    Star Lane 2011 Cabernet Franc

We tried and got a few bottles of this in our shipment when released last year, and then this past weekend we took friends to Dierberg-Star Lane and had another go at it. Put it this way ... we bought a case. It is most bueno to go now and will just get better over the next three or five years.

This one is more daily priced. 2012 was a phenomenal Pinot year around here. A really good Pinot year around here.

    :)

I'm just throwing out a few ideas and hope others do, too. I'm no expert, no somm, and I admit to a regional bias because, well, it's where we live so it makes sense to try to figure some of it out locally. And there is a lot of garagiste to what's going on around here, so it's all very personal and hands on; it's a small town, and that helps, too. I play golf with a couple winemakers and you just run in to the lot of them here and there. It's cool. If we lived in Salem, OR, I'm sure we'd have a lot of Eola-Amity Hills stuff on hand.

Funny you mention winemakers and golf Ken.
Years ago, back in late 80's if my aging memory works, my brother worked for a guy who was going all in in the wine business in Oakville. He had 3 golf holes on his personal estate.
    Eccentric guy named Bill Harlan.

Just keep adding to the list. I know next to nothing about wine but I like to buy a nice bottle for the wife here and there. This thread will help a lot :)

A group of us were having dinner at the local chophouse and a couple guys sitting next to us offered a swap of wine. We sent over what was left of our Insignia and Opus and they sent over what was about a glass and a half of Harlan which we passed around the table. Still one of the best wine memories I have.

Ken, what are your current favorite Chardonnays from California wineries?

    That's cool.

Kelly, I'm not exactly expert on Chardonnay, and I definitely trend toward some to very little of the "California" style that seems to have been in vogue for so long (though I think we're seeing a lot more diversity now). Locally -- we live in northern Santa Barbara County -- I'd suggest Lincourt (many of the same grapes and same winemaker as Foley but lesser priced), Foley, Transcendence, Clos Pepe (2015 will be the last vintage at Clos Pepe). Drop me a line if you want specific recs from each house, and maybe an idea of what style you like.

I'm not sure how far Babcock goes, but a great "table" wine. We like it more than some of their vineyard-designate offerings. '10 and particularly '12 were great years around here. '11 was tough on some as they got sloppy getting grapes off timely in a weird season. We're getting into some 2009 Prodigal Pinot now. We went in on two barrels with friends when Prodigal decided to pack it in.

Terri would kill me if I didn't reference Dierberg Chardonnay.

Years years years back I lived in Sonoma County, when I caught the wine bug. I just really haven't kept pace with north bay and redwood happenings. I mean, we have a few from which we'll buy or drink but re-education is sorely in order. That's why I hope others get in the game here. I hope we get some Oregon input, too.
