Things to do in Las Vegas if you do not like to gamble

People chimed in with some good ideas.
This is what he said after his trip.

Here are my impressions of my trip to Las Vegas:

    1. You cannot pretend to gamble and get free drinks. The waitresses were quite aggressive about making very sure that you were actually sitting down, putting money into the machine in front of you, before they would take an order. Then the waitresses took a long time to bring the free drinks to you, and if you did not stay where you had given the order, they did not go looking for you. It is a smart way to make people sit there and keep gambling, just to relieve the boredom of the wait if nothing else.

    2. The sheer size of the hotels and connecting shopping and eating areas was astonishing to me. I did not expect to see such physically large, very high end shopping areas. The Venetian and other hotel lobbies and hallways were so opulently decorated. If any of the decorations had been real, they would have been priceless.

    3. The Bellagio fountains were fun to see once, then they became old hat.

    4. The huge number of people walking around between the casinos and hotels surprised me. The sidewalks were congested at night especially. I did not expect everything to be so big and congested.

    5. I now understand that a large part of the appeal of the Strip is the ability to drink excessively, publicly and openly out on the sidewalks, to carry your glass of booze or oversized margarita container with you, in and out of buildings. Drinking seems to be so important.

    6. If you had told me in 1975 that in 2015 , the stars of ANYTHING big and prosperous would be Donny and Marie Osmond, and Olivia Newton John, I would have laughed.

    7. The shows may be good, but they are certainly expensive, and it is a major effort to walk through the dense pedestrian crowds to get to them. We did not give ourselves enough time to walk to a show two hotels down the Strip, as we started walking only 45 minutes ahead of time.

    8. I really liked the old downtown area, the Fulton Street area, better than the Strip.

    9. The open drinking, many street performers in costume or with routines, and general semi-craziness, reminded me of the University of Wisconsin in the early 1970s, only there was no gambling in Madison, and fewer people. But I had seen this kind of thing before.

    10. The large crowds of people on the streets going from bar to bar, or bar to restaurant, was not too much different than walking in crowded entertainment districts in other very large cities, except that there is no gambling in those other large cities.

    11. I was surprised at the large numbers of people speaking in European languages, and the large number of Asian people. Really? You travel to America and choose to blow a ton of money seeing Las Vegas, out of all of the choices in the U.S.?

    12. The people I was with were not open at all to trips into the desert, to parks or attractions outside the city. I needed to maintain friendly ties with them, so I did not do any of that.

    13. The prostitutes were openly and obviously out in force late at night, many of them quite well dressed. I was aggressively approached on the sidewalks in front of hotels, and there were many of them sitting in the gambling area at the MGM Grand hotel.

    14. It was not as painful as I had thought it might be, but it is not a place I ever want to go to again either.

Sounds like a grumpy old man who hates people lol
I would argue that it is pretty easy to "fake gamble" and get drinks though.. the waitresses want tips.. so keep tipping and you will get drinks regardless.. bigger tips equals better service..

A few more things he said

On the sidewalk in the area in front of Margaritaville, the Flamingo and the Cromwell casino entrances, two blonde prostitutes asked me what I was doing tonight daddy, and then a very nicely dressed black prostitute grabbed my arm, pushed me to the wall and asked me to go have a good time. I asked her to let go and she would not. I had to physically separate myself from her grip and walk away. I was told later by my friends that because I am an older looking white guy and was walking alone at 2 a.m., I was seen as an easy target, and as someone who could probably pay.

When I hear the no gambling thingy (quite frequently, in fact), I always reply that there are plenty of other things to do and see in Vegas ... the first time. After that, I can't imagine!

People who don't get Vegas dwell on the negativity because they can't feel or see the intent and vibe of the place. People who are addicted to Vegas often can't see it's obvious warts and shortcomings.

Don't take his critique personally. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about Vegas no matter how wrong it is.

Opinions are wrong? lol I just thought they were personal entitlements. It's like that great Dr. Evil line about hating two things in this world, the Dutch and those intolerant of other cultures.

I don't gamble - and I go to Las Vegas twice a month. The entertainment, dining and shopping choices are outstanding.

I'm surprised they didn't say anything about the smoking.

everybody always complains about the smoking.

Convincing those who don't want to be convinced is futile. I have friends who've never been to Hawaii. And when I tell them all the reasons why they need to hit the islands, they just gloss over and mutter something about not enjoying Hawaii or not being interested ... again, keeping in mind they've never been there. Some people don't "get" NYC or a trip through the North Cascades or a food/music junket in Austin or wherever. You just hope they've at least tried it once before dismissing it.
