Yes, I actually think it's pathetic that I know what you are talking about. I go to several different news apps daily and on one app, it did look like it was blue and black, and on the other news app, white and gold. I didn't plan on losing any sleep over it tonight though :).

Lol...my wife showed me this last night. I kept saying it was blue and brown and she kept saying it was white and gold.

This has caused some minor marital dischord in my house. I think my wife is trolling me.

In case you're not getting current events in your neck of the woods, Leonard Nimoy died today.

The dress is white and gold in the 1 photo, it's blue and black in the other, very strange.

This was just on two different network news. Jeez. An expert said it had to do with how much light you were seeing it in.

Then they went to the London dress shop to see the actual dress. It's black and blue

I'm colorblind so I don't really care what color it is. Nice free advertising campaign by them though.

By the way, there's actually 4 different color combinations of the dress
    Their sales are up 400%.

    :(

As far as the dress, and as a photographer who is very in tune to color, it baffles me that this can indeed, when presented in a fixed form such as a screen display, appear differently to different people. When I get home I'm going to sample the photo and see just what color components make it up.

Both husband and I see white and gold even though we've been told factually it's blue and black.

Hope some 'specialist' doesn't conclude that anyone that doesn't see blue and black is whatever negative problem they can come up with to get published.

Buster says "is the dress gold and white or blue and black? Who gives a rat's ass but when they have one made of bacon, call me Mommy". I see it both ways depending where I focus first as I scroll but the blue and "black" looks more blue and olive brown to me.[IMG]

Buster is getting a new brother in April Linda so I'll be sure to post lots of photos when the new little guy joins our family...another Labradoodle but this new guy is a mini Australian Labradoodle. Buster is an F1 Labradoodle. We're excited.

Ok, I took a good look at two photos which have been going around. The first is the one with the strong backlight which appears to be gold and white to me, and the shot off of a web site or catalog of the dress, which appears to be to be blue and black.

The studio shot, sampled with Gimp, shows the darker portions as a dark close to neutral grey (almost black) with the blue component (rgb) as the strongest. The blue portion is most definitely blue, with red and green components far less intense.

Now the shot which has been passed around is more interesting. It has a strong backlight which looks to be neutral or even slightly warmish daylight. However, there's a top front light coming from camera left and top which appears to be quite cool (bluish) compared to the backlight. Sampling the two colors in this photo, the lighter portion (blue in the studio shot) is a bluish white, with green being the second most prominent component and a significant amount of red. The darker portion (just off black in the studio shot) is more interesting. Blue is the weakest component (it was strongest in the studio shot) and red is most prominent with green second, putting the hue between yellow and red, with significant "contamination" of blue, making it appear brownish-gold.

Now when I play with the levels on the two photos (keeping color balance intact) on the non-studio shot I can indeed set the levels low and get the dark portion to be a darker grey, and the light portion to be a definite blue. Playing with the levels on the studio shot (no color adjustments) I cannot get the blue to appear white nor the black to appear gold.

My conclusion is that the shot that is being passed around was either a coincidental or intentional mix of lighting that is indeed capable of inducing some illusory color shifts. No (pro or serious amateur) photographer is going to shoot with such a backlight and such a cool key light without a definite purpose. In my not so humble opinion it's probably a happy snap where what was rendered in the camera (LOL, phone?) was different from what the picture-taker saw in real life.

Every photographer knows that the eyes adapt quite readily to color imbalance, and that films and sensors do not. An indoor available light scene shot with daylight-balanced color film will appear as very warm-hued when printed without color correction.

I think it's a case of a bizarre lighting situation confusing various peoples' perception. Note that (almost) everyone agrees that the studio shot (taken under controlled lighting conditions) is indeed black and blue.

Oh well, fun to think about. :)
