Why Does Everyone Talk About "Shopping" in Vegas?

    I'm just wondering...

I've been reading another Las Vegas forum, and everyone is talking about budgeting money for shopping for clothes.

    Why?

I usually budget my clothes money and vacation money completely separately. If anything, I like to go shopping for clothes BEFORE I head on vacation, whether I'm going to Vegas or elsewhere. Then, I know I have the cute clothes that I want to wear on vacay, and I can figure out how to pack it all BEFORE we leave vs. buying another suitcase or something?

The last thing I want to worry about on my vacation is trying on clothes for hours or spending hundreds of bucks on clothes. I've been shopping in Vegas, and even though I live in a rather suburban area of North Carolina, I haven't seen many impressive clothes shopping stores that aren't within (very) easy driving distance to my house. Plus, we all have online shopping nowadays?

    Am I weird?

    - - - Updated - - -

By the way, I totally understand souvenir shopping and stuff like that...I just don't understand going to Vegas to go full-on clothes shopping!

For us Brits the prices are amazing. I think the fact that all the high end shops are all easily accessible and the outlet malls are cheap. Everything is there, whatever price scale or whatever you need and all within a short distance of each other. Makes shopping at any level very easy for sure and a lot of choice. I've shopped in NY, London, Dubai and Vegas is best by far although if I were only in Vegas for a few days I'm not sure I would spend it shopping apart from a quick trip to the outlet mall to buy up the whole of the place for the Grandkids, lol. Designer things for the kids there are similar prices to our supermarket clothing shops. A great deal for us. I got school shoes for a 5 year old from the factory Skechers on E Flamingo for $10, here at our outlet mall half price for the exact same shoes were $30. I always come home after a two week trip with another bag full of shopping. 95% of it from the outlet mall and the rest usually from Macy's who are cheaper than the outlets sometimes. My Michael Kors bag was cheaper at Macy's than the outlet. As Brits, and anyone not a US citizen, there is a card at the customer services to get 10% off at Macy's.

I suppose it does make sense for Brits, then, huh? Thanks for sharing. :)

Some folks like to gamble.... Vegas is probably the best place on the planet to do so.

Some folks like to eat.... Vegas is one of the best places on the planet to do so.

Some folks like shows.... Vegas is one of the best places on the planet to see shows.

Some folks like to shop.... Vegas is one of the best places on the planet to shop.

    Some folks like to....

Form germans it makes also sense due to the prices.
AND I'm on vacation. The only time in the year I've got time for shopping.

in the wayback before the WWW and WWW shopping unless one was from a major city of 2,000,000+ well Vegas had shopping that was well beyond what was available to people outside of those major cities

in the past when Vegas was still a great deal across the board those shopping options could take advantage of the fact that they had a large amount of sales dollar per sqft and they could offer prices that were in line with or even lower than what people could find if they went to the closest major city in their area

Vegas still has a number of higher end shops that in total are beyond what even a number of major cities offer, but these days the deals are probably going to be worse than what is available online or what is available if one goes to the closest major city to them that has a retailer for whatever particular product they are looking for

but even with the prices being almost certainly higher than is available online and probably higher than at a non-Vegas retailer of a product it is hard to lose the reputation of being a great place to shop especially when there are those (including myself) that still prefer to shop in a store Vs online especially for clothing

and the overall selection especially at the higher end is still well above most major cities in the USA

An argument can be made that Vegas tops even NYC, Chicago, LA, Tokyo, Paris, Dubai etc for high end shopping in particular. Between the Forum Shops, Crystals at City Center, Grand Canal Shops, Via Bellagio etc. you have Gucci, Prada, Versace, Armani, Fendi etc. at multiple locations with vast assortments in very close proximity. If you're a luxury shopper, it really doesn't get better than Vegas. If you happen to be a Wal Mart shopper, there's Henderson:thumbsup:

The other advantage to Brits clothes shopping is that for those of us "not shy around the buffet" is that there is more choice in larger sizes. (Plus an American XL often fits me whereas a UK 2XL, 3XL is more likely to be the best fit).

