What? Had my regular physical and blood work last week. Doctor (not nurse) called this morning to say that two liver screening tests were "off the charts." She tells me I have to see a specialist...TODAY. They made the arrangements and ordered no alcohol.

I'm a social drinker, not a big drinker. But I enjoy my comp drinks at my slots. I enjoy a drink at my shows. I can certainly survive and yes, I am concerned about what's going on. But now? Why now, just before my trip?

Time to shower and go to see doctor. Can't tell my family and friends until I know what's going on. But needed to share.

    Good luck to you.

Sorry, but the phrase "I'll quit as soon as I get back" comes to mind.

Your health comes first of course. Yes, not being able to have a stiff drink in Vegas is going to be a disappointment but you'll probably enjoy Vegas anyhow. I hope everything works out fine and you won't be confronted with serious health issues.

Liver issues are nothing to fiddle with. Are you taking a Statin for your cholesterol? Sometimes Statins can mess with your liver functions and enzymes.

In the honest realistic aspect of it, you said your self you are a social drinker.. So what the h3ll is one more week at this point... I say dont worry about it, have fun, and consider a lifestyle change after coming home from a good trip and consulting your physician.

Hoping it's not as serious as the doctor apparently thinks.

As far as drinking for the trip anyway, ugh, I'd be tempted myself at least a bit on the trip, but I'm not very smart either.

    Best of luck.

I hope everything works out for you and you have a blast anyways. Do you take a lot of Tylenol?

Hope it is some kind of error and all is well. We all love our drinks in LV but ones health is sooooooo much more important. Please take care and give us an update when you can. Good luck!

Hoping for good news from your Doc.

As a side note, in a few weeks I'll be celebrating my 14th year of sobriety. I too was just a social drinker who would over do it from time to time. Do I miss it? Not a single bit.

    Congrats wpete!

Also, OP, i hope that the specialist confirms that the initial tests were in error or something. Good luck

Yikes, hope it turns out okay. Let us know how it goes!

A few months ago, I sadly had a high school classmate pass away from liver failure. I don't know all of the circumstances, but he was 36. It freaked me out a lot. I don't drink all that often at home anymore (1-2 days per week), but sure do in Vegas. Last month I had my doctor check my liver out of paranoia and she said it looked "essentially normal". I didn't like her wording, but I saw the results and I was fine with them. I still take milk thistle twice a day though. :)

I do know that low readings on liver tests is usually worse than high. Low is often related to cirrhosis of the liver. High, I am not sure.

Hope all goes well. As tempting as it may be, I wouldn't have any drinks if I were you. (No time for YOLO)

I could only manage to sip a drink in the evening last trip. I consoled myself by buying jewellery. Just a suggestion.

i feel your pain. i had extremely high liver enzyme levels since summer 2013, and i had to cut out alcohol. i quit, but then i slowly reintroduced it (glass of wine here and there and every once in a while, a rum and coke). my liver enzymes were better though and practically normal. sometimes just cutting back works. find out from the specialist if a few drinks on your vacation will make this an emergency situation. if this isn't life and death situation, then i would still have a few drinks while in vegas. really, it all depends on what the specialist says. good luck!

I appreciate your kindness and words of support. Specialist is concerned, ordered more tests (starting tomorrow morning.) I'll follow my primary care's instructions, but will have a great time.

    Congrats wpete!

Ultrasound (final test for now) this morning and doctor will have all results when I get home. Sold my Southwest drink coupons on eBay yesterday (within hours of listing them!) Made notes from another thread on virgin drinks to try. Will follow doctor's rules to the letter.

I spent the summer at our cabin in Maine. Doctor asked if I was drinking more than usual while I was there - and I was. But blood work in April was fine and suddenly this dramatic change?? I'm sick that I might have done this to myself, but hoping there's a less ominous explanation. I'll have answers in 10 days.

But for now, I'm going to Las Vegas and I'll have a great time. Thanks for listening and offering support.

If you're, uh, expecting, it's best to do without. I know countless women go without it for several months.
