I don't think I will be getting a fall vacation to Vegas this year:( However I am craving a little fix:) I may have a chance to get out solo for perhaps two nights in Oct. Its a long way to go from here for one or two nights but, I may do it. It's not the gambling I am craving, it is LV - I can go to multiple places around here to donate a few $. Its not the clubbing - I'm beyond that. I would be happy simply soaking up the rays, partaking in a few libations, sitting at a table/machine for few hours, see a band perhaps at night, play a round or two, a nice dinner, people watch from a patio and come home. How would I feel after? Satisfied? tired? Like I should have booked a couple more days and begin craving LV immediately all over again? recharged for the winter?

No casino is sending out the gulfstream for me so it is commercial all the way (4.5 hrs/3 zones). Of course if anyone here is jumping on the gulfstream, let me know and I will hide in a suitcase.

    experiences?

In my younger Days I used to take the Friday night direct from BOS -->LAS, right after work, and then the Red Eye Sunday night, direct then right to work. I did this in the spring and fall. I slept by the pool during the day, and ran around at night. it certainly cured the itch. ;) My biggest advice is this. DRINK LOTS of water, and keep the booze to a minimum. that was the key in the short time frame that helped my bounce back into it when I got home.

We're on the east coast too (GA), the least we have done is 3 nights. Took a Wed morning flight to Vegas and came home Saturday morning, it cured the itch. We are going back in Sept but it will be Wed to Sun since Monday will be Labor Day. I just have to have a day off before I return to work. In our younger days we would fly out on a Sunday and come home Wed, then I would work Thurs-Sun 10 hours to get my 40 hours, then resume a regular schedule on Monday.

I prefer 7-8 nights, but when I get the itch I will take less.

I did a Tuesday morning - Thursday red-eye in March (YYZ-LAS). It was totally worth it and I pretty much did exactly what you're planning on.

I have gone for one day, ONCE. Work was psycho so I couldn't take off but I wanted to be in Vegas to celebrate my brother's 50th birthday. We were all staying at Palace Station. I got a 9 pm flight to Vegas (and got sick on the plane -- dehydration -- and almost fainted) and got to Vegas a few minutes after midnight. I got the red eye back on SATURDAY night. Yes, I was in Vegas about 22 hours. Glad I did it to celebrate with my brother but that will be the first and last time I do a one day trip! Too hard on the body. If I were flying first class it might be different but I wasn't.

Last year I flew out on a Friday night and left to return to NYC on a late Sunday afternoon for the Great Gift Wrap Up. I didn't like it. Totally not worth the expense of going for the GGWU and it just wasn't as much fun as I felt so rushed.

My ideal Vegas vacation is 9 to 10 days, basically a full week with a weekend on the front and back end.

I am too old for super fast trips unless it is for something super special. It's not the same thing but if I feel like playing and have just a weekend I go to AC.

I am glad, however, that I made the trip for my brother's birthday.

Our usual trip had been 7 or 8 nights twice a year. We took a last minute trip this past spring due to an offer from Bellagio for two nights. It was our first stay there and the wife really wanted to give it a try. So we booked a Friday to Sunday trip. It was a totally different mindset for us and it worked out great. We figured on starting the cocktails flowing as soon as we hit the airport in Michigan and not stopping until Sunday. And that's pretty much the way it worked out. The key for me was to stick on eastern time. We got up early and probably crashed a little early too. But we had a late morning flight back on Sunday and really had no trouble going back to work on Monday. I know a lot of you guys hit it hard like that on the longer trips. don't think I could pull that off for 8 nights. Need to get in game shape I guess. We managed to have a couple good meals, tons of cocktails, played a bunch of VP, hit several casinos and of course, managed plenty of people watching. We enjoyed the people watching from the rail overlooking the Strip at Serendipity, by the way

I found that I really really enjoy the short trips. Fortunately, there are some decent deals out of Flint MI on Southwest. I've been back out there for 3 more shorter trips since. And now we have an 8 night stay coming up. Can't wait! I highly recommend the short trips though. Just don't let yourself adjust to that time zone. Enjoy!

Many years ago, I went for 26 hours (from landing at LAS until takeoff the next day) from Virginia - and I'm out in the sticks where the nearest direct flight is a 2 hour drive. My buddy was driving down to see me from Indianapolis. He called me right before he left and told me that I better have something fun planned for his birthday the next day. As soon as we hung up, I thought, "Vegas!" (what else, right?) and called him right back to tell him to bring as much cash as he could but didn't tell him what we'd be doing.

I spent the rest of the day trying to find reasonable flights and seeing where I could get a free room. By the time he arrived in town I had the trip planned and we left the next morning. We had an absolute blast - I still get props for giving him his best birthday party.

Of course, I was in my twenties and was off work that week. So I was able to handle the quick turn around and complete lack of sleep without much issue. Don't think I'd want to try the same thing today.

Drove from Milwaukee to Chicago-O'Hare at about 5:30 PM on Jan 31
    Left Chicago around 9:30 PM
Arrived in Las Vegas at 11:30 PM

Left Las Vegas at 12:15 AM on February 2
Due to flight being cancelled due to a blizzard in Chicago, arrived in Washington DC at 7:45 AM
Arrived in Chicago at 9:30 AM
Back home in Milwaukee by Noon.

Total 25 hours in Las Vegas, total 42 out of my house.

But it was one hell of a Super Bowl!

My buddy and I did MLK weekend this past January from DC (I live in VA).

Left work early on Friday, 2 hr drive to DC then a 5ish hr flight to Vegas. Flew back on Monday (federal holiday, so no work), got home Monday night around 8.

Didn't get enough sleep/drank too much, ended up getting sick for about 10 days after. Enjoyed the heck outta Vegas, did not enjoy the immediate aftermath at home.

My advice would be to stick to your sleep schedule from home as reasonably as possible, and stay hydrated.

Broncofn, And we did have cake! LOL (or at least a cupcake with candle in it for big brother's birthday). I have a very special big brother so I was ready to roll as soon as he said that's where he wanted to celebrate his birthday.

OP, I would definitely go ahead and do the trip. I am sure you will have a great time and then you can also compare and contrast it with longer trips to see what you like best.

I will also say going to Vegas for a celebratory trip -- like what the carve did or my flying in for my brother or you with a loved one -- can totally be fun and make it worth the effort. The trip I made for GGWU was a solo trip and I was feeling on the flight out TO Vegas that it was a mistake to do the round trip for GGWU and no other "fun stuff" planned, not seeing anyone while I was there, etc. The flight was mostly covered with a Diamond Aspirations airfare that I was likely to lose if I didn't use it and that was a major factor in my deciding to go.

Go and have a great time!

I prefer 2 nights 3 days. I'm useless by 3rd night anyway because stuck on east coast time I'm usually asleep by 8 Vegas on that 3rd night after going hard for the 2 previous

My last few trips have been very short 2-3 day ones. Know thyself. If you know what you like and what you want out of Vegas, it can be done. The hardest short trip I did was in the dead of winter - knowing I had to come back to snow was awful!

There are some VERY sick low fares from Boston right now - my fellow work degen came to my desk and showed me - Sunday Sept 13th, the 777 Jetblue direct flight is $144!!! Wish I could snag it but I just went to Vegas. Still, very tempting...:wink2:
