A friend visited a local casino and bet $100 on #27.... it did not hit BUT! #28 hit instead.

One twist the croupier paid out all bets on #27 as there were no bets on #28.

    1. Has this or anything ever happen to you?

    2. What will happen to the croupier?

Mistakes happen but that sounds like far from a mistake. In my casino, had it been caught by the eye in the sky, management and the gaming commission would have been down collecting all the bets that should not have been paid, those refusing to pay it back would be arrested (iv seen it several times). Those that no longer have the money will be documented and when they come in the casino again the facial rec will pick them up and guess what, they will be expected to pay it back.

If it was not caught, the dealer needs to hope that is not the point they decide to go back and review footage for a random audit (they do those), either way, they are likely to be giving some coaching .

If its not caught, its no harm no foul but I am an honest player and would have called the dealer out and not taken the money, karma has a way of sneaking up.

happens in blackjack here and there at my local place.. I have gotten paid on a push and stuff like that. One time I split aces and your only supposed to get one card after splitting aces but he kept looking at me for action so I doubled both of my soft hands and made a killing lol. i did not have to pay anything back even though the pit bosses got word from above what happened. just a slap on the wrist, dont do it again

Must have been a new dealer, but all of us makes mistakes. Iv been dealing for nearly three years and just recently I forgot to give myself cards, kinda funny but the players did not think so.

Every casino handles payment mistakes differently. Ours is very anal about getting the money back if they know about it. Iv seen them come after a guy for a white chip once, that shocked me.

On the roulette spin, I would have to let the dealer know that she is mistakenly paying me..Why you ask, 1 word-KARMA!

Some mistakes you can feign ignorance. Getting paid on the wrong number at roulette is probably not one of them.

I had a $75 table play earlier this year, you can only do the outside 1-1 bets with it. so on roullette I placed it on 1-18 of course "19" hit, i said damn missed it by one number and walked away with my friend, we couldnt find another table to get on as they were packed, walking back by that table, the dealer calls me over by name and says "what, you thought you didnt win" i said o i been drinking, my friend said many they just give you money even when you lose. the pitboss was right next to her and ok'ed it

about a month later my friend done the opposite of mine, he had a $10 table play...he put it on 19-36 and of course 18 hits, they paid him

i let some slide as ive seen some dealers overpay and just last week the dealer "almost" underpaid everyone at the table...almost shorted me $400 on one payout

I'm not sure I buy your friend's story.

There's a difference between simply making a mistake and paying the wrong number, vs. "paid out all bets on #27 as there were no bets on #28"

27 and 28 are not next to each other, they're in different rows and they're different colors, so it's almost impossible to believe it was a mistake. So it had to be intentional, and this dealer's paying out 35:1 including on a $100 bet? How many different winners? You would think someone's reaction would have tipped him off.

Your friend is probably lying or just wondering what would happen if it ever did happen.

There are a few issues with the story:

27 and 28 are not sequential on the layout (or the wheel). The columns go:
    27 30
    26 29
    25 28

When the number comes up and the dealer calls out "Twenty seven, red, odd" thats totally different from "Twenty eight, black, even"

Pays aren't instantaneous. The dealer is first going to put that little plastic thingy on top of the winning number, then check all the bets that win on that number, then start to count out roulette chips and casino chips (if applicable) for each player. That will usually take a minute or two or three, one a busy table it can take some time, and I would assume at some point during that time the pit boss would have come over and looked at the layout, seen where the dealer put the plastic thing and what slot has the ball in the wheel. The tote board would have probably been showing 28 as well.

If there is a big win, in this case the $100 being paid out, the dealer would have announced it and if the pit boss wasn't just coming over to check on things as part of his/her duty they would have come over to witness and verify the win/payout.

