Could you actually graduate from UNLV, if you went there?

I was playing blackjack next to some kid at the Flamingo, he looked about 19. We got to talking, and he is a student at UNLV.

UNLV is behind Paris. There is ZERO percent chance I would have been able to graduate from college with the LV strip less than a mile away from my dorm.

I didn't turn 21 until September of my senior year, so I probably could have coasted through my senior year and made it. However, I went to law school a few years later, and I think it would have been very difficult to make it through UNLV Law.

More impressive to me is people who make it through Tulane. New Orleans caters more to the underage patron than does LV in my experience.

 

I have always thought there have to be a whole bunch of parents paying off credit cards their kids charged up partying it up on the strip!

 

One of the guys I use to work with went to UNLV. He lasted 2 years, when I asked him what his major was he jokingly said MGM. He says he did really well at sports betting and not so good at Blackjack. Then UNLV said maybe it is time for you to go......It sure sounded like fun but no, I do not think I would come out with a degree

 

At that age --
I came out of HS with some college scholarship ( football ) offers.
I wished I had known about UNLV, at that time.
ASU I visited - but was sure I wouldn't start.
UNLV, at that time would have been a nice alternative.
I didn't even know what gambling was about back then --
bet I would have found out TOO QUICKLY........I don't think I could have
lasted 4 years !!!!

 

I flunked out of a cold weather, land locked school, the University of Michigan. I wouldn't have made it too long in Vegas.

 

While it might be a little more difficult, I'm not sure it would be that much different from any other major university. After awhile, I think the allure of the strip would wear off. Alcohol and debauchery were readily available to students of all ages at every school I've visited so UNLV wouldn't be different in that regard.

I do think Vegas would be a challenge for the cash strapped, "Ramen noodles and $.50 pitchers" crowd, which comprises about 99% of college students.

 

Not college, but the guy who taught me the fundamentals of blackjack and craps honed those skills while stationed at Nellis Air Force Base.

 

It sure would've been tough for me... at Chico I couldn't stay away from a kegger party, thankfully they were mostly on Thursday and Friday nights. Being so close to 24/7/365 debauchery would been really tough!!!
But as Ohio State Alum points out, I didn't have a lot of dough in college. First couple years, my folks sent me $50 a month for spending money. So the Strip wouldn't have become a regular thing, more of an occasional treat I think.

I know lots of UNLV grads now and just as many, if not more UNLV washouts. I think it's harder for those who come in from out of state, as those of us who live here really don't give a second thought to slot and VP machines in grocery and convenience stores and 24/7 available booze with no last call.

 

i've got 3 kids...my daughter could handle it and i think it would be awesome if she went there, but she wants to do some oklahoma state junk...my youngest boy wants to go to unlv, but he couldn't handle it...dang it...my other boy could care less where he goes to school.

me...i didn't discover vegas until 2008...didn't even know it existed...heck , we took a roadtrip to las angeles from denton in 97 and there is one part of the road where you turn left for la...right for vegas...we didn't even think about going to vegas...ugh...

 

To quote Bluto from Anmal House: "Seven years of college down the drain." I would attend as long as I could but never graduate. Too many distractions.

 

My "Freshman 15" would be replaced by the "Freshman -15K"

 

I went to school just down the road from Tulane at LSU. I was often in uptown NO to party with friends. Only in uptown NO could a bar have a bad rep for "too many high school kids." Though the stereotype for Tulane students are either Jewish families or kids from wealthy families in the Northeast that either didn't/couldn't make it into an Ivy.

Both Baton Rouge and New Orleans is a weird culture where at 18 you can get into almost any bar legally. But technically the drinking age is 21. It's loosely enforced to say the least. I can only recall being carded once in New Orleans and denied. But they don't kick you out, they just don't serve.

 

Not me. Now a good ski hill, that could -- and did -- subvert the college track for some time.

 

The first bar I ever drank at was in New Orleans. I was down there for the OSU/LSU title game in January of 2008 and it was really the first trip I ever went on without adult supervision. I was only 19 so up to that point, all of my drinking experiences came courtesy of Natty Light from a keg. Like you said, I was never carded and the only time anyone even batted an eyelash was when we were unknowingly standing in the street and blocking the exit to an adult club. Bourbon Street opened my eyes and a couple of Hurricanes knocked me on my ass! Great memory.

 

I was there for that game as well. If you make it back there is plenty to new Orleans that doesn't include Bourbon Street. No self respecting local goes there unless they have a Yankee tourist like yourself with them, haha.

 

Bourbon Street sucks. It's for gringoturistas (Yankees to proper southerners) who'd go to Hawaii and eat at Outback.

 

What's so interesting to me, though, is that I've had some great nights out in areas very close to Bourbon St. There are some much cooler bars elsewhere in the Quarter, and Frenchmen St. is not far away either. And all of that feels worlds away from Bourbon, even when you're only a block away.

I think if you're the gambling type then going to school near so many casinos can be pretty dangerous. But most college kids are too young to have gotten into gambling already, especially since they are underage for it in most states.

But for the typical teenager/college-aged kid I think going to school in a big college town is way more dangerous to their graduation prospects. There are parties going on all the time, everyone is around the same age, bars are just full of college kids, etc. The Vegas strip is a nice playground for adults, but for people underage (and generally underfunded) there isn't a whole lot there given that they card carefully and don't need college kid business.
