I was amazed at how cheap hotels are for the 1.5 weeks leading up to Christmas. This seems like an excellent time to travel, so why are prices so low? Are there any drawbacks to being in Vegas for that Sunday - Wednesday before Christmas as opposed to any other time that month?

Our favourite time of year is around Dec 13-23; not too busy. Good prices on hotel rooms. Love to go every year!

Biggest issue on those dates is many of the shows are blacked out so the entertainers can enjoy the season .

No convention business and very few business travelers= tons of empty rooms. I love this time of year. If you are a show person, know that many shows are dark.

I've been going to Vegas the week leading up to Xmas the past several years; and like already mentioned, it's a great time to be there – not crowded, plenty of cheap rooms, and the town's overall atmosphere seems a lot calmer. If you don't care about shows and a few restaurants possibly being closed for major cleaning, I don't know of any drawbacks aside from nonstop Xmas music in some of the casinos.

We'll probably be back again this December, but haven't made any plans yet. It mainly depends how we make out over the next nine days.

As others have mentioned it's a great time to go. Room upgrades are easier to get. Table mins will be lower. It does get cold at night but one year it was 70's during the day and I went to the Aria pool and pretty much had the place to myself. Bellagio throws in a few Christmas songs for the fountain show which is cool.

We were there last year at this time, wasn't busy and although some shows were dark there was still enough to choose from that it wasn't an issue. Pool and hot tub was open at Monte Carlo, swam every day and basically had the place to ourselves. The only that was excessively busy was the botanical garden at Bellagio and M&M World on Christmas day (huge mistake going there that day!). Overall it was great time to go and the weather was decent.

It can be quite cold. I was there in mid December once and my suit jacket wasn't quite enough for the short walks between the casinos in the evening. I mean, I didn't lose any body parts, or anything, but it certainly was uncomfortably cold. And, while fairly rare, it can snow in Vegas.

Personally. the dates you are talking about are a blackout period for me. I don't do airports that close to Christmas and I usually have too much stuff to do at home. But in general the period in December right after the Rodeo and before NYE have (depends what days the holidays fall on) are some of the best rates. There are shows that will be dark. It's also a time for quick construction projects like carpet switchouts and restaurant refreshes. But I love Vegas when it's less hectic. The nights will definitely be cool or even cold if it's windy. The days can go either way. I can see the merits of going when it's nice and sunny but its fun to go when you can get good deals on everything.

Thanks for the responses. We're from the Midwest, so I'm sure any weather in Las Vegas will be a nice change. We're trying to make a side-trip to Vegas before heading to my parents for the holidays, so it would probably be Dec 20 - 23 in Vegas, then a flight to Dallas on the 23rd.

We are looking to see two Cirque shows - 'O' and The Beatles Love show, and it looks like they are only dark for the first two weeks of December.

My wife is also a bit of a hotel snob and has always wanted to stay at Bellagio/Caesars/Aria, so this might be a prime time to get those on the cheap.... errr.... frugal!

You might also check the Mandarin. They have their 3 nights for 2 promo during that time.

Strange that they would be dark during that period, as that's when the National Finals Rodeo is at Thomas & Mack (December 4-13 this year).

Then again, presumably most people in Vegas that time of year are there for the rodeo, and a 7:00 show would be at the same time as the rodeo each night.

We go each year for the 3 or 4 nights leading up to Christmas Eve. Rooms are very reasonable and there is still quite a bit of entertainment and food options available during this time of year. This year we are staying at Caesar's Palace. I got a great deal on golf and my wife has a nice spa package lined up. We are a relatively short drive away, so it's easy for us to go.

I went a few years ago from the 17th to the 23rd and I paid $500 total (Canadian dollars) and that included direct flights there and back, 6 nights at the Flamingo and a shuttle to and from the airport. Best deal I've ever had when going to Vegas by a long long shot. And this was long before the days I got any type of hotel comps. Booked that bad boy though expedia for my 2nd ever trip to Vegas when I was still in University,

    Hi. I'm new here.

I've also noticed that pre-Christmas is a great time to travel to Vegas. For me, despite the low prices, it's a busy time of year. I guess that's true for many, which is why it's so cheap.

If pre-Xmas doesn't work, I've also found that just after CES is also a great time. I'm gone Jan 9 to 12 (next week) and am pretty happy with the prices of flights / hotel.
