What are your thoughts on Downtown Grand

So we have our annual 1st week of Football Boys trip coming up.
We doing 2 days downtown followed by 3 days at the Mirage. We usually stay at the GN when we are downtown and MGM when we are on the strip, but this trip is about doing something new and different.

I'm not a big pool person but my buddies really want to stay somewhere with a decent pool while we are downtown(even though we are only there for a day and a half) so the options really are GN or Downtown grand.
I'm leaning more towards GN since I can get the room comped where the 2 nights at Grand is gonna be close to $300.
I know the simple answer would be to split up and just stay at GN by myself since it is all of a 4 minute walk but I was told this is not an option as apparently I am like a 3 year old that needs to be watched over since I disappear in the middle of the night and go gambling....lol

So I need some convincing on Downtown grand. Can anyone convince me that the pool, rooms, restaurants, atmosphere, bars are worth the $300. Best case scenario I can get the rooms comped on the back end but I'm really don't want to count on that as it is such a short trip downtown. I did try calling earlier to see if they would match offers but I was flat out told no-- does anyone by chance have a contact at downtown grand that may say otherwise?

 

The Downtown Grand is the nicest casino downtown. It's much newer and cleaner than the Nugget, which is starting to show some wear and tear. The pool area, for those who are into that kind of thing, is awesome. It's not a party atmosphere, but it's very relaxing.

The service at the DTG is top notch. As friendly of a casino as I've ever played in, and I appreciate that. Give them even a little play, and they'll be sending you comped room offers in the future. The casino is never crowded, which to me is a good thing.

Yep. DTG is a great place. Clean and classy. For downtown.

 

...comparing pools...GN is very crowded and, IMO, nothing that exciting. DTG pool is on the roof, nice views, spread out so you are not laying on top of your neighbor, has decent bar and foot options and is "quiet" and relaxing.

...I get the same feel when comparing casinos...GN compact, low ceiling(?), and loud/crowded since it's right off the street. DTG is small but open, high ceilings, new machines, nice staff and never (unfortunately for them) over crowded.

...in three weeks, first two nights at GN and the next two nights at DTG (double booked with 4 nights at GG)...of the three, GN is #3. MK

 

Don't forget Pizza Rock and Triple George. Pizza Rock I think is the best overall restaurant downtown. Everything on the menu is incredible. Get the meatball app and New Yorker pizza.

 

I'm from New Jersey, home of the world's greatest pizza, and I have a very strict "I don't eat pizza outside of NJ" rule, because everytime I've left the state and tried pizza, it's been God awful. But Pizza Rock gets a lot of love from a lot of people, so next time I'm out there, I might have to give in and try a slice.

Thanks for the details guys. I'm just gonna have to book the room and hope they comp on the back end. If they don't no big deal, but It just sucks knowing that I have a comped room right down the street.

 

Might want to check out the thread this morning on DTG apparently scaling back things even more. Total agreement that its a nice place, but if they're going to cut back so that tables aren't open until noon or 2 pm (and close at 2 am), not a good sign and kills whatever energy there was at the place (I read somewhere else that there were only nine tables on the casino floor too).

I've stayed at the DTG the past two years, but probably will go back to the GN.

 

The New Yorker is a great choice, the ricotta provides just the right contrast. My new favorite is the sausage and stout pizza...sweet and savory. Can't go wrong with either choice.

I'd honestly go with the comp at GN. I've never been to either pool but I think you can get into DTG pool for $5.

 

DTG used to give out pretty easy food comps. You can't spend them at Pizza Rock, but they are good at Triple George and the Commissary. Every meal we have had at Triple George has been excellent. We like to sit at their huge bar and service is top notch. There are no coffeemakers in the room but the Commissary offers free coffee and tea to hotel guests during morning hours. The Commissary is a good option for lunch or light snacks but they are usually understaffed and easily overwhelmed. The S + O coffee shop has been a disaster since they opened and should be avoided at all costs. The pool is much more enjoyable than GN because it is not overrun with children. Much more of an adult club feel with a nice bar and snack menu.

 

Just a fyi, the free coffee ends at either 7 or 8 AM. Sleep in, you lose.

 

Based on my trip last week, if you need your friends to keep an eye on you, you should do every thing you can to make it easier on them. Think of the $300 as doing your friends' a solid, who are going to return the favor.

And the Downtown Grand is a nice place. I prefer it to GN for the same reasons as MKCoroner.

 

Agree with FullPay, the S+O coffee shop at DTG is awful. Avoid.

I'm going to use my DTG food credit next week at the Triple George (first time going there). Any recommendations on what to get?

We stayed in April, they had free coffee across the street till 10 am. We ate at S & O twice, both times the food and sevice were good. Just shows how hit and miss this place can be.

 

I had there Reuben it was very good. Also had the calamari very good. Check out their happy hours to max your comps.

 

I really like the Triple George. I have tried the chicken parm, chicken christopher, spicy shrimp and scallop linguine, and the chopped salad. All were really good except for the linguine. The shrimp and scallops were good but the sauce was just way too spicy for me so I couldn't eat much of the linguine part. It seemed like someone dumped a whole bottle of cayenne powder in it. Others that I have gone with enjoyed the pot pie and the roasted chicken. I have heard that the steaks and the pot roast are also very good. Their portions are quite large too so you won't leave hungry!

 

The fried chicken at Triple George is the best that I have had in Vegas and the three quarter pound burger is excellent for sharing. The calamari is always good, the spicy linguine dish was excellent if not just a tad too spicy.

 

Call the dtg and speak to a host or players club. Tell them about offer at golden nugget and see if they match. My buddy and I don't play much and both got comped rooms for the last weekend in August. I had booked golden nugget just like you with similar logic for pool but cancelled them. Can't beat free.

 

Ok. Slightly trolling here. I'm from Milwaukee AND German. I've had to expand my beer horizons somewhat over the years, so I understand your indigenous pizza tastes. But try Pizza Rock! I went there at 1 am on an empty stomach when I stayed at the DT Grand in July, and I couldn't finish 2 slices. Please give it a try.
