:wink2:Casinos in downtown Las Vegas, where gaming was hit hard by the recession and other economic pressures, have begun to improve their fortunes.

Downtown gaming revenue increased in each of the past two fiscal years, rising 3.1 percent in fiscal year 2015 and 0.83 percent in fiscal year 2014. That marks the only instance over the past decade that the area’s gaming revenue has grown in two consecutive fiscal years.

How long before the strip finally figures out that they may want to rethink their crappy odds philosophy? I know I left the strip for downtown two years ago and won't go back...

I would have to agree. Downtown just feels better than the strip

So you read Downtown gaming revenue increased in each of the past two fiscal years, rising 3.1 percent in fiscal year 2015 and 0.83 percent in fiscal year 2014. That marks the only instance over the past decade that the area’s gaming revenue has grown in two consecutive fiscal years and are having a "AH HA!" moment that game odds are obviously drawing people from The Strip to Downtown...?

I think you missed the second sentence completely, the "That marks the only instance over the past decade that the area’s gaming revenue has grown in two consecutive fiscal years" - by comparison The Strip has had four consecutive years of gaming revenue growth twice in the last decade.

They made only $511 million in gaming revenue. That's less then they made in 1992 by $200 million. That $511 million number is also less then 10% of MGMs casino revenue. I wouldn't be holding a parade w those numbers.

Downtown room rates fell last year according to that article. Maybe last year, but it sure seems like they've gone up this year. Comped nights have gone down (we're gambling more and getting fewer decent offers), and what we are paying when we have to pay is usually quite a bit more than in years past. With those wonderful resort fees it often averages well over $100 a night if a weekend night is involved.

For slots players, downtown isn't all that much better than the strip. The way many newer games are designed would make them seem tight to us even if they were set to the most generous percentage. I end up off strip because the casinos have so many slots that they can't avoid keeping older games that don't take money so fast on the floor. But even there, many newer games are still Hoovers. The advantage downtown has over the strip is primarily table and VP but slots not so much.

Correct. Gaming revenue on the strip is growing more slowly than non gaming revenue. Gaming revenue downtown has completely collapsed, they just generate almost no revenue from rooms/food/bev.

I seldom go up to the Strip anymore and enjoy the feel of the Downtown. Strip reminds me of "lemmings marching over the cliff", especially on week-ends. But to be fair, I would think an important part of the revenue increase over the last 2 years was a result of adding 600+ beds at the Downtown Grand. The casino itself may not be booming, but the people staying there are going out and spending money. I guess the revenue could go the other way if The Grand closes down for any significant period of time. I sincerely hope not.
