I have heard some backlash about Sony cancelling the opening of the movie. I absolutely agree that people have a right to an opinion, to differ from myv views, and to say whatever they want to a reporter's question. Freedom of Speech would be worthless if we all agreed.

I only have one question for the people who criticize this decision: Would you send your family to a theater in New York City on opening night?

Me? I'm too much of a sissy to challenge a guy in a suicide vest. I'll skip it.

I'll quote Michael Jeter (RIP) from the Fisher King fame...years ago he was on Letterman telling a story about seeing a Paris Dr
because he thought he was smoking too many cigarettes...

the French Dr rolled his eyes and. took a drag off his own cigarette and said "Oh stop being so dramatic!"

yes I would take my family to the movies now, it's nothing but a cyber attack and Sony and the big theater chains are being pussies

Sony is kowtowing to a country who thinks their leader doesnt shit; watches old movies; is fascinated with Dennise Rodman; and the guy laughing all the way to the gulag is his royal Kim Jong Dongs barber.

At least we have Team America and they can't take that one from us. I don't like the idea of The Interview and I really didn't like it opening on Christmas but I can't believe that it got shut down completely. Looks like they are going to try and do an insurance claim on it so that shuts down a later release date or VOD.

    1. I predict this thread will have a short half life.
    2. I do not have children, but I would go see it if only out of defiance.
    3. Sony was in a no win position: If they release it they are greedy and irresponsible. If they pull it they are gutless. In the end their in house lawyers settled the issue.
    4. Bad day for America, far reaching precedent set.

Sony can put it on Pay for View or Netflix. They may make more money than predicted. They can say they didn't cave to blackmail.

I still wouldn't watch this movie even if it were free. Not anything I'm interested in.

I've seen previews for the movie and I had no interest, but yea, given this capitulation to terrorism, I would take my family to the show out of defiance alone. Amazing that political leaders and the media aren't more outraged by this.

Are you serious, or is this a social experiment? My answer is yes.

From what I've read Sony wants to try collecting on an insurance policy against the movie by citing an act of terrorism, and in order to do that they can't release the movie through any platform.

I'm skeptical the movie would make a ton of money if it was released online as so many people are suggesting anyway. The estimates from analysts in that industry say even with the current hype they'd need to charge at minimum $20 and likely much more for it to compare with the expected box office receipts. Like you said you wouldn't watch it even if it was free, neither would I. By all accounts the movie sucks and I think when actually confronted with the idea of paying $20-$30 to watch it peoples' desire to watch it for patriotic reasons will quickly fade.

Sony Pictures has handled this entire thing so badly and as shocked as we are that a major company folded so easily to vague and empty threats from anonymous hackers, it seems to be even more shocking to people oversees from what I've seen. What an awful precedent and embarrassment for the country.

Joe, on one of the worst and most dangerous days in our nation's history, 2,800 people were killed in New York. On any given day, there are 15,000,000 people in NYC. Despite the media portrayal, there were many "survivors" of 9-11, myself included.

On what scale do you think a purported attack would occur on movie theaters? Be honest. I don't want to downplay threats of violence or terrorism, but we need to be realists at the same time.

As far as whether I would go to the theater if the movie was out of course I would (not to see this movie though cuz it looks like shit). Its beyond a ludicrous level of paranoia to actually be afraid. If we're supposed to live in fear of unknown terror risks then no one should go to Vegas and any of us who live in major cities should avoid even going outside, yet the only ones who seem to freak out are people who live in middle America suburbs because that is where foreign terrorists really want to strike.

I'll keep my reply brief and I won't get into my reasoning because I don't want to be disrespectful and/or upset anybody.

    In my honest opinion, the correct response to this threat would have been;

a-make the opening 3 or 4 times bigger than it was supposed to be, more of everything, more media, more hype, more celebrities

b-camping & tailgating style set ups in the parking lots of all the theaters waiting for the movie to open, with lots of media coverage and celebrities

c-all kinds of super tacky wear-ables indicating that you're on your way to see the movie or you've just seen it

    d-pile it on in general

e-send the message that if they want you, they know where to find you, you'll be at the movies, so come on over which is the biggest F-U you can give in this situation

f-it might be the worst movie ever made, but, that's beside the point

I dont believe Sony was hacked and certainly not by North Korea.

Keep in mind the only news we get about them comes from one source, our government. Its not like they have bloggers or independant sources we can verify.

Knowing this we can make them out to be the big bad boogie man as much as we like and there is no way anyone will know any different.

So knowing this and also knowing that some might have an agenda to tightly control the internet it, doesnt take a really big leap to put 2 and 2 together. Now they might have a good "reason" to clamp down on it. Of course, its the big bad boogie man in the closet.

I agree with some of what Cousin Eddie said and that was a factor in my suggestion for a show of force.

So you dont believe they were even hacked huh? They released their own e-mails, scripts, memo's etc all to embarrass themselves? Now that is an interesting theory!

They would be leaving $200 million on the table (anticiapted worldwide box office take). DVDs and being on Netflix make up very little total revenue for movies, its all about the box office.
