We expect to stay 2 nights at the Palms the first week of May. Just read a posting on Trip Advisor that said a large number of people had to evacuate their room this past Thursday morning due to some type of water break. They gave the impression of a flood and claimed the Palms actually told people to go across the street and stay at the Gold Coast at 5 in the morning as the Palms had no rooms left. This could just be a disgruntled person making up a story BUT if it's true this is not the place I care to take a chance with. Can anyone give any credibility to this story? Anyone there when it happened?

Yikes...I just read that review. It seems to be backed up on Twitter by at least one other person in this tweet There are also Instagram references to it here and here and here. My favorite quote:

"Okay..the elevators are out of service so had to run down 30 flights of stairs to get to what they call "state of the art" gym. My home gym is better. Check homey in the background taking out the frustration on the gym equipment. Just got comped and off to the Bellagio". Perhaps he didn't realize that the real workout would be getting back up the stairs :) .

So between the Tripadvisor post and these, I'd say there's enough corroboration. This story is probably true. The Palms used to be my one of favorite places because their Fantasy suites and specifically the Sky Villas are probably the best high-end suites in Vegas IMO, but it's really crashed and burned in the last few years.

Pipe breaks are common in hotels, not unique to the gangsta Palms. The Fire alarm woke me up at Caesars many years ago, went out into the hallway, water was pouring through the ceiling. Some floater supposedly tried to use a sprinkler head as a coat hanger.

While lecturing I have suffered through one ceiling collapse at Bally's, two at Tropicana and one massive roof leak during a rain storm at Orleans. Only the Orleans handled the situation professionally.

Firms like ServiceMaster (no association) make their living off hotel water issues. They can be caused by broken pipes but more frequently caused by busted sprinkler heads (probably not the Palms, it would have tripped the fire alarm), over flowed spas and hot tubs (drunk trust fund kids are so much fun, aren't they?), busted sewage lines (ya gotta love low bid construction jobs) or rotted internal roof drains (wasn't raining I bet and the Palms isn't the Flamingo).

Getting the water out is the challenge. Fortunately Vegas is dry so it evaporates pretty quickly. If not, mold quickly grows...

Many, many reasons to not stay or play at the Palms for this guy. A pipe break isn't one of them though.

I'm staying 2 nights at Cosmo and 3 at Palms in May. Palms has become one of my favourite places to stay with excellent customer service, good comps, good dining and I really like the new Ivory Tower suites. I trust everything will be taken care of by the time I stay. I've never had a water issue at Palms. If the hotel was full and this occurred in the middle of the night, early morning...it seems reasonable that Palms would move guests to Gold Coast due to the location.

As you can see by my countdown timer I'm leaving today and staying at the Palms so I perked right up when I read the original post!
I just got off the phone with them and the reservations agent said that flood was in the Ivory Tower a couple of days ago. We're booked into the Palms Place so apparently "this won't affect us". (Hope not.)
And I'd like to add to the positive things Breanna61 said about the Palms...I also love staying there. The staff are friendly, the rooms are clean and modern, they offer a wide range of dining choices (esp Simons), the pool is awesome and deep enough to actually swim in, the shuttle service to the Strip is convenient and the comps are good. They try really hard to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable! After countless stays on the Strip, Downtown and off-Strip I really feel that I've found the best of both worlds at the Palms.

Enjoy your trip! I am booked comped in Ivory Tower. I'll check with the hotel is a week or so to see if everything will be ok for my stay or if I should switch over to Palms Place.

I was actually in the Ivory Tower during said incident. We woke around 6am, still being on East Coast time. No water in the bathroom. Hmm. Called the front desk and they explained that a water main broke and water was cascading down the elevator shaft, so the elevators were also out. We were not happy, but the desk said we could drink the mini bar water no charge (of course I had to emphasize this at check out). I would say we had water within 1 hour of the call, and after everyone was ready to go, I called again about the elevators. The guest elevators were still out but we were allowed to use the service elevators. Security was there when we got to the casino floor, and they had coffee, water and pastries out for all the pissed off guests. Elevators seemed wonky the rest of the day, but not out of service.

I suppose if I had been there on business and this all somehow impacted me in a major way I would have cared, but to be honest, I got a great rate with them, and I get in enough random fights during my day to day life, so I wasn't looking for one while on vacation. I mean, stuff happens. Obviously I hope they send me a little "we're sorry here's a free night" or whatever, but it would have been more work to make a stink about it, for me anyway.

Thanks for the inside info. We'll keep our 2 night reservation for early May but if given the Ivory Tower will be sure to ask if the room was involved in that incident.

Stay where you are. This is my biz, and trust me, in these older properties, 90s give way like crazy. But the crews have a way of getting in there, repairing the leak, and drying out fhe room; ozone machine to clsar out rhe smell, and replace any damaged ffurniture.

Crap happens. If you own a business that never had an emergency situation that caused discomfort to your guests or customers, you are one luck b@st@rd.

I was there as well. No water for a few hours was a minor inconvenience and the elevator thing was kind of a pain briefly that morning. I also didn't make a big deal out of it but I heard it was pretty bad for guests trying to check in that night... The other inconvenience was that they were replacing carpets in the casino floor last week. Did sections at a time so they had a lot of machines not working and the noise when they were scraping up the old carpet was pretty bad. Looks like they finished that up Friday morning though so shouldn't be a problem in the future. I was on a comped stay and the VP machines at the bars were being good to us so we never complained...

Thanks for the update carolineno. As often happens, it appears the Trip Advisor reviewer really blew things out of proportion.

Some people take it as a personal insult when something like this happens, as if it was done just to piss off and inconvenience them.

I really should have reported this while we were there, but we were having to much fun. So when we first pulled up to The Palms, there was this semi parked in front with the words "Disaster Response" on the side of the trailer.

I also noticed some kind of generator run portable ventilation system set up outside.

I asked the front desk clerk about the incident. She was a little surprised that we knew about it and asked “How did you hear about the break?” I explained that I had heard about it on this forum. She said it started on the 17th floor and the 16th, 15th and 14th took the brunt of the damage. She said that they were currently not putting anyone on 17 or below. After we checked in on the 30th floor, went down to the Casino floor, taking a stop on the 16th. I stuck my head out and snapped a picture. I probably could have walked further, but I didn't want to cross a line.

Carpeting, drywall, wallpaper, all being replaced. I am sure that there was much more going on that was not discussed. We also witnessed no less than 50 portable dryers sitting outside waiting to be packed back up. On Thursday we were riding down the elevator from the 30th floor where we were staying and it stopped at the 16th floor. Two Palms workers got on and rode the rest of the way down. They told us everything should be completed that day and ready to rent rooms again.
