Let me start by saying...yes, I know do what is best for me and ignore strangers advice. This is more of a just talking to myself out loud post.

2 days ago I receive a call from my doctor who tells me I have to see a specialist and to "Not do any exercise...yard work, workouts, lifting...until I see a specialist". He told me to be lazy and live a sedentary life for now....This also includes long walks. As you can see by my countdown timer I have a trip in less than 2 weeks. Specialist appt isn't until the end of September.

If this trip was with my husband or Mil ( Rip ) that wouldn't have been an issue...I could park my ass at a slot and keep the running around to a minimum. This trip however is to bring a newbie...hence show her around...aka walk our asses off. She has given me the green light to cancel if I want...I change my mind every day right now. I'm not going to make a decision until the middle of next week.

I know if I have "issues" I could always rent a scooter ( watch out I know I will run over peoples feet! ) or if the airport is too much I could flag a TSA agent for a wheel chair.

Just wondering given the same criteria what others might do. I'm already thinking cabs instead of walking and monorails. I know once I get out there I will still do more than I would at home. Best case scenario is we just go slow and things work out okay. Worst case is I drop dead or end up in a LV hospital.

If your doctor is not pushing to get your appointment moved up with the specialist. EG most docs have pull with referrals, then I would not say its life threatening but something you need to monitor.
Without any detail to your age or condition, I could not ask offer any reasoned advise how I would proceed if it was me.

But I will give you my two cents on hypotheticals. If your condition is at all life threatening and can be aggravated by a Vegas vacation, then yeah I myself would hold off. Its not like they are shutting down the place.
If its just a condition that has to be monitored and managed, then I would probably go but make sis aware. I think Vegas is pretty accessible for people who aren't embarrassed by using physical assistance devices.

Just avoid any situations that put you at risk, try to stay out of the heat, standing for long periods, etc. I have a mild blood pressure / heart health problem that I manage well. Since having a history of family members who have passed earlier
than expected due to heart health, cancer, etc (50's and early 60's). I try to live my life as if my expiration date is sooner than the national average. Life is too short to not take advantage of each moment. That's my two cents.

That's a rough one. Like Funk said, it is hard to give advice without knowing the intimate details. Think of this though...The newbie will be on her own if you get laid up/hospitalized. That is not someplace I would want to be, in charge of my sick traveling partner in a strange place.

57 overweight smoker. Been having breathing issues for a few months. Thought it was COPD. Had a stress spect test ( stress test with medicine not treadmill )...showed "possible small arterial heart blockage". That is pretty much what I left out of the original post.

Go. haha. You sound like me. I have same issues, with a severely narrowed aorta. Took over a year of tests to finally diagnose it, so if I had waited to travel, I would have missed many trips. Claudication makes walking very difficult sometimes. Many stents have not helped any, and the next procedure is to actually replace the aorta with a plastic one. Just take it easy and I bet you will be fine.

Sounds like you might need a little roto rooter (catherization/stent) in an artery and until then you're at very high risk for a, God-forbid, heart attack. While there is medical care in Vegas, you don't want to have to use it. The prudent thing is to listen to your doctor, cancel this trip, get your cardiac issues resolved and then go back to Vegas.

On one hand, you do not want to be laid up in another city. On the other hand, with no appt until Sept, they apparently do not think it is critical and may even be nothing. Vegas itself should not be an issue. But, there is LOTS of walking out there. No way around it.

Not knowing how much is "overweight".... could be an additional issue.

Side note - TSA does not do wheelchairs or anything like that. They do have folks that can help of course.

    So essentially, your options:

    1. Go to Vegas, alter how you Vegas, nothing happens, you've had your 17th trip to Vegas albeit in a toned-down way.
    2. Go to Vegas, something happens, you spend your 17th trip to Vegas in a hospital or, heaven forbid, it is your ultimate -- as in last, final, never again, not best or greatest -- trip to Vegas.
    3. Stay home, get your treatment, your 17th trip to Vegas is now on the horizon and you'll be more functional than ever when it comes around.

Bottom line -- beyond the fact as you acknowledged that only you truly know what you should do -- it's still only Vegas, you know what's there, it ain't going away, and there's only one of you.

If I was having Ischemia or Angina symptoms, then I myself would definitely not go, and push to get my referral moved up. Assuming your doc probably has you on blood thinner for blood pressure. Not to lecture, but you really should trade the smoking habit for another vice. That stuff will just magnify your heart issue. I have had a couple of friends get some nasty side effects who kept smoking. I kicked the habit 20 years ago, except for the very very occasional cigar. Life is way better.

Just a nurse here -- but possible coronary artery disease -- get it fixed first. Your friend will understand -- and if not then she is not really a friend. The last place i would want to be with chest pain and in an ER is away from family and friends. -- Unless you can push the referral to the specialist up before your trip. You have a positive stress test already - I wouldn't chance it. Like Ken said - Las Vegas will still be there.

I agree... and I have no medical background whatsoever. The whole travel thing in and of itself is somewhat "stressful" and that's before you even set foot in a casino and you full know the kind of walking, etc. it takes to experience Vegas... even if trying to do a "limited" trip. Better "safe than sorry" and that's not my general MO, but in a case like this and knowing it's still gonna be well in the 90's in Vegas then, I just wouldn't chance it.

It's vegas!! You and the person you going with grab a scooter and start exploring! At the airport if you tell them you need assistance they will help. You even get to load the plane first when you need assistance . Just my two cents. Wish you the best.

I love Las Vegas, but Las Vegas will always be there.

I would cancel and not reschedule until after you see the specialist.

You should just ask your doctor. Tell them that you have a vacation to Las Vegas booked and need to know if you should cancel it or not. You can also review possible options with them, such as if you were to stay at one property and not tour The Strip or if you rented an electric scooter while you were there.

When my wife was going through her cancer treatments we checked with her doctor about a Vegas vacation and he gave us the full rundown on what we can expect from her health, what we should avoid doing, etc.

I agree. We have cancelled a Vegas trip due to health concerns. My significant other has Afib and suffered a stroke. "Only" a TIA (mini-stroke) and he's fine but we decided that our trip was too close (3 weeks away) and postponed it for another 8 weeks. I think we enjoyed it more just because we were more at ease with the situation. If you wait until after the specialist's findings then you can relax and not have to think about anything but enjoying yourself. Just my opinion......

Thanks all. I have changed my mind at least 3 times just today. I have a feeling deep down that I will end up cancelling it. Maybe late Oct. I have until next May to use my SW credit...only beating I will take is my Jersey boys tickets I already bought. Sometimes it helps you to decide to do the right thing...just by running it by others.

You know I didn't go from 2007 to 2011 due to health issues and the resulting financial constrictions. It happens sometimes. There's times you can go when medical stuff is going on and other times you can't. We went after my husband was diagnosed with lymphoma (he's OK) and before he started treatment. But, he was fine otherwise. Then we went when he was done his treatment. Take care of yourself and get back when you can.

I agree with Lola. I've cancelled a few trips for health reasons and it SUCKED to do, but ultimately it was the right decision. You need to take care of you first!

Auggie is right. The best person to advise you is your doctor. Have you presented the issues to your doctor like you've done in your post? If you have and he's advised you not to go, there's your answer. If you have not, call your doctor and ask for his advice.

I need all the luck I can get!
