Sparkling/red wines while gambling

Hi there,

Does anyone know if or where u can get some decent red wines/ sparkling wines or champagne while gambling at the sluts or tables?
We are staying at mb and the mirage.

Can u order specific brands or do u just get some headache house wines?

I've never had much luck gambling at the sluts!

High limit slots areas of casinos are more likely to offer upgraded wine choices. You'd not be likely to be able to call order a wine starting at ground zero, but you might try what I do with liquor. I scout the casino's bars to see what bottles are available and then call for the one I saw that I like best. This would not be as easy with wine, but you could inquire at a bar and see what is being poured.

I have no clue whatsoever to aim for. First I just want to know if you just order a red wine or can you order more specific? I guess they won't have a list to choose from. If I had the choice I would go for a Barolo but I'd be happy with a decent Malbec.

 

I'll go for beer or spirits in most such situations, unless I'm gypsy in the palace-ing with the degens and I can endure a Silver Oak in the Mansion Casino.

Regular bar bars have such basic offerings, bottles have been opened who knows how long, the temps often are off.

 

many of the high limit baccarat rooms at the larger hotels (e.g. Aria, Bellagio, Palazzo etc) would comp up to Veuve Clicquot champagne. usually anything beyond that would require pit-boss approval, and anything beyond Veuve is usually full bottle only (so even if you're betting $500 a hand, don't expect a casino to comp you just a glass of Dom or Krug).

Surprisingly, Wynn-Encore are the stingy ones - even a glass of Veuve require the pit boss to deduct $18 off the "comp balance"

I can verify that they have wines available out of the bar in MB's high limit table game area, I've had champagne there (which I didn't like, but I never like champagne really). As far as what exactly they offer, you'll have to ask the CW. There's also a high probability that if your average bet is sufficient you can get whatever the hell you want comped.

 

Vueve is decent Champagne and is widely available. I usually stay at Palazzo and I go to Laguna Champagne Bar for a nice glass go bubbles. I order either Dom, Krug or Gosset by the glass and bill it to room. Host comps it.

For red wine I have never seen anything decent on floor/bars. Now in high limit tables I have heard bottles of DRC, Petrus and Mouton being opened..


Not sure what MB/Mirage offers..

With any wine by the glass, one must hope for the best and be prepared to send it back. The other day, we met friends at a Macaroni Grill they like. The waiter poured something red. It may once have been wine.

 

You and Ms. M need to come out!! We have a pickup waiting at Melville. Or maybe it's Brewer-Clifton. Ahh, who cares, come on out!!

 

Anyone know the champagne situation at CET? I usually spread $600-$800 on the craps table per roll (inside #s, $100 pass w/ odds, a few hardways). Never thought to ask for champagne. Guess I could always charge it to the room.

 

Any places pour Surh Luchtel Pinot Noir? I've had it in a restaurant in LV but not sure if it's poured at any bars, vp bar or casino areas.

 

Calling out something rather boutique is needle/haystack. But we love Pinot and this isn't in our view, so what did you have?

 

Hi, Ken. Not to threadjack, but my fiancée and I will be visiting SB next month and plan to spend a day in the SYV area. Problem is we like bigger reds and was wondering if you could recommend a few wineries that might fit the bill. TIA

 

on my last three trips to Aria, I coerced the CW into fetching me some decent wine from one of the restaurant by-the-glass lists...I think it was Sage IIRC. I had scouted Sage, Jean-Georges and Julian Serrano the night before so was aware of what was available.

It helped that I walked into Sage, purchased a glass, asked the barkeep for a nice stem (the glassware is important to me) and took it to the table. As it was mid-week day shift, the BJ dealer, pit and CW were soon captivated. Of course, I had been chatting with them about wine over the course of the session so the pump had been primed. As soon as the glass emptied, the CW was offering to do a refill. I explained what the wine was (a tasty little RRV Pinot Noir...can't recall the name offhand) and were it came from. She fetched, I tipped $20 and everyone was happy. Repeated that about 4 times over the course of the afternoon.

Next trip in, they remembered me for this, so was much simpler. Only downside was that Sage hadn't updated their wine list (shame on them) so we drank the same again.

Third trip in, same story...

So, good wine can be had, but you need to do your homework, don't expect much unless its slow and tip appropriately.

 

cj, the public announcement of the end of Clos Pepe went out this week. It's written in vivid, well nigh perfect Wesspeak. I'll forward the email if you guys didn't see it.

Ernie, the adage around here is that for every mile inland the temp goes up a degree, and that's pretty damn close to being spot on most of the year, and particularly to and into harvest months. Happy Canyon AVA is about as Bordeaux as you can get here. Call ahead and arrange a tasting with Westerly. Star Lane has a tasting room paired with sister winery Dierberg located over here close to us, off the 246 on Drum Canyon Road. It's worth a trip over just for the setting and Dierberg does Burgundian well so you can get both expressions. The Ballard Canyon AVA is by Ballard and Los Olivos, and Syrah is king there, and then other Rhones. It's not as cool weather as in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA so you get more depth. Have a stab at Stolpman with tasting rooms in Los Olivos and the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Stolpman does Italian varietals well, too. Jonata and Jorian Hills are two small Ballard Canyon producers that knock it out. Not sure about getting an audience; I'll ask a bud.

So essentially, from here going to Happy Canyon, you go from Burgundy to the Rhone and Tuscany, and you conclude in Bordeaux. And within that, the north side of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA is different from the Santa Rosa Road side, etc. But it's all compact enough to tag Europe easily with no passport required, though of course these expressions are expressions not attempts at mimicry.

All these sub AVAs mentioned have websites as does SYV and SBC. The highest concentrations of tasting rooms/wineries are in Lompoc in and around the ghetto and Los Olivos.

Thanks, Ken. We'll only have a day for driving out into the area so this is a great help. She picked a place in Buellton for lunch so I will plan around that. I'm sure we will return to the area in the future (although I've said the same about most wine regions we visit and it has yet to happen other than Napa, which is where I live).
