Just curious, how long will you stay at a machine that doesn't pay? My rule is usually 5 spins. If I don't get anything, I walk. Just wondered if anyone had any strategies as well :)

    Thanks!

Not paying at all, or not paying well? I'm usually playing some multi line video slot, so not getting anything in 5 spins would be a rarity. Still, I typically commit playing whatever bill I've put in there.

I'll usually burn through $100 before giving up but that's on max bet anywhere from $1.50-$8. If I'm having a bad run, I'll drop it down to $50.

I usually just park myself at a bartop VP machine and just keep feeding and hope that winner is the next hand.

Depends on my mood and the machine. I really like 88 Fortunes and Wicked Winnings so if playing either of them I've sat at a loosing machine for hours and a few thousand into it. The most I've lost before giving up on either is 2K. Most times by that time it starts giving me back some to play on.

If its a machine I'm not real familiar with or not crazy about then maybe $100

I am like Casinoqueen, if it's a machine I enjoy playing (Buffalo, Quick Hits) I tend to sit for hours and keep on donating hoping for that hit.

If it's a machine I've played before, then $20. If it's new to me, usually less.

one bill ($20, maybe $50), then I'm gone

...although last trip I, in an almost comatose drunken state, dropped maybe $800 in some sort of weird arcade-style hunting slot at Bellagio when I couldn't find a craps table at 5 am.

    good times.

On a quarter machine I'll play a 20 through it and then walk. If it's a dollar machine I put a hundy in it and play it down to 50 before I walk.

If I try another dollar machine I put another hundy in. I save all the 50 dollar TITO's at the end of the session and it makes me feel better that I have something back from the session. Makes you think you didn't lose as much when actually it's the same either way. I just like to do it this way.

But I hardly play machines anymore. I play craps 90% of the time. When I play craps I have the "go big or go home" mentality. Total degenerate...

Seems like the guys I know who are huge gamblers typically put $20 into a quarter VP machine and play it out. They may or may not feed it again. To me that's not enough for high variance games like DDB. I put in $100, and like a few of you have said, play it to $50 if nothing's happening but keep going if there are good runs mixed in.

Not to hijack the thread, but how about another perspective too? If you're up, at what point do you cash out and move on or start again? My wife will cash out for a few bucks and start again. I usually try to be up at least 50% before cashing and putting in a fresh bill.

For the penny machine I have a low tolerance as I feel they should be paying back even something small every few spins.
I have a higher tolerance for the $1 machines.

I usually plan on giving a slot $5 to look promising with a $20 max. It depends on the minimum bet and the volatility.

I will usually start with a $20 (playing 50c-$1 a spin). If I get a few mediocre wins and the machine is teasing me with the bonus enough, I'll put in another $20. If I've not got the bonus by this stage or a decent enough win on that then I'll move on.

That said, I've been known to do a hundy in 10 minutes....:rolleyes2:

I play in $20 increments. If the machine is "warm" and I'm getting good hits, I stay. If I get zilch on that $20, I move on.

It's REALLY discouraging to sit down at a machine and have NOTHING for the first several spins!

My tolerance is sort of between 5 and 10 spins.

My answer really depends on the cocktail service. If I get a beverage during the first $20 I am much more likely to put in more $20's. Joe's answer is looking better and better...

If I put in a $20 or $100, and I get to $200 or above, I cash out and put in another bill and play for awhile before I decide to hang in there or move on... Like you, I still have a ticket to make me feel I'm not a complete loser.

If no decent hits at the end of $20 on pennies or at $50 on a dollar machine, I move on. Occasionally I 'walk a hundred', give it 3-4 spins then on to the next machine until I find one that 'speaks' to me before settling in...

Sometimes I dig in on a machine that is paying ZERO cause I'm stubborn - bad strategy, yes, but that's the bulldog in me.....and I pay the price:grrr:

I will put a $20 bill in a machine and see what happens. If it is going badly, I will cash out at $10. Most of the time I play the entire bill through.

You will get the same expected return staying at one machine as someone hopping around. So in the end do whatever makes you happy since it doesnt really matter.

I'm not much of a machine hopper. I'm a patient person. Usually what prompts me to get up and move is what is going on around me. If I get some loud, obnoxious person who smells like 2 week old cheese that sits down next to me... I'll probably be moving along quickly. Otherwise I will usually go through $75 of a Hundo before ever thinking about moving.
