Greenbrier Resort/Casino in West Virginia

Has anyone been to Greenbrier in WV before and did you enjoy it?

My company recently awarded me a 3-day trip to Greenbrier for me and the wife and we are trying to decide whether we should go.

One concern is that we live in Hawaii so it will take us a full day to get there and back with a minimum of 10 hours flying time each way. No direct flights to/from Hawaii so we'll probably have a connecting layover somewhere along the way as well. Another concern is that the resort has a strict dress code for both men and women. The last concern is that I've heard the resort tacks on a 20% automatic gratuity on all purchases in addition to a 6.5% historical preservation fee to maintain the property (plus, I would imagine, the WV sales tax).

On the plus side is the fact that the trip is free and the resort has a casino and I like to gamble.

It's supposed to be a four-star resort but it doesn't sound like it's everyone's cup of tea. I've read some Yelp reviews and most people seem to like it although a certain percentage seems to have absolutely hated it.

I'm wondering if perhaps we'd be happier paying for a trip to someplace like Vegas or Reno where I can gamble rather than taking a gamble on the location of the trip.

 

Nice place. A bit higher end.

Doubt I would fly cross county, and for sure from Hawaii to visit. Give me Vegas, or something else.

And, check your flight options, it might be 2 connections.

DRESS CODE
Before 7:00pm in the Casino Club: Resort attire (collared sport shirts, sweaters, slacks and walking shorts). If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours.
After 7:00pm in the Casino Club: JACKETS ARE REQUIRED FOR GENTLEMAN; dresses, evening suits, dress slacks for ladies. Hats and caps are not permitted. NO DENIM.

You did not mention if this was just for you and wife, or part of a company GROUP event. That could make a little difference.

If you go, I would ask the cost to do another day or two.

 

Is your company based near Greenbriar? Your company awarding a trip here seems like a slap in the face given your current location.

 

If I were you I wouldn't go that far to that destination. It is nice though especially if you golf! Maybe you can transfer it to another name? Like me your cousin wink wink! I would maybe a donation for it to help you on your next trip to Las Vegas!

I've been a few times and it's fun as a resort that just happens to have a min casino but I certainly wouldn't travel from Hawaii to experience it. The various resort fees will add up and you'll still be out of pocket a couple hundred for rooms alone. The dress code is enforced but as long as you have a sport coat your fine.

I work for an east coast based company so the resort is close for some employees, just not me. I'm about as far away as an employee can be from Greenbrier.

LOL. Unfortunately, the trip is not transferable. It's a use-it-or-lose-it type of situation.

 

I'd like to check the place out at some point. And as packer noted ... tee it up!!!!

Free is free, but I'd add some days going that far and make it a getaway. Now if you just need to gamble, stick with Vegas.

Looking at it another way -- life's too short to worry about such things, when you think about it.

 

I'd take the trip. I really enjoy the Greenbrier. Lovely grounds, excellent service, very good food. The casino is small and isn't open 24 hours (I think it opens around noon, if I recall correctly). If you go, take the bunker tour. It's an interesting bit of cold war history.
