DH and I will be in Vegas next month and we are thinking about doing something different. He was thinking about going to Red Rock Canyon, I was thinking about Valley of Fire. Anyone have any preferences and why did you like one more than the other?

I forgot to add, I like to take photographs, but am a long way from professional. I do use a DSLR and love it. Most of the time photos turn out great, but I am still learning the ins and outs of it.

Honestly they're both great. Valley of fire had more impressive photo ops. Tough call. I would recommend whichever one is closer.

RR is great but if you want spectacular, go to VOF. Just remember that it will be very hot at whichever one you choose so be careful. You'll get more shots from the side of the road at VOF than at RR where you might have to do some hiking.

It will be HOT at either place. Both are beautiful. I agree that VOF is more spectacular but if you're a hiker then RR is great.

If you want cooler and hike then think about Mount Charleston.

If you can do a longer drive then think about Zion National Park.

Both are beautiful-Great place for some fresh air!

Both are beautiful, and both very day-tripper worthy!

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, B.L.M. Conservation area
Red Rocks, is closer to Las Vegas & plenty of beautiful geological formations to see.

The Public area has a Main Ring road, that you can drive & park/hike & explore.
At Red Rocks is a 2-4 Hour Trip.

Valley of Fire State Park, a Nevada State Park.
Valley of Fire is a bit farther from downtown Las Vegas,
The Park is approximately 35,000 acres.
It has Multiple places to drive to, park hike & explore.
At Valley of Fire is 4-8+ Hour Trip.

A Must for us on the way back to Las Vegas is stop at the Moapa Travel Plaza, for Cold Drinks & Slots
(They sell fireworks & have a place to shoot them off too, fun times after sunset !)

+1 for Valley of Fire for being more visually impressive and overall more enjoyable. However, Red Rock is cool, too. If you do Red Rock, I'd recommend spending the majority of your time at the very first stop along the road. It's really the only spot that has "red" rocks of the numerous stops throughout the scenic loop road.

Red rock Canyon is a very nice place with great vistas if you want to see for a 100 miles, but if you want a strange almost alien place up in your face than Valley of Fire is the place.
