Hey all! Broke up with the GF couple weeks ago so what better time than to book a guys trip to vegas! I will be staying at the D first week of June.. Got a good package price we all jumped on.. 450 each for five nights at the D nonstop air included from Newark NJ..

I'm reading some pretty bad stories about the elevators there, but from what I'm hearing they are installing two more? Any idea at all if these will be complete by my stay?

I would book an alternative as well. You can keep reading reviews of the D up until June and/or call them and then cancel the hotel you don't want. I'm coming to Vegas this month and booked the D but cancelled due to constant complaints about the elevators. I also booked and cancelled the Linq due to construction noise.

In all my stays at the D I have never had an issue with the elevators, before and after the new floor selection method. Maybe I'm just lucky, although I wish some of that would transfer to my time in the VP machines!

I stayed at the D during Super Bowl weekend and did not have any problems - only had to go down the stairs a couple of times due to elevator was too full to fit another 3 people in. Of course this was on Super Bowl Sunday. No other times was it a problem and didn't have to wait too long. They were just starting to put in the other 2 elevators.

I was there a few weekends ago. Like the OP, others' reviews of the elevators made me nervous but it really wasn't that bad. It was very busy that weekend but I don't think I waited more than a minute for an elevator - up or down. I'm staying there again in two weeks so the elevators weren't bad enough to keep me away.

Great. So basically its not a big deal at all. Are there specific rooms on certain floors I should request? I'm not worried about noise... View.. Quick access to elevator would be most important to me. Or does it not even matter.

It doesn't matter. The walk to the end rooms is relatively short. I stayed at an end room at the Mirage. Talk about a loooonnnnggg walk. I told my host that's what kept me out of the casino.

I've always felt like the people who complain about the elevators just aren't used to large buildings. I've always worked in a downtown environment and the wait for the elevators at the D has never been worse than a standard downtown building. I've stayed at the D 5 times spanning the last 4 years so this is not just a one time thing.

I've seen many reports of 10-20 minute waits. That's unacceptable, IMO.

I completely agree if that is true. I typically disregard extremely positive and extremely negative comments in reviews to get a better feel for what a normal experience might be. I'm not saying it has never happened to anyone at one specific point in time. I've had a terrible one time experience at my favorite restaurant but that doesn't keep me from going back.

Candy.. There is nothing I can do this was booked as part of a hotels.com package, that's how I got the deal I did. It should be okay. Even if you consider a few minute wait for an elevator.. as soon as you get off you are right in the middle of all the action and everything is such a short walking distance unlike the strip where I spent my last 4 trips.. This is actually my first stay downtown, I might as well seeing as how most nights I would end up going downtown anyway.

So people wait outside the elevator with a stop watch timing it?

    Highly doubtful.

What happens is people dont know how to use the thing. They are used to just pushing the button and getting on.

These work a bit different in that you enter your floor and then get on the one that come for that floor.

This extra bit of thinking confusing people because one came for a different floor first and they had to wait an extra minute for theirs.

Now it turns into they had to wait 15 minutes for an elevator that took them to the wrong floor.

Try an experiment for yourself, you can really do this anywhere. Pick a line in the store and say out loud how long the line is. You will notice that everyone will join in on complaining. People naturally want to belong to a group so they will feel left out if they dont complain right along with you.

So in the elevators case, it takes one person who doesnt understand it to ruin a whole lobbys worth of reviews.

I have been at 'theD'...and I've been at Imperial Palace.

The elevators at 'theD' are LIGHTNING fast compared to IP.

I think the longest I had to wait was about 2 minutes at the D... and that was in the morning, around 9. Typical wait time was less than a minute.

The IP, on the other hand - longest I ever actually waited was 7 minutes...and yes, I actually timed it. It might actually have been longer - I'll never know, as I decided to take the stairs down from the 9th floor.

I would not worry about staying at 'theD'.

Cousin Eddie, some people do like to time things.

I like to notice how long it takes to get our food at a restaurant, etc.

Of course that's unacceptable, but we can't believe everything we read on the internet.
I've stayed at the D (Fitzgeralds) about 25 times in the last 10 years. Of those 25 times, I can think of 3 times where I had an issue with the elevators. of those three times, I never waited 15 minutes for an elevator. It might have been 5 minutes, but of course someone who wants to complain will exaggerate that into 15 or 20. I don't think 5 mins is an acceptable wait time, and I wouldn't want to wait 5 mins or more each time, but again, 3 times of extended waiting for countless trips on the elevator is not an issue for me.
One time I was on the 6th floor so I just took the stairs.
In summary - the D is typically my go to place while downtown. The elevators don't scare me.

Excellent point. once you hit the casino floor you have so many options available to you just a short walk away. Stay at the D, live it up w/ your buds, and don't sweat the elevator "issue".
just avoid rush hour on the elevators :)

Once you get on the elevator, hold your desired floor button and the door close button at the same time. watch how fast you get to your desired stop with no interruptions

Unfortunately, that doesn't work with The D elevators as there are no floor number buttons once inside the elevator. You push your floor number on the outside of the elevator bank, the panel tells you which elevator to get on (A, B, C, or D), you hop on he designated elevator and the elevator then stops at your floor. It is kind of a unique system.

I liked the new elevator system, but I am never there on a weekend.
I especially liked the ability to skip the first floor noise when coming home. I could take the escalator to the second floor and then go to catch the elevator.
Same thing when having breakfast at the café. I liked going just to floor 2 and getting off there for the café. And since I gamble on the second floor, that was convenient.
However, I never had any of the long waits mentioned.
