My wife and I are planning on checking out one of Las Vegas Dive Bars and I have it narrowed between either Double Down Saloon or Frankie's Tiki Bar during our trip. I was wanting to hear anybody's opinion if one place would be better to visit than the other. Plus my wife is not a big fan of smoky places and I realize that my be the case on both of these bars but didn't know if one would be better than the other.

    I suggest either Dino's or Frankie's.

You want a dive bar, try the Stagedoor. no fancy schmancy cups or concoctions, just good old fashioned beer and people.

Double Down is quite the experience. One trip was enough for me though, it def fits your bill.

This is the one I remember most fondly, although it's very "earthy" in ambiance and I doubt if I would venture there alone. They have a signature nasty drink where the bartender pretends to squeeze out his wipe-off rag into it. "I'll have one of those." NOT!

Try Till 's at the Blair Hotel near the strip. Small but had video poker at the bar with maybe the best burger in town. Great atmosphere and bar tenders. A hidden gem.

My concern is your wife's sensitivity to smoke. Dive bars are going to be dingy and smoky. No way to get around that. I think the chances of getting Hepatitis or something at a dive bar is part of the attraction.

What kind of "dive bar" experience are you looking for? Do you want to say "Been there, done that". Or do you want some kind of specific experience? Double Down is famous for it's dive-ness. It's not too far from other attractions and you can pop in, grab some AssJuice and say, "Well, we survived that!" :)

Thank you everybody for some great ideas for my wife and I to think about. I'm kind of leaning towards Frankie Tiki bar since I want have a dive bar experience that has it's own uniqueness and my wife don't get too freak out at. Although I like Punk music and that type of scene I know my wife will not have the same appreciation.

Best moment at Double Down - Band is setting up.
Someone says "I wonder what kind of music it will be."
Country Girl next to me says "I bet it's not country, but as long as it's not screaming and banging, I'm good."
Two seconds later - band beings screaming and banging. :hahah:

I think Frankie's will give you both the experience you're looking for. Enjoy!

I don't consider Frankie's to be a dive at all. The drinks are thoughtfully crafted as is the atmosphere. It is certainly of it's own time and place and has "it's own uniqueness" though so maybe this is the right place for you two. Music is at an acceptable level and is not offensive, but not sleep inducing either. You will love it! Enjoy and report back!

    ^ This.

To me a dive bar is a no thrills locals joint to down a few drinks. Frankie's is a place worth checking out, but I wouldn't consider it a dive.

Dino's, Stage Door, Ellis Island and the Huntridge are good Vegas dive bars. Klondikie Casino on Sunset (now closed) would also qualify.

Atomic Lounge was a dive bar, but is still worth going to for a couple of drinks.

Passed by Stage Door for years never really thinking about stopping in. Decided to stop in last month and instantly regretted never going before. It's not the kind of place you'll spend a whole night, but for an hour or two it's a great place to have a few cheap drinks and just hang out. We had cheap drinks, joked with some locals and the juke box never stopped.....it was smoky though. Hit up Double Down in January as well. Went late afternoon for happy hour. Enjoyed it $2 anything drinks played some pool and put on some random punk rock music. The crowd was from early twenties to probably fifties. I was with my two college age kids so we had a blast. Heading back in April with my wife, we are late thirties and will be definitely be going to both these places and now will add Franks Tiki to the list.