Did it get paid as a STRAIGHT UP bet? (35:1) or did it get paid as a SPLIT BET (17:1)? Perhaps the dealer thought it was a $100 27-28 split? (Depending on the EXACT placement of the chip it could have been argued)

EDIT: Auggie beat me to it (I haven't played roulette in a while) 27 is on the right, no way to SPLIT with 28

to add to this i cant remember the exact amount, its $500-$700 one of those that a dealer cannot send out until a pit boss comes and verifies it...this slows the game down when its busy

I've only ever experienced one really obvious dealer screw-up, and that was at UTH.
The board had trips, so everyone's Trips bet was going to be paid... but the dealer never realized that she had also paired up one of her hole-cards, for a full-house.
Anyway, she's paying everybody for a win if they beat her high card in the hole...which was an 8 or 9.
This is a full table, and we're all looking at each other kind of sheepishly, but nobody is saying anything.
One guy even has the gall to call her out on not being paid for his LOWER full house! Amazingly, she pays him for the win & for the full house on the Trips & Blind bets. What amazed me more is that she called the pit over to explain why she was backing up to pay him "properly" for his full house. Pit looked at the hand and said "pay him", and walked off. He missed the dealer's full house as well!!

Needless to say, on the next hand, everyone had tips out for her on the Trips bet, ranging from $5 to $10... and none of us felt guilty, since the pit came over and looked at the the entire table and never said a word.

Now, there have been times at Freebet when the dealer get's 22 and she paid it as if it was a bust... When that happens, I just parlay the "win" for the next hand, and continue to do so until the pressed-bet loses. Then I go back to my base bet.
I'm not going to say anything, as that would cost other players & also possibly get the dealer in trouble... I just "give it back" by betting more until the higher bet loses.

This varies by the internal controls of the property. At my property it use to be we could send $300 fine but $301 and up required approval. They changed it to $201 and up for approval because some idiot made a huge mistake and could not count.

On a mistake note, I made one tonight and realized it on break. A player had $25 on the Royal Match bet, hit it for 50:1 for $1250, I paid $1275 and the supervisor approved it. Guy colors up, no tip for us of course and runs to the cage. I let it go, he was gone and nothing could be done since he did not have a card in the table to note his account on the over payment.

What amazes me, and reading some of the replies on this board, if a dealer makes a mistake in the the casinos favor even for $1.00 people will yell as loud as can be to get that money, but pay someone to much and MOST will accept it and play. Im always amazed when I see an honest player at my casino, I'm jaded anymore due to the job.

I have had a few errors from the dealer that benefitted me.

At a main casino on the strip I had $12 6/8 and there were other big bettors around me. They paid me as if my bet was $66 so I won 77. The 6 hit again and he was about to do it again but caught himself before giving it to me. I think he knew his first mistake but was not sure he did it. All other players got paid accurately or I would not have taken it.

On a cruise boat, I had a few times where the player 7'd out and they never took my passline bet.

I generally won't take wrong or mistaken payoffs. I say generally because there were a couple times when I was paid for a bet I didn't make, and when I disputed it, the box and/or the pit were adamant that I did and to take the payout. All in craps. One was a hard 10 and a $7 payoff. Another time was a hard 6 for $18. Nothing big, but still. I also had my bet upped by $12 each on 6 and 8 after a dealer kept messing up on my bets and missing payouts. Next roll was SO, so I didn't collect on that, but it was an interesting way to handle me not getting paid previously. They were all crews I was familiar with, or rather familiar with me since I'm a frequent, though not big, tipper. If I'm winning, though, my favorite crews win, too. Maybe that had something to do with it, maybe not. Otherwise, I don't take money I didn't earn or win. Like everyone said, bad karma.

I used to always point out mistakes in my favor (although uncommon) but then I read something (here I think) that the dealer catches heat from the pit if you do point out the mistakes so it is just better for everyone to let it go. The last time I did it, the dealer kind of rolled his eyes and gave me a look like "dude I wish you would have just kept your mouth shut and taken the money" before calling over the pit.

I am sure it varies by property. At mine, if you make the same mistake over and over they are going to call you in for a talking to. Also, if a dealer is doing it regularly, especially with the same player, the gaming commission is going to take note and will be keeping tabs to see if its some type of cheat going on. Some pit critters will give you a hard time even if its the fist mistake you ever made, some of them think they are god and that they are the best and you better not bother them. Others are understanding and on our level. The inside joke is that the only way to become a suit is to prove you cannot deal cards. Obviously its not true, we had some awesome dealers become suits.

Funny story since I bet blacks on 27 myself.
Your friend is mistaken at best and absolutely full of it at worst.
As has been noted the only way would have been a split bet but even that would have been scrutinized at a small joint.
How well do you know your "friend?"
