I was playing BJ a few days ago and was doing horribly. This was a week or so after doing very well. I had just bought in again and the pit boss asked for my SSN. Any idea why?

Bought in or cashed out more than 10k cash in one day. Happens to me all the time since I don't use a LOC.

Pit boss will walk over.with a pen and pad and ask for ss

It's due to Federal money laundering rules. It's a "currency transaction report" or a "CTR" and, like RB said, for $10,000 and above.

What if you are not comfortable giving it out in that setting? I wouldn't spout my SSN off while sitting at a table and I wouldn't write it down either. There has to be a more discreet way to ask and answer, right?

He did ask me quietly. I'm not a quiet or reserved person though, so he may have handled it differently for others.

Ok gotcha - I was thinking that he walked up and asked while the dealer was counting out chips and then plugged it into the little computer all while the other players are looking on
