Hi everyone! I've been staying at the Nugget Gold Tower for the past 10 years. It's been the perfect spot for our girl trips and I've had comp rooms in the past. We are again staying at the Nugget for our upcoming trip (leaving this Saturday) but room is not comped since I don't gamble as much there (we spend at least a day away from downtown now). Next trip is scheduled for 10/31 and this one is with my husband. We want a nice room with a good bed (he has a bad spine) and good proximity to Fremont Street (less walking and easier for him to rest in the room). Many of the hotels have suites for almost the same price as the Nugget Tower rooms. Years ago we stayed in a suite at 4 Queens in the North Tower. Location was PERFECT and room nice. But would those rooms now be old and tired? What suggestions would you have for me to check out?

Thanks for all the GREAT information on this site!

Although I haven't stayed in one (yet), a suite at Golden Gate would be very reasonable & based on photos I've seen, very nice. The regular room beds at Golden Gate are QUITE comfortable!
I suspect it would be pretty easy to get the suite comped as well.

    Just a thought.

For my next stay downtown, that's my plan.

Haven't stayed in the suites at 4Q, but the regular rooms are okay, just nothing special. They certainly won't remind you of any rooms at the GN, regardless of which tower you stay in. They are on the small side. The plus side is that you will be close to the casino and to Freemont St even if you get the South Tower. Unlike the Carson Tower at the GN, which is a hike by downtown standards.

I like the rooms and pool area at Downtown Grand.
Here are some pictures of a standard room. It's only a one block walk from Fremont to DTG. OK, 1.5 to get to the hotel elevators.

The Suite at the D is excellent, but there are limitations (only one bathroom and access is through the master bedroom) and the elevators might frustrate you.

That is Halloween night, so it will be packed and probably few discounts available.

The Jr. suite (what their calling the King room at the end of the hall with a pull out sofa) is adequate as well.

I too like the DTG rooms as well as GG suites. I stay at the D on a frequent basis but I wouldn't stay there with my spouse. I think it's fine for a guy trip but nothing more. just personal opinion.
getting comps on Halloween will be tough. I'm staying @ GG suite in a few weeks but they wouldn't comp my fourth night (Friday) because of the Mayweather vs Pacquaio fight. No casino rate either. I suspect Halloween to be no different as it's so popular down there.

Hey Sue. You might want to try the D Hotel since it is very new. If you and your husband are planning to have a romantic dinner, I would suggest going to Hugo's Cellar. Oscar's Steakhouse also offers a beautiful view of Freemont Street for those who appreciate fine dining.

Oscar's now features an amazing view of the back of the zip line platform. A friend recommends the food. We ate at Binion's Steakhouse and were unimpressed for the price.

As for rooms, just stayed at DTG and the rooms were nice because they are shiny and new. Four Queens rooms are kind of dumpy and their corner suites are nicer and dumpy. I loved the old tower rooms at El Cor, spacious and well furnished, but the size of the bathroom kills the deal when I am not solo.

because it's never offered comped, and I don't pay for rooms in vegas unless I absolutely have too for some silly reason :)
RE: Mayweather vs Pacquaio fight - I just adjusted my trip because I couldn't find a free room in town for May 1, and the downtown offerings were all north of $300 for that one night. hotel prices are crazy for that weekend.

If Oscar's is that restaurant at the Plaza under the dome that overlooks Freemont, I had the same feeling about it that you did about Binion's. Fairly ordinary food at a higher than necessary price. And if the view is obstructed, that makes it even worse.

View from Oscar's as of Feb.
The food was just OK and pretty pricey. I think Redwood at Cal and Second St at Fremont are better and more reasonably priced.

I just returned from Vegas yesterday (4 of the nights downtown). Over the past few years, I have stayed at every property downtown except the Plaza, GG, and LVC (though I have been in the room of the two latter). After the GN Rush rooms, I would put the standard rooms at the Downtown Grand my next choice. (I cannot give any info on any suites). I would put the Boyd's properties next (MSS/Cal/Fremont) - all about the same quality, but MSS and Cal larger. D rooms, then ElCo tower rooms next, followed 4Q's. Finally GG (very small) then LVC. From the TA photo's/reviews of the Plaza rooms, I would put it either just below or just above the El Co rooms.

I have stayed at the GN four times (Rush 2X, Gold 1X, Carson 1X), Fremont three times, El Co twice, Fitz/D twice (once before / once after the name change), DT Grand twice, Cal once, MSS once, and 4Q's twice.

Cant' speak in terms of suites, but here are my rankings of standard downtown rooms circa 2015:

    1. Golden Nugget
    2. The Downtown Grand
    3. The Plaza
    4. The D
    5. The California (West Tower)
    6. Main Street Station
    7. El Cortez (Tower)
    8. Golden Gate
    9. Fremont
    10. Four Queens

Rush Tower GN rooms would rank #1, but they are not the regular GN Standard. El Cortez Suites are nice, and a good value. The new Golden Gate suite tower rooms are also nice and worth considering.

Thanks so much for the great info/suggestions. Based on your responses I had pretty much decided to focus gambling at Nugget (ok, I chased comps but so glad I did). Fabulous trip! What I found at the Nugget: Really liked our renovated Gold Tower room and it seemed spacious with the new furnishings. Still received comped Absolute, Crown Royal and Chivas playing bar blackjack and slots. About 25 of us for a marathon dinner at Grotto and everyone was pleased. Would definitely eat there again. Bands, cabana time and all else were fun with great customer service everywhere. I had a little over 4,000 points on my players card -- visited a host and he comped the room and food. Plus he also comped our room for Oct 31 trip (yes, Halloween and the next two nights are already comped with only 4,000 points -- seems like a generous system to me). And a perfect ending to a mystical trip ... asked someone to get us a cab to the airport and he offered us the Golden Nugget limo ... for the price of a tip. We left Vegas in style ...