Keeps the wife busy while I go degenerate. I can drop Mag off, gamble for two hours, and meet her at a designated spot. Among other places, she is fond of the Miracle Mile (formerly Desert Passage) at Planet Hollywood (formerly Aladdin).

The same would hold true for most Europeans for the same reasons. But the only time I do any shopping is on the rare occasions when I have forgotten to pack something I need.

A lot depends on where you are from and your tastes. If you like high end things its rare to see so much on display as you see in Vegas. Watches for example, your local watch shop may have three high end insert brand name (here) in the case. You can walk into a number of shops in LV and likely see and touch what you are looking for. I also like to find somethings to do other than gamble, its the whole ying and yang thing.

I can be a shopaholic and yes, Las Vegas gives you a good variety. It's not the bargain it once was. There's been a definite upscaling over the past so many years, with lotsa places having tons of those "how can anybody afford this $#!+" shops.

I used to LOVE the old Belz mall, but it seems like the prices are up a bit there, ditto for the outlet mall near downtown.

I'm a woman, and I hate shopping on vacation...unless it's fun souvenirs and stuff. I love shopping any other time. Vacation is like a break for me. :)

I like to visit and look in the various shopping outlets but rarely buy a lot of things. I just want to know what is out there. I guess I shop but don't spend. Save all my dollars to lose in the casino.

I've never "shopped" for anything ever in Las Vegas - except for gambling conditions & hotel room quality.
However, I do have friends who use Vegas shopping as a way to 'lock in' wins... get up a few hundred? Go buy something. Up again later? Go buy something else.
Back in the 80s, I had one Vegas friend who won over $2000 during the trip, but only came home with about $200 of that because he spent the rest of it in the Forum Shops.
On the plane flying home, he complained about only having won $200, & I quickly chimed in, "...but hey - you've got a $300 jacket with the Caesar's logo on it!" :poke:

+2. I don't want to schelp a ton more stuff home than I brought. I will look for trinkets but other than that, I will pass. And personally I think Vegas is overhyped as a shopping destination. Having mutliple Louis Vuiton stores doesn't impress me all that much. I know its easier for me to say being so close to Chicago but nothing I've seen there replicates the thrill of the Mag Mile.

I have started buying one luxury item each time out there. I always look at the Hermes (no store close to home) tie selection and have bought a few. I also bought an LV (store close to home) money clip the last time I was out there. The luxury stores just add to the whole Fantasy mystique of Vegas in my opinion. Part of the fun is thinking about how you would spend some of your big win if you hit it.

I'm a woman and I generally hate shopping but enjoy it when on vacation (I am probably less 'normal' than you are!) :)

Often, I don't actually buy a lot but I do like to look and as others have said, whilst the bargains may not be what they once were, the value is still there when comparing with the UK.

The only two times I've shopped in Vegas (I'm around a 100 times) was one of my trips last year. Bought a Fossil purse. The cab fare back and forth to the south outlet prob negated any savings on sale. The other time was forced. I still laugh at myself. Leaving for Vegas in the morning early like 5am. Son had been away to a cabin on the island for the weekend. Had same blue luggage that I had. When he got home late at night, he plopped his luggage at the front door. Guess which luggage I picked up and put in my car in the morning. When I got to the airport I noticed the luggage was lighter than normal. Looked inside. Dirty campfire t shirts that reeked campfire, jeans, Nikes, underwear....It was too late to go back home to get my REAL luggage sitting in my bedroom with my prescription glasses inside..I had my prescription sunglasses on. I had to explain all weekend to dealers that I'm really not trying to look cool, I left my real glasses at home...these are the only thing I can see the end of the table at. I used to play poker..I suck at poker. Too slow for me but I needed to get permission to use my sunglasses for distance. Anyways, made the best of it. I had my passport. Had my money. And I was in Vegas. Hit Fashion show mall. Bought a few pair of panties, some makeup, two t shirts, a bathing suit, a skirt..just basics...hotel gave me a care pack of toothpaste etc. What an idiot...Can't remember if I won any money that trip..Back to shopping. Those are the only two times I've shopped in Vegas.
