you're likely better off changing it before leaving

Yeah. I'd use a bank. Casinos and airports take a few extra cents per dollar from what I've seen.

Also, if you travel to the US frequently or make online purchases in the US, I'd get a US$ Visa card. The spread on foreign exchange with credit cards is much worse than a bank. If you buy and return on a Canadian $$ credit card, you'll probably loose 500+ basis points in the dollar spread.
example: You make a purchase for $100 US on your visa. With the fx, your cost is $130. If you return the same item, Visa will credit you back $124.

I know my US Amex no longer charges a foreign transaction fee (additional percent or 2 in addition to exchange) but I'm a US resident now. Not sure if it works the same for cad Amex being used in the US.

You may also want to look into getting a checking account with a Canadian bank. Some will reimburse ATM fees on those when used in the US. You can also buy USD over time and leave it in the account to take advantage of fluctuations in currency conversion.

I would suggest you get an account with TD bank...they have accounts for Canadians as well as Americans who travel across the border frequently. Sine TD has banks both in Canada and the U.S. you can access your money on both sides of the border.

I haven't found any TD banks in Nevada. Their emphasis is the east coast, especially Florida from what I've seen.

Yeah not sure TD has any locations in Las Vegas but someone may be better off even if you have to pay the ATM fees. Not sure if this is still the case but The Bank Of Nevada used to have some of the lowest ATM fees.
