you to pay for your stay when you make the reservation.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you consider the Fortune Suites or the Travelodge if you are looking for a clean room. In addition, the BW Mardi Gras is not walkable to the Strip.

Many older people stay on the strip also, but they usually can afford the higher strip hotel prices. Many of the older people looking for inexpensive places usually stay downtown or off strip since strip hotel prices can be a lot more.

I am well over 50 and love the strip and prefer it to downtown.

If you are playing on the strip, then stay on the strip.

Lower price places like Harrahs, Flamingo, Linq, Excla, Lux should have something.

Just looked for you. Harrahs rates are 59,59,132,84,36
    They always vary per night.

I would go along with the Ellis Island before any of those mentioned above. It is close enough to walk to strip. close to Ballys and center strip. $9.95 resort fee also includes breakfast at EI.

Please give us your review of the fortune and Travelodge. I am interested because tripadvisor reviews say that fortune isn't that bad, plus their web site shows the hotel to be decent. I understand what you get with a Travelodge, esp one near a "kiddie" hotel like circus circus. I was checking on places to stay for the electronics show so was wondering how the Fortune was.

I agree with the mardi gras not walkable (probably a good half hour to 45 minute walk to the strip) but they are close to the convention center and near bus routes to get to the strip.

    Thanks!

Actually Ellis Island is only a block or two away from the Fortune and Tuscany. I didn't see it as on Kayak it is listed as super 8 las vegas strip area but the price does seem comparable to Fortune.

Bally's is nice and clean and safe. The off strip shuttles from Gold Coast are better than the bus from downtown.

I forgot about Gold Coast and their shuttle. That's a good option.

Fortune was actually featured on the television program Hotel Impossible. That episode gave me the creeps just watching it. Yuck!

I used to work for a travel company in Las Vegas. I can't tell you how many angry people called us to demand their money back after booking the Travelodge. We finally just had to quit selling it.

Suit yourself if you don't believe me. Don't say you weren't warned.

That statement got a big 'ole eyeroll from me. I'm 54, have been traveling to Vegas multiple times a year since age 21 and stay exclusively on the strip. I always stay comped but am not a high roller. I can out-drink the "youngins" all while wearing heels and walking in them while I observe many of the younger ladies stumbling, shoes in hand and they'll clearly be passed out by midnight.

    Consider yourself corrected garlock.

Amen. These crazy and-Moses-came-forth utterances that get tossed out here are just laughable at times. "Tend" is irrelevant, and mostly because there really is no science backing up peoples' personal-values-based suggestions as to that is "correct" or "right."

    Hotwire is showing:

    4-star South Strip for $67
    4-star Center Strip for $57
    4-star North Strip for $70

Add taxes and resort fees for each night (maybe $35?) and you are out the door for $92-$105 per night.

If it were me, I'd go to Priceline and bid $10 less than those prices for 4-star on the part of the Strip you want to be on. If nobody accepts the bid, then I'd book the Hotwire room.
