I love to drive out into the desert and get off the strip for awhile. I've always wanted to check out one of the ghost towns you hear about but not wanting to burn an entire day trying to find it or get to it. So I'm looking for some advice....

I think I'm looking for genuine ghost town or abandoned town versus something that has been commercialized and turned into a tourist trap with campy shows or crowds. Does that make sense?

Have you ever driven off into a ghost town and checked it out? I'd love to hear your thoughts and advice on something within 2 hour drive of the Strip that might be interesting to check out. Also any other creepy and unique things we may find out in the desert.

This is something I've been thinking about as well. We're heading to Death Valley one day and would enjoy a ghost town or two.

I know this is a bit off the reservation as it is nowhere near Vegas, but you want a ghost town, get to Bodie some time. There's not another like it around. It's a California State Park northeast of Mono Lake, southwest of Hawthorne, Nevada.

Wow, that looks great. But it really is in the middle of nowhere.

It truly is in the middle of nowhere, though also in the middle of and a gateway too some of America's most stunning natural places. It certainly isn't a Vegas day-trip, but folks who've done Vegas a bazillion times might want to consider a different trip west some time and do a road trip. Bodie, Death Valley, Mammoth and the Sierra, Mono, Tahoe and Reno, back down to Sin ... And the 395 is one of THE great drives, right up there with the 1, Utah 12, A1A down to the Keys, etc.

I guess the closest to Vegas has to be Calico for the touristy kind and Rhyolite for the less touristy kind.

Bodie is spectacular, but not exactly close to anywhere but Mono Lake.

How far a drive would you guess Calico and Rhyolite are? Are you able to get out of your vehicle and explore yourself or are you stuck in 'guided' exploring?

Rhyolite is the best preserved true ghost town that I've seen. It's worth the drive.

It's just east of Beatty, probably 2 hours or so from Las Vegas.

Here are a couple of shots:

On the way up, just before you hit Beatty, there's a ghost-factory, a long-abandoned cement plant, which is worth the drive to see the ruins of.

We went to Nelson this year- was fun it certainly felt in the middle of nowhere - there is a mine tour you can take otherwise just lots of picture opportunities SAM_1589.jpg SAM_1592.jpg

Looks really cool. Are there a lot of people around? Or are you mostly alone?

It was a group of us and the caretaker. Not many people at all. There was a cat there too. :)

We stopped at Rhyolite last Tuesday on the way to Death Valley. It was very cool. No caretaker there. The bottle house is great. There are several buildings. There were maybe 3-4 other cars there.
