Mrs JG was at a bunco game at two spinster sisters house last night They are retired career women ,far from poor.
The host is expected to put out a spread of Hors Dorves, Wine, Cake, cookies etc.
My wifes friend asked he one sister where she got the Italian cookies. She replied" from the Borgata buffet".They take zip lock bags each week ,load up and bring them home and freeze them. The bottles of water all said Borgata on them.also.

My grandma used to take things back home as well. Her bedroom closet had a large stash of water bottles from her local.

Every time we go to buffet and are a bit drunk, I always try to get my wife to steal something. Something like tea bag or pack of sugar. She tells me we're not old enough to steal from the buffet yet.

Where I grew up it was the trashy or ghetto people that "stole" from the buffet. I mean like taking Tupperware or ziplocks and stashing food. Not just rolls or cookies....I'm talking ribs, shrimp, egg rolls, etc...

Hence the old adage... "is that an eggroll in your pants or are you just glad to see me"?

    ROFL!

Not that long ago I saw an older lady (older? she was really about my age) :( wrapping cookies in a paper napkin, looking around to be sure nobody was watching, and stuffing them in her bag., :)

In my family, we call the phenomenon "pulling an Aunt Greta". If I do it in the future, I will take extra care where I stash cylindrical objects- or at least make sure they're bigger than an eggroll.

    Fun post- thanks.

My first job was at a private club, pricey to get a membership and hi dues. But reasonable prices and good food.

There was a old guy that came in, funny after almost forty years I still remember his name. Jake came in every day for lunch, he carried a eight quart basket with a towel covering it. And snagged anything not nailed down. Even taking leftovers from other tables, sugar packs, ketchup, crackers, he would swap out salt and pepper shakers with empties he brought from home.

But he tipped good, was a life member and was a really nice guy. So no one cared.

When I was in college, Pizza Hut used to run a promotion on Tuesdays -$10 (I think) for all you can eat (pizza) & drink (fountain soda) but no takeout. They had to shut down the promotion within a month or so at the location in my neighborhood ;-) There were a bunch of crew guys who lived near us and they went every week.

I went once and though I couldn't eat a ton, I did drink 5 or 6 of those huge red cups of mountain dew, just to get my money's worth....

It's pretty obvious when things are going to be packed up for later. A whole pile of fruit or plateful of cookies for one person.

Only once have I seen management come and talk to a couple. The pilferers then blessed, etc, the Suits for allowing them to keep the goods.

I've seen similar situations. I just pretend I didn't see it, (so as not to embarrass them) and it makes me kinda sad, actually.

    I don't think it's sad, I think it's human nature.

A few years ago, one of my business associates had a son who LOVED chicken drumsticks, and whenever we would go to a buffet she would sneak one out for him. We were kind of amused by this. :)

Yeah, the example above wouldn't make me sad, hell I've snuck out a muffin my wife adored one time, much to her horror, lol!

Actually, I meant sad in those situations where you probably sense that particular person (in my case all seniors) is hurting financially and their fixed income drives them to sneak food into their purses, pockets, backpacks, etc. They probably lucked out in being at that buffet by friends or relatives and know that it will be a few winters before they get a chance to come back.

That's what I meant by being sad.

If they are hurting financially to the point that they need to sneak out food, they probably shouldn't be at the casino in the first place.

I was at a casino buffet once for breakfast when I saw a couple taking at least a half pound of smoked salmon and saw the man stuff it in a bag in his jacket pocket. Now smoked salmon can easily cost $12 for a half pound. The cost of the buffet was about $12. So, if everyone did this they would have to raise the prices to cover this. I don't have a problem with someone taking a few cookies, etc at a buffet, but to me this crossed the line. I informed the hostess of what they were doing and she went over to them. I can't remember if they turned over the "evidence",
