We all know that Vegas can be tough for people with mobility issues, but I find that my health issues make Vegas particularly difficult for me. My problems are exacerbated by:

    - Overstimulation
    - Poor food choices
    - Alcohol
    - Sleep deprivation

Yeah, that sounds like Vegas is exactly the WRONG place for me to travel, but I love it!!!!

I have been pretty good on the last couple of trips, but some of you might remember the disaster I experienced when I got sick at Main Street Station and couldn't get anyone to bring me some gatorade and saltine crackers without 5 phone calls, including one from my husband, who played the "Don't you know who she is" card. :haha: Yeah, they still don't know.

So what do you do to plan for possible health problems on your trips? Do you have a trick to not get worn out and have symptoms?

    Diabetes.
I take a certain med that doesn't allow me to drink alcohol. Other than that I am ready to rock in roll.

Only serious health issue I had was during a trip several years ago, not a chronic problem. But that trip did teach me the lesson of always knowing where I can go close by to get routine medical supplies, etc. That knowledge paid off when I had a friend on a group trip get seriously ill two summers ago.

I always pack some immodium, pepto tablets and a small bottle of pepto liquid because at some point, I know the g.I. trots are going to attack.

If A+B+C+D=E, can you moderate one or some of the inputs so as not to arrive at the unwanted conclusion?

Really just comes down to personal needs and issues, as you know, the specifics of what gets you and why, how best to avoid the worst of it. Ailments among us vary so widely, really hard to suggest a course of action short of avoidance. I've spent a few days in Vegas hotel rooms with the bug, but that came to town with me, so the things I try to avoid are truly brutal hangovers and not blowing out every vert in my back on the course.

As for planning ahead, note what you expect might befall you and pick up on the way to the hotel what you need to combat it.

I'm not a praying man, but I am full of "good lucks." So good luck!!!!

Vegas even gets the best of the healthiest of people. I almost always have a "vegas crud" upon returning. I've finally kicked a cough that I've had since I came back a week ago. It gets the best of us.

I get Migraines - and smoke and Red Wine are triggers, as well as high preservative food, and lack of sleep. I move away if someone is smoking near me, don't drink red wine (or wine at all), try to watch what I eat.. and usually get a good nights rest - (thanks to the beds at Aria), but I also carry a preventative med - Maxalt - that I take as soon as I feel a migraine coming on. Normally I only need to take one and can catch it early.. but if it lingers- I take another and a little caffeine.. and lay down in the dark.

Keeping the trips short like 3 nights does help prevent overdoing it.
And as you mentioned......its all choices.

I think for me longer trips are better than short. On short trips, I am constantly moving around trying to get everything I want to see/do completed.

My issues are 1. Over weight which I am going to work on (I keep saying it, i need to do it) and 2. I have arthritis really bad in my ankles so after walking a lot of standing a long time they start to flair up and mobility becomes and issues. I try to heed it off by taking four alieve before I do a lot of walking or a lot of standing and will spike that a few hours later with two more. Doc says its ok so I do it.

The overstimulation is really hard to avoid. Maybe stay somewhere casino-free so at least you come back to a quiet environment, Delano? Vdara?

I don't have any current health problems thank the Lord.

However, I did do Vegas with cancer a little over a year ago. Granted I didn't know I had it at the time, just thought I had a bout of bronchitis and a sore shoulder. So I medicated up, good pain killers and some prescription strength cough syrup (codeine and promethazine), and went about my business. Needless to say I didn't even drink that trip because I was so hopped up and the syrup put me to bed. Might be the only time I've ever slept more than 3-4 hours in Vegas, I was in bed by 11 every night and up around 10. Came home and was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma a month later, although I continued to workout, go to class and play flag football during that month. Thankfully battled through chemo and I'm healthy now and have been back to Vegas once since my victory and got to do it right with late nights, lots of booze and little sleep and get to do it again in 6 weeks! To modern medicine!!

    Congratulations on being cancer free!

For me, thankfully, no serious health issues. I do have a very delicate stomach though, most definitely aggravated by stress. So for me, keeping my stress level down the days prior to traveling is my best hope for a smooth trip, which with my job can be a challenge. I do travel with every over-the-counter medicine though because we all know that there are no drug stores on the strip :).

The other problem is when at home, I don't smoke much, and am currently in one my many attempts to quit. In Vegas, this turns into a pack of day (or more), which is actually worse because your body isn't used to that much nicotine and it can make you feel not so special.

I often seem to come down with a common cold or something just after I return. I figure it's various bugs that are going around that I'm not immune to.

My one brother has had worse luck. We had to take him to the ER for a foreign object in eye once and last year to "Quack In A Box" for a cough that would not let up.

He is probably talking about metformin, which is a diabetes drug that can interact with alcohol.

You are probably thinking about Antabuse which is not used anymore.

I like the idea of a low-key, non-casino hotel to get away from the stimulation for a while. I might try that. I know that one of our peeps has been staying at Vdara and really likes it.

There's an extra element in that I usually travel alone. I will usually meet up with Buffoons, but I'm on my own for 70% of my time in town. I know to beg out of things like getting day-drunk at the pool because the heat and booze isn't good for me. But when I have a health issue, I'm reluctant to call a friend for help. It's not like I've never held anyone's hair when they derail on the Grain Train, but asking for help is hard, because I don't want to be the Debbie Downer. ;)

Bringing my own snacks and things has helped. And staying at a place with room service is a MUST. That and knowing when I'm getting close to my limits and knowing when to go back to the hotel and rest.

It sucks though. I kind of wish I could stay 25 forever and just party around the clock. Stupid aging. ;)

glimepiride, I have high sugar in the morning but fine the rest of the day. This med nips that in the bud. But you can not drink with it. Doesn't bother me much.

Just to show that the head gurus are looking at trends, the MGM has created the Staywell rooms and suites.

    Sonya,

Sounds like you're a strip person, but if you ever stay downtown consider the Downtown Grand. It has more of a "boutique hotel" feel than any Vegas casino/hotel we've stayed at. You can stay there and never see the casino. The casino isn't very large, is well-ventilated, and is pretty quiet compared to most. We like staying and playing there for those reasons. In comparison, the Golden Nugget casino is so loud that I can't play there for long even when we're staying there. It's also smokier. Main Street Station casino has a very high ceiling and good ventilation and isn't too loud. Forget any of the other downtown places if you don't like smoke and loud environments.
