I'm considering having my luggage shipped to my hotel im Vegas. With the price of checking a bag it mgiht might be cheaper to send it via UPS. I get a discount through my employer. Has anybody had their luggage shipped to their hotel? What was the experience like?

Never did it but I know people who have done it. If it's cheaper then go for it.

You should check to see if the hotel charges a fee for accepting and holding your luggage. Most UPS (fed ex etc) shipments go through the property business store. Often they are not operated by the property. I have had parcels shipped to the hotel and the charge is based on the size of the parcel.

Yes, the problem is the hotel is going to charge a fee for receiving your luggage. From the Total Rewards site, these are the rates the CET hotels charge:

    Letters - $5.00 each
    Under 10 lbs - $10.00 each
    11-20 lbs - $15.00 each
    21-30 lbs - $20.00 each
    31-40 lbs - $30.00 each
    41-60 lbs - $40.00 each
    61-80 lbs - $50.00 each
    81-100 lbs - $80.00 each
    100+ lbs - $0.80 each additional pound
    Pallet/Skid/Crate - $400 each

Most people's luggage will fall in to the 31-50 lbs area, so the fee will probably be $30-40 per item you send to them.

You will also want to make sure you do a carry on with some of your basic necessities, including clothing, just in case there is a problem and either they reject your package or it doesn't arrive on schedule.

I looked into this quite seriously. It simply wasn't worth it. Unless you get a great discount from your employer, you'll find that taking/checking your bags will be cheaper by quite a margin! From Cincinnati, Ohio.

    Totally agree with this!

I get being frugal and saving money but we all play games that we are expected to lose money on then worry about these fees.

Not that they are small and don't add up but still seems like a hassle for what maybe $10

Good point I had a friend that had a package sent to him at NYNY, as others said mail takes quite the trip to get to the actual casino guest area. His box was lost for 5 days before they found it.

I have never done it but my sister has done it every year for the last five years.
She and her husband stay at the Signature for 10-14 days every Sept.
They pack most of their clothing in some kind of reinforced box and have it delivered to their room on arrival.
She says it works out about the same or a little less but they do it so they can avoid the loading suitcases in the car and then out at the airport. Then into the parking shuttle.............
Since my trips are 4- 5 days and I usually upgrade with miles so free luggage, it would not work for me.

I suppose it could be depending on how long your stay is... I've done this several times going back east from Reno... if I'm going to a conference for a week, I always ship my stuff. Cross-country travel is long and tiring and I love getting to the hotel in DC or Boston and my stuff is already there... I just call down and have it sent up. I love it. I need a couple suits, business casual-wear and workout/walkin' around clothes, so going for a week is a lotta stuff.

Is it cheaper? No, cause I fly Southwest and bags are free, but it sure take a bit of the hassle out of things for me. Unlike many, I don't measure the value of something by the nickel, but I've never had a hotel charge me. Looks like the Vegas hotels may include that as a profit center, so that ought to be a concern... I guess.

I have done it several times, but it's definitely not cheap. TI charges about $30 and of course there is the shipping both ways as well. I do it so my wife won't have to pull a suitcase. She has had surgery on her back, neck, and shoulders, so anything I can do to make things easier on her, I'm doing. My last trip, I did send my stuff to the post office on Swenson and picked it up there after the RCC. That saved quite a bit. I also took along a few of the large Priority Mail flat rate boxes and boxed up some things and shipped them home the day before we left.

For about the same cost, you can have your luggage lost, missing, etc.

    I don't get it.

Then again, I do not think I have every paid to check luggage.

United - Free with credit card
American - Free with credit card
    Southwest - 2 free bags.
Delta - free - thought their is an annual fee for the card

Lost luggage isn't really an issue anymore. Its a pain when it does happen, but the airlines mishandled less than 7 bags per 1000 passengers last year. That's really a pretty incredible performance, IMO.

I couldn't find any good stats on the UPS, Fed-Ex, etc, but there are some calculations that people have done based on the cost of insurance for packages. If those calculations are correct, the rate of lost packages is higher than the rate of lost luggage.

This is another of those do-what-works-for-you, I'm-different topics. What's "cost"? What's "convenience"? Statistical averages mean what to people who willingly take on the house edge of Vegas?

I fly often with a very large and some would say inconvenient bit of luggage known as my clubs. Actually, I typically can take on a trip of some length with a carry on since so much other stuff can go in the ClubGlove. I've not used any of the various shipping services but I have a friend who does at times.

When I mentioned "lost luggage" above, I meant to say "lost by the hotel". UPS and others do a great job, no doubt.

For us - between almost never paying the airline for luggage and the fact that we pack a few hours before we leave...not worth the hassle to ship.

This is like FedEx pushing shipping your clubs.

It simply isn't cheaper and maybe sort of more convenient but not really.

Shipping actual luggage would definitely not be economical.

I would consider shipping my golf clubs to vegas but it is expensive coming from Hawaii. I also go up for bowling tournaments but since my bag (both golf and bowling) will probably weigh in the 30 pounds it will be even more expensive. since I usually like to stop off in San Fran or elsewhere I don't want to lug my bag around to other cities. I thought about shipping my clubs at the end of the month but since vegas will still be in the 100's I don't think I want to play in that heat.

I have a Hawaiian airlines cc. First bag is free with the card, 2nd bag is $25. When you initially sign up for the card you get a companion flies free (I think, or at least at a discount - half off) certificate so for me it is worthwhile to have the card. I usually travel to vegas twice a year (or more) so the savings I get with the first bag free more than pays for the annual fee.
