I'd like to know what all of you out there feel is the reason(s) that sets Vegas apart from the rest of the cities/vacation destinations.

Entertainment? Dining? Nightclubs? Shopping? Sightseeing? Stripclubs? Brothels?

I might've missed some things mentioned above, but isn't all of these things available in any major city?

So if more emphasis is given to all of these things except gambling, would Vegas really be able to increase their visitor count (as discussed in the Casino Industry and Development thread)?

In my opinion, Vegas is set apart from the rest because of the gambling AND all of the above. I know several friends who admit that they enjoy attending business conferences and conventions in Vegas because of the gambling. I'm pretty sure many people who attend these events feel the same way. And we all know Vegas has a LOT of conventions.

So, what do you think? Can Vegas still increase their visitor count if less and less emphasis is given to gambling, along with the comps and perks that come with it? I for one don't think so.

I think the combination of things you mentioned and the fact that they are among the top in the country in those categories is what sets LV apart. Their enormous resorts are perfect for large conventions and few other cities can handle crowds like LV.

I am not sure about the "brothel" thing, you do have to travel a bit for that to partake legally.

I think LV has begun over the last few years to increase their appeal to the non gambling crowd beginning with their over the top clubs and locking in the worlds best D.J.'s to resident contracts. The top grossing night clubs have been LV clubs for the last several years.

What sets Vegas apart for me is its uniqueness. There really is nowhere else like it in the world that offers the same top class mixture of all the things you mentioned.

Entertainment, dining, nightclubs, shopping, sightseeing, stripclubs and brothels are all of course available in all major cities, but there is something magical about LV which keeps people going back again and again. I think it’s the combination of so many fun and exciting things in a relatively small area, many of which are available 24/7 and on the doorstep. I have never met anyone who has been to Vegas once and doesn't desperately want to go back again.

it's not about the gambling alone because I can gamble 15 mins from home. For me it's like Disneyworld for adults. I know that term has been coined before, but it's just a place for me to get away and live larger than I am. get free stuff from a host. drop $100 bills like they're dollars. get a drink anytime I want. just get away from the daily grind and be entertained while doing so. I can relax if I want, gamble if I want, see a show, people watch, whatever I want to do. The allure of Vegas (for me) is unmatched by anything else. I love to travel and see new things, but Vegas is my favorite getaway, probably because I can feel like I have a million bucks for a few days even tho I don't have it.
when I get back to reality, $100 bills become $100 bills again. work is work, everything is "normal".

For me it's the ENERGY. There is an energy in the air that can't be duplicated anywhere else I've been.

I live in Australia and travel overseas once a year to the USA but we have one golden rule and that is we have to go to Vegas as one of the cities we visit.
The reason we go is for the 'vibe' that we never get anywhere else, for example I have travelled to Macau (Hong Kong) where they have replicas of some of the hotels like the Venetian and we never got the 'vibe' there!
Vegas to us means gambling (but not over top only what we can afford), dining out, shows, shopping and checking out hotels, places and talking to people who are visiting just like us.
We never want to leave and also wish we had booked an extra day and yes it's a long way to go but it's our favourite spot!

Anyone can feel comfortable and not out of place and no one gives a Sh*t. How many places can you walk around and grandma is sitting there with middle aged business man beside her and young party chick next to him and no one blinks an eye, no one out of place. You can were a suit, cargo shorts or halter top and stand right beside each other and no one gives a damn. You can be white, black, yellow, green or pink and that is fine. You can start your day at 4AM or end your day at 4AM...or never end your day.

Great word... that's exactly it for me too!

Same for me... The drinks flow freely in New Orleans for sure... I just feel so scuzzy the morning after there and never feel that way in Vegas.

I think the fact it is so isolated in the desert really works in its favor. For most people visiting, the weather and desert, with mountains nearby is different than they are used to. The
freedom of being and doing what you want when you want, without the neighbors or your boss or children, parents, etc. judging you is intoxicating. The gambling, shows, and clubs
are world class and reasonably priced. The cheapest hotels in downtown Vegas would be double or triple in most cities. The high end strip hotels rival any most hotels in the world
at a fraction of the cost. Can we just have a monorail from the airport to downtown ?

    Energy is a great description.

    Uniqueness is another.

Throw in gambling along with the shows, food, drinks and everything else Vegas has to offer and that's what makes it desirable.

I can't bet sports anywhere else like Vegas. Sure I can do it online but it's not the same.

I can find a craps table two hours drive away from me now or ten minutes away from my place outside Philly but it's not the same.

I agree wholeheartedly. I just LOVE the ENERGY the city emanates. But why is this so? Don't get me wrong, I don't want this to change ever, it just that as much as I love it, I'm trying to understand it.

"I think it's the combination of so many fun and exciting things in a RELATIVELY SMALL AREA, many of which are available 24/7 and on the doorstep."

You brought up a very valid point. This might be one of the reasons why Vegas is so unique and special. Thanks for the input!
