Thanks so much for the downtown report! I will try out the El Cortez in October when I go. I also printed out the Vic and Anthony's fixed menu and want to try out Pizza Rock and maybe even the Heart Attack Grill chili and cheese fries. Great info, I look forward to my visit!

Great TR. My last visit to DT included a trip to Vic and Anthony's at the Golden Nugget and I had the exact same $49.95 prix-fixe meal that you did (bisque, filet, green beans and creme brule) and I agree 100% with your assessment. Everything was outstanding and I'm definitely going back there on my next LV trip! Can't recommend this enough.

Outstanding write up. Did you gamble at the DTG? Not the most hopping place in the world, but I think you'd like it. Agree that Pizza Rock is a good place, and I think you'd also enjoy Triple George next door. Thanks again for the great read!

"I am not sold on the necessity of half naked women dancing on platforms above the table games. And that’s not just a critique of The D. And I know it’s more about me at this state in my life than it is about Casino Marketing. The Golden Gate, Binions, and The D all seemed to have women in different states of undress either dealing the table games or dancing behind the table games. I didn’t enjoy it…doesn’t create a setting I feel like gaming in. I get it – some people want that setting but it’s not for me. Not a setting I feel like gambling in, let alone sitting down with my girlfriend to play blackjack in. I know Vegas is sin city. Sex is sex. Nakedness is fine. I just don’t need the fusion of that aspect of Vegas directly *with* the gaming. "

    So refreshing.....coming from a man.
    LOVED the report!!!!

Wow.......you sir, wrote a masterpiece. Downtown used to be my home base for years until Binions and Golden Nugget went through ownership changes/issues/challenges. I also grew tired of the ever growing population of desperate and/or homeless people that were everywhere you turned.....both in and out of the casinos. My last trip in May I was dead set on returning......but unfortunately I never made it down town. I am heading back to Vegas here in about two weeks and after reading your report I will be sure to dedicate an entire day to Downtown from Sun up to past sun down. I am going to make my itinerary based off of this incredibly well written report. I can't wait to go gamble in El Cortez (never been), eat at pizza rock (I love pizza and ate at 550 and secret pizza my last trip to vegas) and looking forward to checking out the MSS. (also never been)

    Bravo:nworthy:

oh and what a bummer about Magnolias........was for years my favorite place to eat down town. I loved their gumbo.....fan freakin tastic

How in the hell did I not know about this? I have been downtown for some or all of my last 10 trips and I never knew about this. Thank you for that!

Charlie Palmer Steak at the Mandalay Bay also has a fixed-price menu, though it changes weekly. I put this here for those who didn't know (as I hadn't known about Vic and Anthony's).

We spent a little time walking around the DTG. Think I found a double deck BJ game but the dealer seemed a bit unfriendly so we didn't bother. We were there for the Thursday night free comedy show and hunger won out over gambling so we ended up at the nice little lounge down the north end of the building near the comedy club. I would gamble there sometime.

Hey thanks for your kind words. People's positive comments really made my day as I thought I had written so much and so much detail that I was a lunatic. Seeing some people actually made it through the entire thing and appreciated it makes me feel great.

I just love the city and totally enjoyed sharing my thoughts on the trip.

You're the 2nd person to mention secret pizza to me, I will need to look into that!

Great TR! Sad to hear about Magnolia's - we stayed @4Q last fall and ate there twice and had no issues. Good food, good price - odd to find that level of lack of service in a city where service is one of the main industries. Heart Attack Grill sounds fun, will need to try on our next trip!

Well..this is Metal Rich..Kev's brother from another mother LOL. Like I told Kevin, this was a great Trip Report. I don't know anyone who has the patience to write this much about Vegas, except for me! There's so much! I love The D! I love the flair bartenders, I love the scantily clad dealer/dancers, I just love the whole atmosphere! The king "D bed" is the best I've ever slept on! That said, my gf and I just love downtown. We've stayed there 5 of our 7 trips together since. This was my 11th trip, I'll post a report later. I never had a bad experience at Magnolia's, but have only eaten there twice. Du-Par's is the better choice..as well as the D Grill at The D. Also agree that parents don't need to bring their pre pubescent children down to Fremont Street. They don't need to see any of that. Had a great dinner with Kev and his spouse at Pizza Rock..thank him again for suggesting it. Great 20th anniversary of mine and Kev's first trip to Vegas together! Must do it again!!! Cheers!!

Great report Kev and loaded with info. Thank you for posting. I'm a "strip girl" but often venture downtown for an evening of good gambling and just when I think I should spend a night or two downtown, something puts me off and I put that idea out of my head for a year or two. Last venture downtown it was the "get your photo taken with me half-naked that shouldn't be or cupid-like diaper guys". The time prior it was sitting down at a slot machine in the GN, thinking "crap the seat is soaked, someone spilled a drink"....then gross horror realizing it wasn't a drink when I smelled the piss and had to get a cab back to the strip to shower and burn my clothes. I do enjoy blackjack downtown...so I'll just make sure the seat is dry, lol.

Good format. If I write a trip report this may be the summary I go with. Thanks for all of the good information and I look forward to Downtown in December.

Thanks for the heads up about 'Casino Confidential'. I've just found the full episodes on youtube and I've got a feeling it could be a long night!

I think a US cable network (TLC) started showing this and it lasted about two (horrible) episodes. One had a totally-unprepared staff for a poker tournament (and I am positive that would never happen in real life) and another a couldn't-be-real scenario about a showgirl starting a fight in Binions bar.

I like Vegasey TV shows, but even this was so bad that I didn't "miss" the episodes not shown.

Well I only found 2 episodes in the end. You're right it wasn't great but to be honest I was glad to get my Vegas fix for 35 minutes or so!

    Great Report.

You sound a lot like my husband and I. We love staying downtown for all of the reasons you do. We typically stay at The Golden Nugget as well and our favorite gambling spot is El Cortez.

It's been almost 2 years since we've been and am ready to head back.

Thanks for your honest account of the trip.

Thanks for your great report. We are staying at GN
In November. Have stayed there twice but have not
    eaten at Vic and Anthony's.
Do I need to have a hard copy of the prefix menu
    Or just ask for it?

I am disappointed to hear about dealers without enough
Clothes on. There is a time and place for everything.
Gambling and nudity don't mix, imo, unless it's strip poker.
And I don't think that is offered in casinos.
