We're a late 30's early 40's group and want to do something different and stay really off-Strip. I've done Rio and Palms, but this trip I'm thinking like Red Rocks, JW Marriott, Aliante, M Resort or something like that.
Any good recommendations recent experiences to share?

We've been staying off strip for a couple visits now. We always rent a car, so off strip is no problem for us. Our choice is the Red Rock Resort. The rooms are very nice and, to us, are just a small step below what we experienced at Encore / Wynn. We also head out to visit M Resort each trip as we enjoy the casino and especially the buffet there. Stopped at Aliante a few trips back and were not overly impressed, it is also way out there. We've never stayed at the JW Marriott, but the casino was small and not particularly fun for us.

we've wanted to try the M Resort rooms but have never been able to work a good price from them. Red Rock is our choice. It has a nice large gaming floor with low minimums and better player odds than the strip or downtown. M is similar in the casino as both seem to cater to locals. Again, we like the rooms at Red Rock. They are very contemporary and spacious. If you stay there ask for a room near the elevators if available. It can be a very long walk from the other end of the hall. The pool area is also very nice.

Of those you've mentioned, I place my vote for Red Rock. It's a beautiful property in a very nice part of town. The M's a nice joint too, but not to the level Red Rock is... IMHO.

Double down on what suggested by big dan plus.......I think better food options at the rock and couple casinos close by - rampart and suncoast. M is fine but edge to the rock. Also, both have very good VP. Been and stayed at both several times, hard to go wrong here.

As someone mentioned already, try for room close to elevators at red rock. Those long walks (at least they feel that why after many beverages) at 3 AM are not fun. have a great time

If you can afford it, my suggestion would be the Green Valley Ranch. The casino and the surrounding area has everything you can ask for. Great pool, theatre inside casino, high end shopping mall ( for the women) yards from the casino, the best buffet in Vegas for the price ( get a Players card free and meals are discounted), good drinks service if you're playing. Problem is the room rates are not cheap AND the resort fee runs about $25 a night.

You also can't go wrong at the South Point or the Suncoast. They were both developed as Coast casinos and both casinos look more or less identical from the inside. Rooms at both are very nice and big, and lots of good reasonably priced restaurant options. I think the Suncoast is a 3.5 star and the South Point is a 4 star. I strongly recommend the matzo ball soup at the Del Mar deli at the South Point, and if you are into the spa, I thought the Spa at the South Point was nicer than the Bellagio's.

I've never stayed at the JW Marriott but the restaurants there at the Rampart casino have some good deals.

I agree the M while nice is all by itself with the next closest casino Southpoint a couple miles away. Redrock has shopping near by Suncoast and Rampart also and all the Summerlin restaurants and shopping. Rampart is a fun small casino with good games. It might be too small for a group stay however.

I was unimpressed by Aliante might be fine for locals in the area but not as a destination.

Red Rock is great, it can be pricey though depending on when you'll be there. I also like GVR.

I like RED Rock, alot. Huge casino, and very NICE rooms. Request Pool/Red rock mountain View.

Second, M. Request Strip/pool view. M is geared more towards locals, but nice buffet. Spa/salon, Quiet, almost desolate.

Stayed at both many times. Both nice, safe, newer.
    Both recommend car, Rental car.
Trying to do without, is mission impossible.

We have stayed at Sam's Town, and Sunset Station. Both great value, fun places. My wife likes Sam's because the cocktail waitresses serve real champagne and orange juice while you're playing slots.........
