    Good morning,
Going to be in Vegas in October, and am looking at booking the D, or Golden Gate. Have never stayed downtown, always on the strip. Thought I would try something new. I need suggestions on which is better. ...in my 30's traveling solo.

    Thanks

Have not stayed at either one, but I like the Golden Nugget.

Have not stayed at the Golden Gate, but have stayed several times at the D.

It really depends on what you want on a room. The rooms at the D are a comfortable place to lay your head, but not the type of room that I'd want to spend much "awake" time in.

For that, I would prefer the Downtown Grand, which is a block away from the D. The Downtown Grand is a "smaller" casino, but the pool area is nicer.

For food, it's a toss up. I haven't eaten at any other restaurant besides S+O at DTG, and have eaten at all three dining places at the D. the D has it from top to bottom. IMHO, Andiamo's is a wonder steak house, and Coney Island Dogs is great for a midnight snack. The D Grille is a good middle of the road restaurant.

At Golden Gate, there's only DuPars, which is a great breakfast restaurant, but a little lacking for lunch and dinner.

There are pictures of the rooms over at VegasTripping.com

Most of the rooms at the GG are very small and old. However, the new suites are very nice. For a standard room, I would definitely go with the D.

Are there safes in the rooms of either of these hotels? (Standard room)

Ditto what Dick said. The D has very nice standard rooms. It's in a great location with lots of eating options in house and nearby.

Both the D and GG have safes in the room.

Make sure to go play at GG, last trip we discovered it and had a blast. Cool atmosphere, friendly staff and a cool party vibe. We made it home base last trip for drinking and gambling.

Ive stayed at all three rooms the d has to offer, both the standard and corner king are fairly basic but clean rooms. The corner king has a bit more room and a mini fridge, the full suite is nice with a mini bar and larger fridge and nicely done bathroom. The D comes off as more of a party scene over the GG. Both places have good places to eat, dupars at the GG, and andiamo at D. If I had to vote for you, I would say go to the D, but GG has done good for me to. Plus they are both on the same block, so its walkable even when drinking.

If you're looking @ standard rooms then the D is your best bet. If you want a suite, compare prices. both are nice. I like GG suites because you can be out of your room and on the casino floor in about 2 minutes. The standard rooms at GG are very small and I don't recommend them. both locations are my 'go to' places to play and stay (as seen in countdown timer) ;)

    Actually, they're three blocks apart.

If you're willing to pay a few extra bucks, take the suite at GG... something like $85 mid-week... otherwise, pay your $25 less for a room at 'theD'... the standard rooms at GG, while quite comfortable (re: their beds), are very, very small...clean, but very old...
I've stayed at 'theD', in GG regular rooms and in one of their suites.
I will always choose a GG suite out of those 3 options.

There's a safe in both of them.

And, like everyone else, I'd take The D over GG standard rooms. I had to almost go in the bathroom sideways at GG because the toilet it right beside the door. The D's just feel newer.

I vote for the GG suite. Nice and quiet at the back of the casino for sleeping and only a couple of minutes away from the action. The bathrooms are a little strange though.

Yeah, I think because GG is such a old hotel, they didn't really care about layout. I mean, who puts the toilet right behind the door so you can't open it even half way?

The suites aren't like that... the one I stayed in, the bathroom/vanity "area" is where a small kitchen would be in a 1-bedroom apartment. There is a curtain of sorts that one could close as to not disturb a sleeping partner... then a frost-glass door to the stand-up shower (very roomy) and a solid door to the toilet area...also roomy. The vanity area is simply a sink, mirror, illuminated make-up mirror, blow-dryer, and lots of counter space.

Yeah, I've only been in the regular room. Figured I'd try it out at least one time. Yeah, I'll stick with The D. But, might try for their suite next time.

That last one is the vanity area... you can see the curtain to the right...the stand-up shower and toilet room are to the right of that "hall"
