i have a dilemma now. i'm booked at Encore this weekend as just room comp from host, whom i have a good working relationship and dont wanna burn bridges

however, i very much anticipate myself to significantly under-play the comp requirement (4 hr x $200-250 avg bet) that will result in a very severe over-comp.

what's my best path now ?
    1. be honest and notify host upfront that it'll one-time transgression, and ask for mercy
    2. ask host to pre-convert room booking from comp to casino rate
    3. play extra hours (e.g. 8 hr x $50) and hope his anger will be contained

    or some other path? thanks.

ps : i have few choices since the rack rate at other properties are super high this weekend (no less than the casino rate at Encore)

Don't say anything. Go and play at the level you want and have fun! That's it.. You have a history and he wont/shouldn't throw it in your face. You are the guest and they work for you. You haven't burned them before and you have never wanted something for nothing so don't worry.

Wow, do I not get this. I'll admit to not being a host level player, but there seems to be some comp enabled magical thinking here.

Wanting to maintain the working relationship makes sense. One would hope the heads up would be a good move towards that so that the host is less apt to take it personally. But my guess is the math will be the math and future offers will get worse.

But the notion of asking to pay rate? What is the fear if you get overcomped? The worst they can do is ask you to pay rate (or more, but unlikely) on a future trip. If you aren't afraid of doing that, why sweat the issue?

Likewise, playing more than you want to just to appease the host? At the end of the day, its your vacation. What is so great about a host relationship if you need to do something you don't want to to maintain it? And you would quite possibly lose more within those 8 hours than just paying for stuff next trip would cost.

Since you don't gamble enough to have a host, you just won't understand a player-host relationship and you probably don't need to offend anyone by calling their thinking "comp enabled magical thinking" as if they had an inferior intellect.
I agree with Packer's advice, no comp enabled magical thinking required.

I don't accept the premise that the suggestion of magical thinking implies inferior intellect.

Many incredibly smart players get looped into chasing comps, into making suboptimal bets, into reading trends in games that do not in fact exist. It is about psychology, not intellect.

And I don't see what's wrong with a person detached from the situation pointing out that the proposed approaches constitute robbing Peter to pay Paul in a negative sum game. I don't understand the car customer-Bentley dealer relationship either, but I would probably think that a person proposing to pay sticker for a 2015 Flying Spur model because they normally buy a Mulsanne, or pay for an upgrade they don't want ... so they can still get the "hookup" on the 2017 is not acting rationally. The "hookup" is still a profit for the dealer.

The bottom line is that the OP is asking for advice on his situation, and since you don't have a host, you can't possibly understand his situation, and so you probably shouldn't be offering advice, let alone accusing him of "magical thinking", whatever that means.
Stick with giving advice about what you know, instead of spouting off about what you don't know.

I remember a similar situation that I was in where I knew that I wouldn't make my comp minimum, and relayed that information to my host in advance.

Her reply was "Don't worry, you have plenty of good trips to cover one bad one.".

Would I provide such advice in the future? It depends on whether or not I wanted to preserve the relationship. In my case, For mLife, no for CET or V/P, most definitely yes.

I wouldnt say anything in advance because you dont know what will happen on the trip. What if you hit a hot streak early in your 8 hr 50.00 per hand scenario and end up betting 200-250 after 3 hours because you are up so much. Then the rest of the trip you bet 150-250 because you stay hot or at least break even the rest of the way. It might be a slight underplay but if you havent burned them before it wont even register as a low play trip.

The only way I would say anything before hand is if some kind of financial hardship or large sum purchase had to be made. You could then inform them that this happened and if you lose a lot early you might not be able to play to your normal level. More than likely if you havent burned them in the past, they will understand and you will at least have 1 more future trip where they will comp you as normal and if you underplay again then your offers or comps will be lowered.

I know I have talked to my host before hand to tell him that I am playing in wsop events and if I run well I will have 0 table play for a day or 2. Which has happened. He said he understands and that is basically the only time I underplay. You have to realize that most of the time you are actually under comped, so if 10% or less of the time you underplay and it is not something major, they are not going to bat and eye.

I never have had a host, but I always assumed your offers were based on previous play and not what ifs.
Your very first trip wasn't comped, but after looking at your play the future one was, based on previous play.
I'm sure if you have dealt with the host previously and have a history, I don't see anything wrong with playing less.
Look at it another way, you get to town and suddenly fall ill or bed ridden, how would you accomplish meeting the threshold required then?

Don't worry. Go and have fun. If your host asks or gives you a hard time say I was going to play a lot of craps this trip, and I saw you guys only offered 2x odds, so I had to go to another casino to play craps.

thanks everyone. I'll just take your advices by keeping my mouth shut.

the situation was that i have another big trip coming soon at Aria that I plan to do some major gaming, so I prefer to save my cash for that big trip.

    Best advice here.

Some of my biggest trips have started with me thinking I was going to low play and trying not to spend too many comps upfront and then I ended up either going on a heater or chasing all night long and putting up huge numbers.

Ironically some of my lowest play trips where I was ridiculously overcomped and really pissed off my host I planned on playing a lot but it just didn't work out.

Absolutely agree. So OP. don't say anything. And, if you don't play at all don't worry. too much...
