Thinking about staying downtown for a couple nights Friday-Saturday before we do our customary Sunday-Friday on the strip in a couple months.

I've never really paid much attention to the downtown properties when we've gone there, but what property would you recommend?

Only requirement is a nice selection of slots for the wife, craps for me, and a decent sportsbook (or sportsbar) to watch the Ohio State game Saturday afternoon/morning.

Ideally, if there was a place that would give us some credit for our Gold status with Grazie (and maybe an accompanying offer - at least for a room) would be great, but not a deal breaker. As we've gotten older and less prone to party (and more prone to drink and gamble), we've enjoyed our day trips to downtown more and more.

    Any feedback appreciated.

The only 2 decent sports books downtown are the Golden Nugget and the Plaza. The book at the Nugget is kind of small and can get very crowded so you may have a tough time getting a seat. The Plaza has 10X odds on craps while the Nugget has 3-4-5X. I don't play machines, but my guess is there are plenty at both places. Just up from the Plaza is the Main Street Station which always has 20X odds. Plus, they brew their own microbrews which you can get at the tables.

The craps minimum will be lower at the Plaza, usually only $5. Main Street is always $5. GN can go up to $10-$15 on a weekend pretty quickly

I think the Fremont has a decent book as well. Slot selection at Fremont is pretty decent as well. $3 craps and 2xs odds but I do not know the odds on higher limit tables sorry.

As for getting a matching offer, maybe hit up Curt the plaza host on this board? I thought plaza had a matching thing a while back, and I know others that worked with him have been happy. Look in any plaza specific thread to get his information.

Given your criteria, the Plaza is what you want.

Thanks for the responses guys. After looking into it a bit more, we've decided to go off-strip and non-downtown before going to the strip on Sunday. We'll spend Friday and Saturday at M, understand they have a pretty nice book (despite being Cantor), and plenty of gaming space for the wife while I'm at the book.

We'll make our obligatory trip downtown one day/evening to play at the properties and enjoy "old" Vegas, but I guess staying downtown is put off yet again. :)

Most DT properties are middle of the road. Golden Nugget is the nicest for sure. You will find slots & craps at ALL casinos (tho when we were at Plaza on a Monday afternoon the craps table was dead) downtown & all easy to walk to.
We had bad experience at Fitzgeralds (before reno to D) & 4 Queens. Fitz smelled like sour milk & 4 Queens was a 1960s motel room that overlooked the sound stage--you couldn't even watch TV it was so loud, much less sleep. Both were free & I assume after reno the D is better & having a 4 Queens room NOT overlooking the sound stage would be tolerable.
Most rooms DT are small, many have done small redos.

I've tried The D and stayed at the Nugget last year - I wouldn't stay any place other than the Nugget downtown. The rooms are quiet and the casino is the only one that's kept up like a Strip property. It's not the cheapest, but if you prefer the atmosphere of Downtown, try GN.
