Hey guys - need your help in explaining how my comp situation worked out on this last trip:

    Property: Aria
    Hours Played: 31
    Avg Bet: $108
    Game: Blackjack
    Tier Points Earned: 59,000
    Primary Comps Issued: $100
    Express Comps Used: $79
    Express Comps Remaining: $11

this was my first time using the host services; previously I always used the mLife desk.
I feel a little under comped based on the avg bet/hours played

What are your thoughts, and can you help me to understand better?

    Thanks!

P.S. - we came in on a mailer promotion that equaled 2night comp room and $100 resort credit...would that have an influence on the above?

yes, your 2 night room comp and $100 resort credit come off the top before any extra comps.

you earned about $715 in comps, $90 being ECs.

so did you get an extra $100 in primary comps plus the $100 resort credit?

if so, you got just about what you should.

2 nights in a regular room is only about $400 in comps, plus the $100 and $100 and $79.

now this is interesting, because from what you have explained it sounds to me as if we did not receive the comp earned on this trip. Let me explain my thinking on that:

We stayed for 3 nights, 2 of which were on a mailer (promo) comp that included $100 resort credit. The additional room night was billed at $99

You say we earned approx $715 in comp from our play including $90 EC, yes?

At the end of stay, I received $179 total comp applied towards our ~$735 bill which was: 1 x $99 room night and the balance F&B/Retail charged to the room.
It seems to me I should have ~$700 comp available to apply towards that total, no?

In addition, shouldn't my tier credits be bit higher than 59k based on the numbers supplied above?

I'm curious too. I explained this morning about my checkout at Monte Carlo today. I stayed 13 nights, the first three were comped, $250 free play and $200 resort credit. My bill this morning was over $1800 but after adding 260,000 tier credits and contacting a host my net bill is $421. To top it all off I just reconfirmed they didn't touch my $570 in express comps.

I can't balance a checkbook (but differential equations are a breeze!) and I certainly can't understand comps!

No like I said the 2 nights comped up from comes out of that. And the $99 casino rate on the third night. So that's $500 of your comps right there.

As far as the TCs, I calculated the comps based on the TCs. It's about 33 TCs per dollar theo.

Overall you were slightly undercomped, but within normal range.

so the promo mailer did have an impact...interesting. This was my first time to use such.
I thought the entire $700 comp would be available against our charges AFTER the mailer promo was applied

    Nope.

Have to play off the upfront comp before any additional comps are applied.

Wow - this is interesting. I am used to CET comps and using total reward credits.

So Shifter- what would have happened if cjlangston had took advantage of the 2 night comp with $100 resort credit and only played a little (not enough to cover room comps and $100 resort credit). If he had not stayed the 3rd night at $99 and only used the comps on the mailer - would he still have been charged?

yeah, but if you significantly underplay, future offers can be lowered a lot and/or disappear.

Thanks all....now that I understand this better I can set my expectations accordingly. I'm hopeful the next offer will have a little sweetener to it given level of play on the recent trip (and losses)

One thing I noticed is you said part of your room charges were from retail. Was this gift shop retail? If I remember correctly, resort credit does not apply to gift shop charges. Also, any tax and tip you room charged would not be covered by resort credit either.

Hmm, quick question on the expectation for level of play. Do they change expectation per weekend as the value of the room changes? Basically, since the rack rate of the room is significantly higher during some weeks/weekends does that change your expectation levels for a slow week vs a busy week?

Reason I am asking is because I took advantage of a 2 night comp (one bedroom terrace) at Cosmo last October (No FP, MP, or F&B) and added 2 nights comp from Gold status last October and didn't think my play was sufficient to carry the comp yet I later managed to get 4 night comp mailers + $100 casino chips (which is peanuts, obviously) for Jan-Mar and eventually Apr-June. I assumed because it wasn't a busy weekend (low-ish rates) so they were happy for any business.

I have now booked one of the 4 night offers for the first weekend in May but because it sold out will that affect the expected level of play because the rate went up significantly then sold out after I booked?

Two things: (1) generally they won't even let you redeem an offer for a truly busy night, one that they think isn't justified by your ADT; (2) it all comes back to ADT vs Cost.

Obviously they'll be happier if you stay during a slow weekend -- and be more likely to give you extra comps when you check out. If they give you a busy night free, it's because they expect that your ADT justifies it. Further, they're not offering exactly what your play justifies; they want some wiggle room, plus some protection against getting stiffed.

Room comps are an odd thing. Rack rate might be $250, but the marginal cost of the room is a few hours of a maid's time. If it was gonna be empty anyway, they'll gladly trade you one ADT for a room on a slow night. Plus, they're expecting your 4-night stay will include an expensive Friday and Saturday but then (e.g.) a very cheap Sunday and Monday.

If your ATT stays the same but your ADT goes down, then they're going to downshift the offers, mostly by limiting the weekends you'll be able to book, or "pay for one night, get 3 free". 15k TC/day is roughly where I'd put free nights at Aria (actually I would have guessed 20k), but I haven't stayed there -- so you should still be getting offers.

Does your play at sister establishments at MGM mean stiffing the home casino, where you received the upfront comp from?

I am using 4 nights comp at Luxor my next trip, but I prefer to play at other, nicer MGM resorts. Will this be a problem for my upfront comps and potentially resort fee, room charges getting waived?

If you are booking a corporate offer then playing at other MGM properties won't effect it at all. If you book directly through a host then you'll want to give the host plenty of action at that property but if you play at MGM properties then it all counts towards your trip.

Appreciate the feedback! Looks like I'll have some work cut out for me to maintain the offers..
