    So, yeah...
    Central Valley = $40k
    Bay Area = $80k

I guess 60 miles and 45 minutes on the light-rail, twice a day won't be too bad...

Congrats, Tim! Commutes drag but at least you have rail for the ugly part, and as, V says, doubling down as you did, a no brainer.

There is that. We left So Cal for the Central Coast. Second-best decision we ever made.

    Tim,

Congrats! It sounds like you'll be in Vegas for VMB group craps.

yeah, a move to the edge of the valley will certainly be in order...as my wife works at the edge of the valley already...
Only drawback is salary vs hourly...

For $40,000 more a year. Yes commute. I used to make an hour plus drive 70 miles one way back and forth for 14 years. Got tired of the drive and took a pay cut to work in my hometown. With 12 hour shifts and about 2 1/2 hours on the road it got to be too much. But you are still young and taking the rail and not driving much better.

I'm in pain as a result of extreme gluttony. Bone-in ribeye with pan seared foie gras and lobster tail at Gordon Ramsay Steak tonight. Of course I just had to devour the sticky toffee pudding as well, so I'm officially a beached whale. Great meal. Each bite of fatty crusted ribeye with a thin slice of foie was pretty amazing.

Many people on Oahu work in the downtown area and it is normally a 45 minute to an hour commute by car (15 to 40 miles) so your commute wouldn't be a show stopper for many here. They are building a rail to get into town so it will be an alternative to driving and in the next few decades it should be able to handle increased ridership while our freeways get more congested.

Me, I work about 10 minutes away by car. I used to bike to work but it got too dangerous (cars running me off the road, tailgating me, trying to pass me in my lane) so now I just drive to work. I could also walk to work, takes about 35 minutes but it is a little unpleasant during the summer when it is hot and muggy.

So many will gladly take a little longer to get to work (and home) if they get paid double. It's not like some people who take 2 hours to drive to work and 2 hours to drive back home.
