Riveria players will go where ?

Since it looks like the Riveria may close. I wonder which casino(s) will pick up their players

 

What players? Isn't a big reason they closed due to not having any players?
I'm sure there were other factors playing into the sale too, but is it fair to say that lack of gaming revenue was the primary reason for the sale?

 

Lack of revenue period. And they haven't given themselves to many avenues to make money, either. If left to their own devices, I suspect their players would trickle downtown. But the database will most likely get sold and that may affect things. MGM bought the one from Sahara. Wonder if they want this one too.

 

I'd guess The STRAT probably or downtown.

 

Have to agree with this. When I visited there last trip, I didn't see more than 10 players in total.
Just for the record, I didn't play a single penny there.

 

That's what I think also. The Riviera players want low minimums. They probably forego lavish amenities in favor of low minimums so the Strat, Circus Circus, and Downtown fits the bill.

 

Yup, I stopped going there, it was depressing, a great big casino with hardly anyone there, the workers looking sad and bored, etc.

 

If they had alot of players they wouldnt be closing

 

Not a high to-do thing on my list but I'd like to stop by the Riviera this upcoming trip. Just to say goodbye, and that I was once in one of the hippest, lavish in-spots of Old Vegas.

 

For that same disgusting, outdated, odoriferous ambiance and clientele, they'll need to head down to Stateline, or Primm, NV.

 

Hard to believe there will be a similar thread someday about the Bellagio....but time marches on, and there probably will be.

 

I used to love that area, the stardust/ Ho/circus/riviera/ slots o fun, frontier was a short jaunt, the silver city was right down road, lots of memories.

 

Concur. Stayed there in the '70's and it was a hip place to be. Stopped by 2 years ago and the place was deserted. I left after dropping about $25 in Lobstermania. I might have played Craps, but there was no one gambling, just a crew standing around and shooting the shit, doing twirling practice with the croupier's stick. They were begging me to play, but I said I don't play empty tables, a superstition of mine.

 

The last time I was in the Riviera was probably 2 years ago. We had enough people to fill a blackjack table but they wouldn't open one for us. We left without paying there.

The North Strip was THE place to go. Riviera was on my casino hop every time, in my case from 1978 till about 2004, from Frontier up to Sahara, even Vegas World and Landmark.

I went up to SLS a day after it opened. I stopped at Riviera to see how it is and was. As some others have said, there were more employees than customers. I made a bee line across the street to Slots O Fun (even that place has gone way down) to catch the bus back to humanity.
I always envisioned the North Strip, once all the new Hotels/Casinos came on board in the 90's, that it would be an extension of Downtown. Places on the Strip that you could gamble and dine and see shows that cater to frugality. Having a Gold Coast on the Strip with $7.99 lunches, or a Boardwalk moved to the North Strip and see Purple Reign, then people could walk up and down the North Strip without inhabiting the more expensive properties at Mid to South Strip.

I have very few regrets in my life but probably not visiting Vegas during these times would be one of them. My uncles, aunties, mom, and friends all reminisce about these properties to me when we talk Vegas. They always chide me by saying "you should've came with us when we asked you". I admit there were many opportunities where I could have been there when the North Strip was the place to be. But priorities prevailed back then so it is what it is.

Now that I'm older and blessed with hard-earned discretionary income, all I can do is make my own memories of Vegas with what is here now and in the near future.

 

Amen to that brutha!!! I know I come off a bit harsh towards those stuck on memory lane, but I guess I question whether things and places were better then (Las Vegas included) or whether we were better. I used to have sex in the back of a '71 Mustang (a car I had for a couple years "77-'80), now couldn't even fit in that back seat!!!! I could make a $10 bill and six-pack last all night and make tons of great memories with my buds... man those were the days... but I honestly don't think it was the surrounding "landscape" as much as it was me being and feeling alive and too dumb to know. I wouldn't trade those days for anything, but I still keep thinking my best days are yet to come!!!

Some great Riviera memories in a recent book by our past Governor Miller. His Dad rose from a floor supervisor there to Chairman of the Board in it's heyday... but it occurred to me that the "memories" were far more related to his age and the hijinks he was up to to, than to the property itself. I'm pretty sure there're some 20 somethings (and older) making some crazy memories in Las Vegas tonight too!!!

 

If anyone with an ounce of creativity works at the Strat or SLS, they may be able to pick up Riviera cardholders (do they have I players card?) with some kind of tempting offer...but probably not. Anyway, gonna hit every endangered list casino while I can when I am in Vegas next.

It seems back in the day (1990s LOL) that I naturally gravitated towards the North Strip. I remember thinking the Riviera looked really swank at night - I confused it with the Rio when my brother talked about the WSOP! I scanned this old shot of the place. I knew I had an old photo of it and I wondered what kind of awesome food they had back then as compared to now. Nope, always greasy crap I guess? I wish I had gone inside!

 

There are many conventions there, along with the American Poolplayers Championships, so those guests will move to where the places these shows are rebooked.

Management is moving to the former Hilton near the convention center, so there is a good chance players can move with them (there is plenty of rooms available).

The rest will likely move downtown Las Vegas (including the Strat) or off-strip.

My first Vegas trip in 1991 was at the Riviera, and I stayed there again later in the decade. The casino was very popular at the time, and the rooms were decent. I gradually took my play to Harrah's and The Stardust, but still stopped in most trips. The past several years, I've stopped in every so often. Placed a Derby wager there (and got a julip cup), played a few hours low rolling, stopped in a few times for the pinball, and once to take a dump. I was hoping they would hang on until Resorts World opened and the North Strip became revitalized. If they could have held on a few more years, and did a total remodel, they had a chance to make it. The Stardust closure really killed the area.

Sad to see the Riviera go. Flamingo and Tropicana will be the last two standing from the 1940-1960 period.

 

Tropicana - it's old and dumpy like the Riv, it's off the beaten path like the Riv, it has 80 year old CW's, and it's the next place to be imploded. You can get your fill of old school Vegas at the Trop.
