How is Fremont St. during the day?

I know some of you just love downtown. Last year I finally made it downtown to see what all the hoopla was about. Honestly, I left there very sad. There were so many young girls in barely anything posing for pictures (my daughter is 17 so I'm a little sensitive) and so many homeless down there it just made me feel ill. Not because they were there, but because I felt sorry for them. It also seemed to be one huge party in the street with quite a few shady characters hanging around. I'm not a partier at all, so it didn't seem like my sort of place. Perhaps I'm becoming an old lady before my time? It was about 9 pm when we were there. We left after it got dark because it just didn't feel very safe. :confused2:

Anyway, I was hoping maybe during the day it's not so crazy down there? I'd like to take advantage of some low limit craps tables and play some slots this time. I love the fact that the older casinos are still there and would like to spend some time checking them out. Or, do you think I shouldn't bother? If it's the same during the day, I'll just stay on the strip.

It's comparatively dead in the daytime. There's a smattering of visitors and the buskers aren't out in force yet. You'll want to play $3 Craps at Fremont or the ElCo.

I visit often and see the same homeless people all the time so don't feel so sorry for them. They wouldn't be there if it wasn't profitable.

As for the young half naked girls, well, I fail to see the problem.:wink2:

Its fairly low key during the day. no shows or anything. just some homeless walking around and people basically milling about smartly waiting for the scantily clad ladies to come out and the music to start.

I make it a point to drink bright and early while milling about doing the above. I try to jump start the partying and encourage other men to party and get drunk early in the day too.

I am what you call a "bad influence" on husbands, boyfriends and scantily clad young ladies.

You guys are funny. :) I don't have a problem with drinkers or partiers. I just don't do it myself because I grew up with an alcoholic family member. It just doesn't appeal to me. Love to try fruity foo foo drinks but only one or two a visit.

Sounds like daytime is more for me!

Honestly, apart from the drinking, I would recommend going at night. Crowds suck, but they also attract the best entertainment. If you want street performers, live music, and an overall fun atmosphere, go at night! My wife doesn't drink either, and she had a fantastic time casino-hopping with me!

The canopy seems to keep it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter during the day. Same at night. I like the mornings on Fremont Street, very quiet and good time to get in a good power walk before I start my day. I agree with the above post that stated that the nights are much more lively with good free music and some amusing street performers. To me there seem to be less panhandlers than a year or two ago, and certainly less hawkers and slappers than most areas of the Strip. Good security on Fremont street, I've never felt unsafe in the least. Have Fun!!!

My observations seem to see more homeless and drifters during the daytime than at night, where the concerts, entertainment, and crowds start. There seems to be less homeless and panhandlers at night.

I would think early evenings would be better than during the daytime. More fun to be had.

During the day there are a lot less of the costumed people, the music isn't so loud, there isn't much of a crowd and what is there is moving at a slower pace, and there are a lot more bums and homeless around.

If the women posing for pictures make you sad, the homeless people make you ill and you don't feel safe under the canopy then you might be a little too delicate.

If you want to go down there for cheap gambling you could just stay in the casinos - the costumed characters (including the women posing) don't go in to the casinos and the bums rarely do (casino security will throw them out when they find them), and the casino security should make you feel safer.

Overall Fremont Street is going to be much more lively at night and more subdued during the day

We encountered many people asking for money during the day (last month). Less costumed freaks in the evenings than in the past. One day we arrived downtown by bus really early (7:30 AM) and were about to walk toward the El Cortez. We were approached by three men in less than two minutes asking for money. Police were on bikes trying to shoo them away. We turned around and went back to the Fremont. It seemed there were more bums out than patrons at that hour.

I like 'daytime Fremont'. Of course, I'm ok with 'night Fremont' too, as well as other times.
What I try to avoid is 'Friday/Saturday-night Fremont'.
I almost always plan my trips for "mid-week".
Far less craziness, even at night.
As for the scantily-clad women? Someone must be telling them that I'm there, because I rarely ever see them.
    Bums/pan-handlers?
Seems about the same as it's always been - except I've noticed on my last 2 or 3 trips that they're actually less aggressive than in the past.
I see far more of them sitting or standing quietly with their sign.
A few years back, far more of them would confront you and ask you to give them money or a cigarette...had one actually follow me into the LVC one morning after I refused to give him either.
After I bought-in at the blackjack table, he approached me again and said, "you could at least get me one of your free drinks".
I replied, "You want a drink? The bar's right over there!"
About 10 seconds later, security showed up and escorted him out.

Back to the point - one can quite easily avoid 90% of the street by using the casinos as a walkway. You can get from the D to 4-Queens, Nugget, Golden Gate & the Plaza, them to LVC to MSS to the Cal to Binions, to Fremont and back to 'theD', spending a total of only 5- to 10 minutes actually outdoors.

The above pic was taken in roughly the same spot. The morning picture was taken sometime around 9 AM. I don't remember what time the lower picture was taken. That will give you an idea of the contrast in crowds.

There were still homeless on the street at that time of the morning, just not as many of them. For what it's worth they were very passive during my last trip. Over the course of 5 days we did see the same people over and over again. The more "scantily clad" street performers didn't come out until the evening.

Come downtown and give it another try. The old casinos are something to look at it and it's amazing that the small section of Freemont st. started it all so many years ago.

...I am a total fan of FSE...for me the best is seeing the craziness of the evenings and the high volumn of people... then getting up early (who sleeps in Vegas?) and walking outside to see only a fraction of what I saw the night before. Great pic joshrocker...a perfect example.

I've been to Fremont street many times both alone and in groups. Never have I been asked for money, at least that I can remember. I must look like a cold hearted SOB. Don't make eye contact these guys are professionals and if they see weakness in you they will go in for the kill.

I'm not as big an ass as you might think. Last week in Tampa while getting gas a young man asked for money for food. I didn't give him any but I bought a sandwich and gave it to him on way out.

    this. love that pic!
I'm always amazed at how quiet it is in the morning. I'd love to grab a lawn chair and just sit on Fremont in the morning and have a coffee :)

to the OP - I love it downtown because I can casino hop with ease. I don't spend much time on the street, other than going from one casino to another, and I guess the crazy stuff just doesn't phase me.
last week I did witness some awesomeness - A security guard was standing outside golden gate and the "hotties" were perfoming on the stage outside golden gate. A rather large lady was having a great time and took interest in the guard and began dancing around him (think Miley Cyrus dancing). The guard was laughing and trying to get her to move along, but she persisted to dance 'with' him. finally another guard politely moved her on her way. no harm done - just all in a night on the
    FSE!

Excellent pics! Thanks so much. I think I'll head downtown during the day this time. I love the idea of being able to cruise from place to place quickly and the better odds of wining downtown. Can't wait!

Not sure why anyone would feel less safe downtown than they would on the strip. Lots more shady characters on the strip than downtown.

While I don't see a preponderance of shadiness at either locale, Fremont does have a certain element that is well documented. My comment deals with Las Vegas in general.... Why would anyone generally feel unsafe in Las Vegas? There is a heavy police presence, and in close to 100 visits, I've only see blood once. (hooker stabbing near the LVB entrance of Ballys, death resulting) Viva Las Vegas!

Fremont Street kind of reminds me of a carnival... you may feel some element of danger there, but this is not really any and it is one wild ride!
