Who do you tip when you win a slot machine hand pay?

I won a nice jackpot this week(pretty cool story).

A lady came over and had a conversation with me and was really friendly and helpful.

    I planned to tip her.

She went to do something and while she was gone, two guys came over and paid me. I only saw them for that 30 seconds.

Am I supposed to tip those guys?

I ran into the lady again and tipped her $100, but I didn't tip the guys that paid me.

    Should I have? :confused2:

    Completely up to you.

I've gotten two hand pays. First was a progressive quarter royal at the Vu bartops in The D, one thousand eighty and change, gave the slot girl twenty and tipped the barkeep twenty on my next drink. I probably could have skipped the slot attendant since this wasn't even a W2G transaction. Second time was my dealt royal on quarters ten play. All night two of the slot attendants had been bringing me my scratch cards for quads (at the MSS) very quickly. The hand pay took forever (partly because they had my old zip code on file), but I gave them two hundred (after inquiring if tips were pooled) and let them know it was because of the two ladies that had been awesome all night. So both occasions were about 2% tips. I don't believe in Karma but I believe the world would be better if everyone pretended it existed.

Why tip at all? Your machine locked up, you had to waste your time waiting for the people to show up, fill out the paper work, then get your money. On any table game if you won the same ammount you could just color up and go to the cage and get your money. No paper work, no waiting for three or four people to show up and pay you. To me tipping for a hand pay is just rewarding the slot people for wasting my time and letting the IRS know that I had a bit of luck.

I tipped the lady $100 for providing great service.

She engaged in friendly conversation while I waited and hooked me up with my first host.

But the guys just walked up, had me sign, and paid me. I only felt weird because it was a big jackpot.

I've tipped and I haven't tipped. I think if I were to hit a hand pay now I wouldn't. Tipping is supposed to be for rewarding a service. I don' t see anyone providing a service above and beyond paying me for a win, that I won. It just doesn't make sense to me anymore. Unless, I win such a huge amount, a small tip doesn't matter lol.

Tipping is strictly a personal choice. I'm a more moderate tipper than the OP, but do tip for hand pays - to the person who arrives first to get things started and the person who actually counts out the money to me. I have favorites who always come talk to me and address me by name even when I'm not winning - those folks get the bigger tips when they handle the hand pay.

Why? Maybe cause I think it brings good karma, maybe cause it makes the recipients feel good, maybe cause it makes me feel good - no matter - it's paying it forward and I feel what goes around, comes around. If I couldn't afford to tip, I wouldn't feel bad about not giving one - each circumstance is different.

There have been quite a few threads on this subject here over the years... Who to tip? How much? Percentage or straight amount? Should you even tip at all?

And of course there is no consensus on the subject at all :) :) :)

With all tipping I think it has to be who you want to tip and for an amount you feel comfortable with. Personally I tip slot attendants on hand pays, but only if they provide some good service (prompt in getting there, quickly fill out my paperwork if in the USA, get me my money in a timely fashion) and for that I will usually tip $10, $20 if I felt they were exceptional or went above and beyond.

In a related note, does anyone tip after a big win at a sportsbook? I've hit a bunch of parlays over the years for 4 figures, but have never tipped. I know personal preference. Just interested in other people's habits

Buddy and I. playing Vp at Gustav's at the Paris, he hits a $2000 royal and some dude with a fannypack comes out 20 min later. He gets nothing, barkeep get a $100 . He's the guy we were engaging for a few hours. Needless to say our drinks we always refilled in lightning speed

I tip...but not slot attendants or the key people...
I don't know if I've told this story before, but once in Reno, I had been playing all morning at the bar (25c single line) and had been engaging in conversation with the barkeep...but they all knew me anyway, cuz I was there every weekend...she was telling me how her water pump just went out on her car, and it was going to cost a few hundred to get it fixed...so anyway, later on that morning, I got a 4card Royal...i told her if I popped it, I'd hand her a crisp $100....needless to say, it popped, so I handed her over a crisp $100, which completely blew her mind, hahaha.
Now, if I had been waaay down that day, I might not have done that...but i was up a little anyway..so why not.

It's my understanding that slot attendants pool their tips. I always check and if they do, "pay it forward".

    Typically, $20 each.

    A few comments.

Great service? $100? They did their job and were paid a reasonable wage, but surely not worth way over $100 an hour to do it.

some people think they should pay a percent. That logic totally baffles me. These folks were not there when you lost thousands of dollars. Nor will they be there when you put all that hand pay back in the machine. Or when you pay taxes, or at least get screwed somehow with tax rules that impact the number on page one of your 1040 BEFORE any offsetting deductions.

Giving somebody $10 or $20 to show you gratitude is one thing, but a percent or hundreds defies logic.

    nice

    Hitting a handpay :peace:

Wow, a wonderful experience, and a great slot attendant/High limit slot host
can make it even more fun!
That rare, energetic bubbly, happy you won person will get a tip!
/freedom of choice, it's all yours!

The humdrum lifeless, living dead slot attendant, that's acting like your sweating
them personally from their 401K, in $100 bills, not so much.

The other day my mom hit a $1400 hand pay and she tipped $10. I think that's pretty standard.

$100 seems like a lot, but I guess it could be normal if it was a really big jackpot. Nothing wrong with leaving a big tip if you're winning and having a good time!

    Thanks for all the input.

Another thing was I only had $100 bills and $5 bills(for drink tips).

Next time I'll have some $20s on hand to tip.

If you need smaller bills then you can just ask them to break some down for you when they are paying you or when they are done. Like if they gave you all $100s and then broke one down to five $20s and you only want to tip $10 then just have them break one of the $20s down.

I've hit well over 100 hand pays. If it's a quarter royal or $1200 slot hit etc, they will bring 5-$20's as part of the handpay to elicit a tip. (Knowing that $100 isn't coming their way) On larger jackpots, $4000 and up, sometimes they will pay in straight 100's, knowing that you may very well throw them a Benjamin or have to make the effort to ask for change. Yes, they are shrewd.

tips are a thanks for services rendered

or a grease to get something done.

I don't tip people that do nothing for me.

I had several hand pays a few years ago and it never occurred to me to tip the slot attendants. I haven't had one since I read about the idea on here. I don't know if I would even think of it if I had one now.

Now, on table games, I do tip on big wins and some smaller ones.
