    My Trip Report

Thursday after work I decided to make the two hour fifteen minute trip to Mohegan Sun (MS) Connecticut to feed the Blackjack demon that lives inside of me. I had been there twice earlier this year and have been fortunate to come back winners on both trips. For those of you that don't know about MS BJ, table rules are pretty good - 6 deck shoe, dealer stands on soft 17, split up to four times (except Aces), double any two cards and surrender is available. On the negative, penetration SUCKS, they only go about 4 decks deep. Though I have played here during the week or morning hours and I have seen shoes cut almost to five decks.

I arrived as MS around 8:30pm, walked around to soak everything in and to find a table to play at. For a Thursday evening I was amazed how busy the casino was, there were a lot of tables open, tables of all sorts of card games and all the tables were busy. Most table games in the main areas (as opposed to the high limit areas - MS has three HL areas that I know of) had $10-15 minimum. After walking around for 15-20 minutes, I sat at a $15 BJ table in the non smoking section of the casino and bought in for $300. Most of the other players were friendly, and knew basic strategy (BS) pretty well. There were certain times where a player weren't sure how to play certain hands and they asked the table for help. There was one player that consistently stood on H16 if the dealers whole card was 2-A, but aside from that, BS was pretty much followed by everyone. Some people came and went with varying degrees of BS knowledge, most didn't last to long and sure enough when they did leave the table, the rest of us would talk about their "bad play" and how they "hurt the table" on certain hands. I played for about 90 minutes, spread my bets between $15-50, went up and down and eventually colored in with a loss of $50.

I walked around a bit more, did some people watching, and was looking for another table to play before I called it a night. I decided to play in an enclosed pit where there are a variety of table games, all with a $50 minimum bet. I figured I was planning to leave around midnight, so let me go big and see how I do.
I found an empty table that was just starting to hand shuffle the shoe - I sat down at 3B, and soon after a woman took 1B and grumpy old man (GOM) took 2B - you will soon see why he earned the nickname GOM. 1B bought in for $500 - all greens, GOM bought in for $2K - took it all in black chips and I bought in for $1k - 7 black and 10 green and 10 red. The first shoe was a death sentence, 1B was flat betting $50 and lost everything before the shoe was finished. She bought in for another $500 and hemorrhaged some more. She sat out the last 10 or so hands of the shoe and I couldn't blame her. GOM was getting angry that he lost the first four hands, plus he didn't like how I was playing. Third or fourth hand in, I had a 12 v dealer 3, so I took a hit, Before the dealer delivered my card, 2B screamed at me WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!??? YOU DONT HIT A 12 VS 3!!!! With that, dealer delivers me a ten and I bust. I told GOM calmly that last time I checked BS you hit 12 vs 3 so this is how I am going to play my cards, he insisted I was wrong. Dealer turned over a ten then took a 6 for a 19, which beat whatever GOM had. So I was on his Sh!t list from here on. A few hands later, 2B is down about 600, I get a 16 vs dealer ten. I surrender and hear GOM mumbling something about wrong move, need to take a hit for the table.... Dealer turns over a 5 and takes a third card which was a 6 - that beat whatever 2B had. At this point, 2B slammed his fist on the table, gave me the look of death as he collected his chips and stomped off to ruin someone else's evening. After the end of the first shoe, 1B is down about $800, 2B is at a new table probably talking about the idiot he was just playing with (me) and I was down $900, had one black chip left. If I lost it, I was heading home.

A new dealer came in to start the shuffle of the next shoe, as he was shuffling a woman sat at the empty 2B position and bought in for $350. This was the beginning of the sickest run I ever had in my 5 years of playing BJ. First few hands I was flat betting $100 and slowly building my way back to my original buy in. The shoe got better and better for me, every card fell in my favor. It was raining blackjacks for me, all doubles went my way. I kept pressing my bets and my stack of blacks slowly started to build into some purples. One memorable hand, I has bet $350 and was dealt a pair of 7's vs dealer 5. I split the sevens and was dealt another 7. First 7 I received a 6, second 7 I received an 8, third 7 I got another 7. Still on third 7, I was dealt a 10 and final 7 I was dealt a 4, doubled and got a 9. So I now have $1,750 bet on the table, and my cards equal, 13, 15, 17 and 20 and if I lose all I will have left is about $ 400. Dealer shoes has a 10 and busts when he pulls an 8. My biggest one hand payoff ever. A few hands later I bet $750 and dealer give me a 3 and a 2, vs his ten. I hit FOUR times and all I have to show for is a hard 16. I just know if I hit again a ten will show its ugly face, but I bite my tongue and hit anyway and pull a 6. I cant ever remember seeing a seven card 21. At this point the pitboss is paying attention to my growing stack of chips and comments on my 7 card 21. My 21 beat the dealer 20, another $750 payday. This incredible win streak went on for 2 shoes, woman at 1B & 2B were starting to comment on my insane win streak. I never play the sucker side bets, but I guess I was getting a lot of dealer matches, so 2B asked if she can play my dealer match circle. Dealer said it was OK so long as I put the money in the circle. 2B ended up doing OK herself with my dealer matches.

Last memorable hand, I ha bet $500 and was dealt a pair of Aces. I split and was dealt a pair of 2's, one for each Ace. I had this going on against a dealer ten. I was sure I was going to lose this hand. sure enough, dealer flips over a 6, then buses with a ten. By the end of the second shoe that started my win streak, I decided to color. I had made my buy in back plus an additional $8,625 - biggest win of my life. i was smiling ear to ear for the entire car ride home.

I got home around 3:30, in bed by 4am. Alarm went off at 6am as I had to get my kids up for school. As my wife got ready, she asked how it went last night, I told her I won "8625". She asked $86.25 in a "you drove over five hours round trip last night, only got 2 hours of sleep to win nothing" tone"? I told her no, $8,625 and I pulled out a stack of $100, I had to fan them out to show her they were all hundreds. I also told her I was going to call my boss to quit so I can become a professional Blackjack player.

OK, so I knew better not to quit, but I did put a deposit down for a family cruise this summer.

    Thanks Mohegan Sun.

Great luck! Great details on the gambling, and I know you meant to say you pulled a 5 on your hard 16, not a 6. Thanks for sharing!

Yes PayTriple, you are right, I pulled a 5 on my 16, not a 6. I guess I am still suffering from lack of sleep.

Good win at the Sun... go there a couple times a month... do you like the original casino or the new planet of the earth? i'm torn between them as i had various degrees of success at both..though i did get really lucky in the original once ;)

I try to make a pilgrimage to Mohegan once every six weeks. There is something about the ambiance of the Casino of the Earth that appeals to me. I find myself in there often then none, probably about 60% of the time I can be found here. The rest of my time I'm usually in the Casino of the Sky - non smoking area or the tables right outside the convention area.

"You need to take a hit for the table" has to be one of the dumbest things I've heard someone say. I didn't know I owed strangers who give me nothing a hit, or anything for that matter. Awesome win, glad you showed that guy.

Really fun story! Congrats! And ballsy play as hell.

I'm kind of surprised that someone would want to bet your sucker bet circle - I would never in a million years risk fucking with somebody on such a streak in any way shape or form.
