Is it just me... have I gone and got crotchety? There's still a lot of fun, upbeat threads about Las Vegas here on the VMB, but lately there seems to be a sizable amount of negative this, negative that. Those greedy bastards running airlines. Gas has come down, how dare they not lower their prices! Bad food (see White Castle or any buffet thread) "intestinal distress", "made my farts so bad, it woke me up" (OK that one's pretty funny, but still). Rip-off casinos (see anything about CET/Loveman or any comps thread). And with the exception of a recent resort-fee thread (I don't know how the VMB resort-fee militia missed it (maybe the AARP meeting was in session), as there was actually some general and reluctant "acceptance" comments made.) The anti-resort fee mob continues their willingness to stay in a hostel, as long as it doesn't have the fee.

Taxi Drivers need to be in jail (see anything Long-Haul) by the way the Taxi Cab Authority yesterday alerted the legislature that they're requesting six-(6) new enforcement agents to focus exclusively on long-hauling. If approved they'll start in July. Clubbers and party-goers... damn LA trust fund babies... how do you know where they're from, where they got their money... and why the hell do you hate them so much?

Las Vegas shows now apparently suck. Rental cars are too damn much. Hell, even Joe's got a slight beef with Main Street Station!!!!

Now I know that times are changing and judging by so many comments here, not for the best, and this board is to alert folks to both the good and the bad, as well as to pontificate.

It just seems like there's more than the "usual" amount of criticizing being done lately. Has the board become a bastion for "nattering nabobs of negativism" (credit Agnew/Safire) or are there still some Vegas freaks out there who fly out, lose their minds, have a blast and return home in a fog only to wanna do it all again as soon as possible?

Count me in the Vegas Lovin' Freaks group... I'm there once a month for business and yeah the company pays for my travel, room, food, etc., but as a partner in the company I'm not really on someone else's nickel. Certainly every cent I gamble with is my own. I get excited before each and every trip and hell... I already live in Nevada. I love the excitement that you can feel on the plane, I love the anticipation you can feel at McCarran of all those arriving. It's a FUN place to visit and party in and it's a mini-vacation for me EVERY single time!

I am newish here, so I cannot comment on the past.

People I suppose like to complain? When I managed the arcade, I rarely had someone come up to me and tell me how great everything was, but man if we f'd up, I'd hear it. Human nature I suppose.

I was shocked when I call parents to tell them their kid did really well on a project or whatever, cause parents usually expect a call from a teacher to be negative.

If someone had a poor experience somewhere, they want to tell the world for two reasons. First to be punitive to the property and second to warn people about what they went through. Other than in the TR's I do not see someone say "I went to Flamingo as was treated like royalty"

That being said, put me in category II, I am on 32 and have 10 trips to Vegas. My first trip the old properties were still on the strip but clearly in their waning days. So the Vegas I see today is "normal" for me. I get the longing for the old times people because when I read the history of Vegas, I wish it were like that too, but I never experienced it first hand. People cling to memories of the past and a lot of times the past in their mind is not as great as the present.

After almost 2 decades of running this board (YIKES!) it seems we go in cycles. There will be periods where the board will get really negative and the snark level tends to rise. But it usually flows back to normal. The mods and I are working hard to keep the personal attacks and the worst of the snark off the board. Let us know if you see something we miss.

I like to remind people that we're all here because we love Las Vegas. Even when we have a bad run at the tables or a crappy trip, we find the love again and head back to give it another shot.

I noticed it in the thread about community tables. lol

So, in the lighten-it-up spirit of the great Al Czervik: "Hey, everybody, we're all gonna get laid!"

Thanks for all the work you and the other mods put in to keep this board "civil". I, for one, greatly appreciate it.

Some of us more than others, maybe that's the root of all the negativity!

    lol

Negativity comes of change. People want what they want to remain what they want. Familiarity in travel and experiences is a common-denominator for many. Even if the change turns out to be positive, change still spins folks' bunnies.

So this is where we find something to complain about? I for one can't find anything at the moment. I can't complain since I'm going to be in Vegas really soon. I'm too excited about it to complain.

I don't really mind it too much around here since I find it funny about the complaints people have sometimes

Dammitt, they overcooked my steak and the 22 year old hooker sitting on my lap is bitching about her Scotch is not top shelf and she refuses to wear thigh high nylons because young women don't do that shit anymore and I'm going to report her negativity to the guy out on the street who slapped her card and gave it to me.

Don't these dealers know anything. How dare they deal me losing cards! I know all of the odds down to .0000001% and I swear theses bastards are cheating. None of these damn tourists know how to throw dice. That must be why only 3 of my 27 bets are winning at anything approaching .89%. Even the slots at the end of the aisles and near the entrances are losing. Forget VP, I can't find a decent pay table anywhere on the Strip.

I give up on tipping! None of them are worth 20%. I give everybody a dollar! I gave an old lady from Topeka a dollar to give up her spot in line at Wynn's buffet crab leg table. The old bitch put it in the slot I had just left and hit a doublegazooble3way bonus for a $5000 hand pay! It's outrageous!

And why are they giving me this shitty room with a view of the air conditioning towers? I booked 2 days ago through Travel Zoo for $6 a night! This is uncalled for!

Next year I'm going to Reno!!!

I'll agree that we seem to be on the negative side of the cycle. And clearly, some posters go way too far in their attacks on casinos/restaurants/airlines etc. But I don't think we want to discourage people from legitimate gripes. Do we?

I am more than willing to wade through a handful of over-the-top posts claiming all cabbies murder kittens or Gary Loveman is a high ranking member of ISIS if it means I get pertinent (and potentially money-saving) information.

Ultimately, I think Hammie is probably on the right track as far as the cause(s).

P.S. I'm a few days away from unemployment and I'm still actively planning two Vegas trips if that tells you anything about where I stand...
