Bit of an open question, but:

What is the appeal of slots?

As far as I can make out you sit there and press a button, hoping for something to come up that makes the machine make noise (cos I have no idea what combinations win you anything).

I briefly played the Michael Jackson slot in the cosmopolitan, which plays his music, and the Deal or No Deal one looked good when I watched guys getting to pick the cases, but in general, what is the appeal and where is the fun, or even skill?!

I know loads of VMB forum users love slots, and obviously millions of people do or else Vegas wouldn't have them, but I just don't get it.

(Don't see this as a grumpy post, I am genuinely trying to see the appeal so maybe I am better informed for my next visit!)

First off, there is no skill involved - that's in the rules :) If it was a game of skill, they wouldn't be allowed to put it in the casino!

Second, the mindlessness and music are the appeal to some who enjoy playing. Sit back, drink away, and keep pounding the button, playing the game, etc.

Even for some gamblers who don't primarily play the slots, it may be a nice break to sit down and soak in the world of Michael Jackson or Deal No Deal or Zombies for a bit :)

By skill, I meant that at least in video poker you decide which cards to hold and in blackjack you can hit or stand. even in roulette you can pick your numbers.

Is this a rhetorical question? Slots are fun. You push the button and you don't know what will happen. Could be nothing. Could be a lot of money.

What's the fun of anything? I love golf. Lots of people don't get it.

I think that's exactly the appeal. There's no way to make a "wrong" decision on a slot machine, you just press the button and hope for the best. Also, there's the potential for bigger payouts on a slot machine; you're never getting a handpay on blackjack, after all. It's not for me (plus I always get my ass handed to me by slot machines on the rare occasions I try), but I definitely get it.

You cant explain fun, why do people like to gamble, drink, sports, dancing, working out, fine dining, etc, etc? To each his own, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The chance at a high payout relative to your bet is often a motivating factor. You can hit 100, 200, 300 times your bet. Most table table games don't have many of those bets. There are some table prop bets that get close but not many. Plus there is no "wrong" decision to make like at blackjack. Do I double down on Soft 17 vs dealer 4? Do I split 4's?

The potential big payback is it, 100%, as you have a chance to get a big win with relatively little investment. In order to win big at blackjack, craps, or most table game, you really have to be willing to lay a lot of money out there while the cards/dice happen to be going your way.

It's one of the reasons I like 3-Card poker. I realize that to odds are worse than something like Blackjack, but the multiples on certain hands make the wins more exciting than grinding out hands of BJ.

Sometimes thinking is something I just don't have the energy for....

seriously though I do not think I can possibly convince you it is fun....

I like that at times $20 can last me 30 mins or longer min betting (40 credits or so) on a penny machine. Try doing that on a craps table. VP, BJ and Craps often feel like a grind to me, slots never do.

As others have said. No thought needed, chance of big wins for small individual wagers. Constant action! 600 spins/hr is easily accomplished. People can get sucked into the lights and sounds of a well-designed machine. If I totally ignored math, or found some of gaffed penny slot that paid ~100% back, I would play slots a lot more. They are a nice mind numbing break to me.

For many folks, the lack of skill required is part of the appeal. If I am 5-6 drinks in, I don't always want to have to think and make decisions and interact with anyone. And as others said, you can conceivably (although not likely) bet your first $1-2, and win tens or even hundreds of thousands. Even if it's just $100, that's a pretty good return.

Slots are about 20% of our play; for us they have their time and place.

For me, it's the only game in which you can go from "zero to hero" in 6 seconds.

Anyone who's hit a big jackpot can tell you about the rush.

However, that being said, you have to be "prepared" to lose.

I play slots and craps and sometimes craps can be boring. Case in point, today I was playing at a table where few points were being made and we had a couple of shooters who take 30 seconds playing with the dice between each throw, and they still 7 out. One plus to slots is that there are 1000s to chose from in a casino but only a few different tables.

I play slots because they show pretty pictures and make unusual sounds..........remember "i Dream of Jeanie"? You could rub her belly and she would giggle. That's about the closest thing to porno you'll ever get.

Personally, whilst I enjoy 3 Card, Craps, Roulette, I really enjoy slots. I've pulled back an entire weeks losses in one pull for a HL slot. Also, I've found that table players can be so damn grumpy , it can be hard to find both a dealer and table you click with that makes the experience fun.

Time for a break, chat with other 'like minded' people, chance to let your mind wander and just people watch whilst chugging back a few cold ones......also, whichever casino you wander into they are obvious, all the same, take no checking (pay tables, denomination on tables, 3/2 or 6/5 return, etc) just put your money in, hit a button and relax! One week to go after a 4 year sabbatical, can't wait!!!

I don't have the attention span to play BJ, which is the only table game that interests me. Once you get used to a new game every few seconds, even VP is too slow.

    Different strokes for different folks.
Some get bored at BJ. Some get bored at Slots.

Thrill of BIG win for a few bucks on slots. Thrill of slow but steady wins on BJ.

    Intimidated on table games.

    Not liking other players.
    Love other players.

    Just different. Thats all.

You have a LOT better chance of being approached by a hooker while playing slots then at the tables.
