Table Games Learn From My Fail--Good Lord

Friday night, another visit to my local. Started playing my new found desire to play the don't. It went badly to start. While I know the dice have no memory and there's no really such thing as a "hot table", the shooters WERE persistently hitting points. So I flipped to the pass. And I started winning nicely. Mostly playing $25 on the pass with with max odds (5x). And playing mostly $30 on the 6 and 8. I'd recovered my losses and was up...probably a few hundred. Dice come to me. I'm playing $5 each on the All/Small/Tall.

I start pretty good, hit a point or 2. Hit the Tall. Nice hit. Keep going. The table is PACKED with money. (At this point, my roll had gone on for probably 15-20 minutes already). I get the small down to the 2 and the 3. People were throwing quarters on aces and any craps. One of the more nuts tables I've ever been on. It hit the 2. Madness. I throw again, hit a hard 8 and the 2 guys to my left and playing it had. Next roll...off the table (with an ace showing on the table). Next roll...3!

It took 10 minutes to pay everyone off (there were easily 7 people playing the bonus). Biggest win on a table for me ever. After being paid off, I was up...about $1600. Next roller does well, at this point, up about $1900. Table cools off...I figure, play a little longer, get a "round number win".

Nope. Going on fucking tilt. All gone. And my initial buy-in. So from a $1900 win to a $600 loss.

Anytime in the past where I've gone from a win to a loss, it's been small and not really bothersome. (From a $100 or $200 win to a $300 loss or something). But this one hit hard, obviously. To hit an All/Small/Tall and throw it away...so stupid. It actually might be the moment that really does teach a lesson. I should have known better though--my bells should have been blaring because of last week--making the nice win playing the don't and then losing it all on BJ. But this was atrocious. But it's part of the game. Deep breath...and learn from it...don't chase.

 

.......but it will always be a great story That 's the one I tell myself, if that's of any help. Sounds like a fun run though.

 

Tough sledding, I feel for you. I've always been of the belief that the lessons that we learn the best are the ones that we pay most dearly for. Chances are you'll learn from this and it won't happen again. Most of us have been there: Chasing losses and letting wins get away from us. Anyway, kudos on a great roll!!! Go get 'em next time dude.....

 

Oh yeah. That's how I'm taking it. The win was a blast. Fist bumps, screaming, high fives. LOL.

 

Been there several times. Years ago I brought $8K to PH, got to the tables about 6 pm. By 8 pm I had like $600 left. Went and had dinner, went to bed. That was my bankroll for two weeks. Hit the high limit slots the next morning and within an hour had $25K. By the end of the trip it was all gone.

There should be pedestals where we stupid people have to stand in shame for an hour or two when this happens. Problem is you'd probably need a land area the size of Iowa because we're not alone.

 

I rolled long enough once that I hit 20 6's and 8's for myself and lord knows what other numbers for people before I crapped out. The only problem, I never pressed my bet and was winning $5 a pop. Walked away with $100 in my pocket while everyone else had to have hundreds or thousands. It was pretty cool earning yourself a nickname at the table while your streak was going. "big orange" due to me having an orange t-shirt on that morning. Sadly, that is the only time I ever won anything at the craps tables.

 

I don't play that big...but I've been there....once a High Roller threw my wife and I a couple $100 chips each (just for rolling well!), when we had only bought in for $50 each!
Obviously, he was up like $20k...we all lost it right back though...that's just the allure of craps...

 

That is tough and would be even tougher if it were me and my wife was there.
Although I would eventually get over it, she would make sure I never did.

LOL. I bet most of the married men here hear that. As for me, it was either share my story or stew on it in solitude.

Like you and the others who mentioned it - I too have been in that spot. Up quite a bit and then you go on tilt and goodbye profits and then some...lesson learned for sure. But it is tough to cut bait sometimes when you're in the moment.

 

This is exactly what the casino's count on and we rarely disappoint them.

 

Interesting conversation. When I've gotten up really big I always go back to usual spread when the heater is over. If I continued with bigger bets on subsequent shooters, I could see how it's possible to give it all back. Is this the situation people are talking about here?

 

This is easy to happen in a game like craps. It's easy to think the next roller is the one. Many times I have been ahead a little and chicken out on raising my bets and lose
a bundle I would have made. Sometimes after this happens I can go in makeup mode and start chasing. Gambling and especially craps really test your emotions. I just
never go over my days gambling budget.

Spot on. Great story by the OP, with an all too familiar ending. It took one day of disappointing myself to avoid it happening frequently. I've told the long form before but long story short, I turned $20 into $200+ on a TableMaster BJ game...twice in less than an hour. My loss was only $40 but I couldn't believe I gave back those winnings so easily. Since then I've played back a few small ones, but my biggest winnings, just under and around a grand, have all walked right out the door with me no matter how quickly they happened.

 

That's really the lesson I'm hoping I've learned here. Ideally, I should have quit when my roll finished. (I actually rolled 2 more times, I think, before I SO'd on the 3rd roll after hitting the All/Small). Even though I made another few hundred on the next couple shooters, walking after I rolled actually made the most sense. But...alas/

 

I didn't actually increase my bets after, but the table just never found the consistency it had though my roll. (Before that, you could play the don't consistently and make something, and then for a circuit before me, it was definitely on the right side--every shooter hit at least 1 point). After my roll, it was just garbage no matter how I played and by then, I said if I could just stay at a win of 1000...then 500...and so on. Really the problem by then was that I was on tilt, so really nothing was gong to save me, except a hot shooter. Only saving grace of the whole thing was I didn't dig. I only lost my original buy-in.

 

Judging by your spread ($130 minimum) a 1k winner is probably only double your buy in, if that. It doesn't look like that much of a loss. Since you were at a local its much easier to walk if you get profit quickly but if you go to a destination, playing through a double up isn't terrible. You go to play.

Edit: read op and saw you wre up $1.9k on a $600 buy in. You only play hit and runs? You get 4 initial spreads (or less if you take more than 2x odds) with that buy in.

 

I was down initially because I started playing the don't. I only flipped when I was down to about $50. (So yeah, there, I wasn't betting $25 on the pass). I worked my way up, but of that $1900, $1330 of it was from hitting the All/Small/Tall. And size of win or loss is all relative. It wasn't a big loss for me, really. But being up $1900 is the most I've been up playing anything, so losing the win hurt a little more than otherwise. (I've only recently increased the level of my play and from what I can tell, $25 pass/don't pass bets are pretty rare at my local.
