Is it generally safe to leave a laptop / laptop bag at the Bell Desk, when storing other luggage? On an upcoming trip for a conference, I'll be arriving in the morning and likely have a few hrs before I'm able to check in. I'll have my work lap top with, and don't want to lug it around for those few "free" hours I have before check in, and conference activities. Normally on personal trips, I'll just hide my tablet or ultrabook in my suitcase if I need to store luggage at the Bell Desk. This may be one of those things that's no big deal, but just trying to avoid one of those "what was I thinking moments" if it's not a good idea. Staying @ Mandalay Bay

    Thanks

    Yep.

    What if it did happen?

Are you ok with telling work your laptop got stolen/misplaced?

I leave my laptop in my suitcase with bell desk on most trips. I've never had an issue but there is always some risk.

Flamingo has security lockers for $1.00. You get a key so no one else can open it (in theory). I suppose other casinos have the same thing.

I've left my laptop, iPad, and other stuff with MB in the past without any issues. Hope that makes you feel warm and fuzzy. :)

Same -- left a laptop with Mandalay and other main Strip places with no concern. You get a tag for each item.

Hmmm, as an IT guy I can tell you most companies have a written policy about leaving your corporate computer unattended. Example my last company gave all the employees locks, the laptop had to be secured in hotel or in your possession. If it got swiped out of your car you were held personally liable (Paycheck minus Missing Laptop Cost). Depending on what business you are in and what kind of data you have on your laptop, this could be a CEE (Career Ending Event) if it goes missing.

    I wouldn't risk it.

Agreed. My employer has policies against leaving my laptop unattended or unlocked. If it was stolen in this case, they wouldn't make me pay, but it probably would mean no raise and no bonus at year-end, at a minimum. I would either: 1) pay for early check-in and lock it down in your room or 2) lug it around.

I have done it on pretty much every trip without much worry. One thing I do is I will put the laptop in the regular suitcase with a lock and not in the laptop bag.

I wonder if this rule has been relaxed. In 2011 I wanted to leave my bags which included a Lowpro backpack which is a laptop bag and camera bag in one and the bell desk asked if there was a computer in the bag and I answered honestly hoping that meant they would take better care of it, they told me it was against policy to hold a laptop at the bell desk. That was at either Flamingo or Golden Nugget, I think the Nugget.

Jimmy Poon says you could consider popping the hard drive out and keep it with you in some sort of electromagnetically protected enclosure. The laptop is just a laptop. The data is everything.

I was faced with this decision last trip when I had Jimmy's borrowed laptop with me. I lugged it around for 3 hours rather than check it.

I have a backpack type laptop bag.
I leave it at the bell desk EVERY trip, either before check in, or after check out with time to kill before flight home.
Done it at Harrah's, Flamingo, Caesars, Ballys, Mirage, Rio, MC,.............etc........
I've done it at least 50 times, with nary a problem. Slip the bell dude a finski (or more if many bags) and don't sweat it.

BTW - I am an IT guy. :)

PS - For work, we log into a virtual remote desktop. No work data (or personal data) on laptop. Just some local apps of personal nature.

I've left my personal laptop in a sleeve in a duffle bag or suitcase many times, but I wouldn't even think of checking my work laptop

I think it depends on what business you're in and what's on it. If someone stole it and data got out would it end up on the news? Then no. Would you get fired if you lost it? Better not to chance it.

Best guess is you will be fine.

That said, I wouldn't check it. I would bring a backpack with the sole purpose of carrying it along with me for those few hours.

DH and I leave out laptops/ipads in our backpacks and check them all the time. I am more likely to accidentally leave it somewhere in the first few hours that I get to Vegas than having something happen at the Bell desk.

    THIS.

I can't believe the paranoia of leaving something with the bell desk.

Pay for early checkin or tip $20 to get it.

Nothing likely will go wrong if you leave the laptop.

You will actually enjoy your free hours if you pay to get in early.
